MSU Spartan Hockey 2013-14: Sipping the hemlock again

Re: MSU Spartan Hockey 2013-14: Sipping the hemlock again

I feel like you guys now, how do you do it? Oh snap, you haven't lost to Penn State this year...

OMG, I'm going to be sick...

Re: MSU Spartan Hockey 2013-14: Sipping the hemlock again

How do we do it? We just hope the offense can somehow tack 2 on the board for a tie, or 3 for a win because Hildy is pretty consistent. Unfortunately that hope does not get rewarded most of the time.

Hoping for 10 wins. Hard to find without much offense.

Re: MSU Spartan Hockey 2013-14: Sipping the hemlock again

Against my better judgement I do plan on going tonight. I can think of many years where we were significant underdogs in this matchup, but would adopt a "we much protect this house" mentality and find a way to win. After the game in January I hope we see some of that tonight.

Given the law of averages I don't think Michigan will get all of the breaks they got last night but I think they are a better team than the one we saw in the GLI consolation. Just showing up isn't going to get it done. Let's hope there are some students to help them at least get off to a good start.

Way to stick with it :).

They are a different team than they were at the GLI - Andrew Copp wasn't in the lineup then.

Re: MSU Spartan Hockey 2013-14: Sipping the hemlock again

Students didn't get tickets to this game, all returned to the general public, but we did get the option to buy back for the $10 student rate. As of Thursday there were hardly any bought up, but looking now there's a good amount that were purchased. Not going to be a full house unless there's a late rush, but as I've said in the weekend thread, this team has played UM better in dead environments.

EDIT: Actually after looking at individual seats it should be pretty full if people show up. The student section has about five rows that are sparse, but other than that all sections that still have open seats are either singles or a couple pairs.

Literally all we're playing for now is the 4 seed, we've been eliminated from the three seed with the loss last night. So root for PSU next week for us to get last change in St. Paul.

Just thinking that, out of nowhere, Yanakeff made good on what was probably his last chance vs. um. Didn't see that coming.

Final series of the year starts in about 19 hours. Not much news this week, so I guess we'll find out the goaltender situation tomorrow. I think I posted this in the game thread last week, but start Hildy Friday, Yanakeff on senior day and see who does better for the job in St. Paul. I fear Hildebrand may have some fatigue from playing all but two games this year.

But how many of them did he finish?

Looks like he's started all 30 games he's played. Yanakeff has played in 5 and started 3 so this past weekend was the only time Hildy's been pulled. He's only 15th in minutes played in the nation, but I feel like he's had a lot of mental wear too. In most games he's been the only one keeping us in the game. Wilcox out of MN and Motte from Ferris don't have to carry the team game in and game out.

Re: MSU Spartan Hockey 2013-14: Sipping the hemlock again

The last five periods (plus some OT) this team has played have been excellent.

Looking ahead to next week since today's game is semi-irrelevant, we match up with OSU very well, we just don't seem to bring any intensity when we play them. Maybe it being the playoffs will change things up. This afternoon I'm looking for more of the same as last night, with hopefully some tighter defense. A few bounces go Wisconsin's way and that very well could have been a 7-4 UW win.

Re: MSU Spartan Hockey 2013-14: Sipping the hemlock again

Quite proud of this hockey team tonight. Yanakeff fairly righted himself after 4 first period Wiscy goals - the third of which was a bit fluky but you knew Wisconsin was coming to skate hard right out of the gate. You had to figure that losing their top-line forward Zengerle for the game in the first period would throw things into a bit of chaos for them and might figure eventually. Still, that was a really good team the Spartans outplayed for two periods tonight, and it came down to some solid goaltending to seal it for the Badgers.
Excited for next season, and what this year's underclassmen can bring. Proud of how the seniors - esp. Jake, Lee and Greg have stepped up this year and led. And there's still some hockey to play. Go get 'em Spartans in St. Paul!
