MSU Spartan Hockey 2013-14: Sipping the hemlock again

Re: MSU Spartan Hockey 2013-14: Sipping the hemlock again

Nice to see that the program is again making some inroads on NTDP-Ann Arbor, with G Edwin Minney (ranked as #2 NAmerica goalie for 2014 draft) and now adding F Dylan Pavelek for 2014. Really needed to stock another forward for the next couple (at least) seasons.

Minney currently has 2.38 GAA and .923 Save % through 10 games played.
Pavelek has 6 goals, 3 assists and a +7 through 16 games. He's also scored on 23% of his shots on net.

Was Pavelek an earlier tOSU commit?

You guys ALWAYS have good goal-tending. What is it about sparty? Goalie coach maybe? You tell me...

There was that one year - I think it was 1976 ...
No really the next two seasons could really get interesting. Nice problem to have tho.

Re: MSU Spartan Hockey 2013-14: Sipping the hemlock again

Certainly one of the more impressive ways I've seen a team give away two points.

Personally I think we earned it. Although I'll give the Spartans credit, their defense had their sticks in the way of our getting goals all night long.

I'm not going to take anything away from you guys because you took advantage of opportunities, but we committed two penalties in the last two minutes, couldn't win a face-off in the last minute, and couldn't score on an empty net for three minutes. In my eyes we blew it, badly.

You're right, don't think it would have happened if we didn't get the PP opportunities.
Funny thing is when the season started back in October we couldn't make a PP goal if our lives depended on it.
Good luck tomorrow!

Just ****ing shoot me now.

Yeah, that really **3 sucked. It felt like a defining 3 minutes for the season. While we could nit pick the called penalties that produced the 6 on 4s I just didn't like the passive play over the last 10 mins or so. I was at the other end of the rink but how close did Wolf's chip shot toward the empty net come? Overall they just looked too lethargic after they got the 2-0 lead. Walsh's miscues on the blue line were pretty representative of the caliber of play, outside of Hildy.

I even thought the "A-team" seemed a little flat tonight.

Curious though, I thought defensively, those guys were playing pretty responsibly, esp. getting back on odd-mans, blocking and taking away the extra passing options. But going the other way, you can't make clearing plays passively when the other team's got the momentum. Their sticks' gonna have a little extra reach. There was just a touch too much hesitation there in the last few minutes. And there were some lapses that gave OSU a lot of open net at various points during the game too.

A bright spot is I am more and more impressed with Farrantino and all the things he does during the game, both big and small. Strong kid, carries himself well and has a deadly backhand shot to boot. I think he imparts some grit and confidence that wills his teammates to skate harder. It's the same thing I see when Wolfe is out there. We need four lines like that.

Re: MSU Spartan Hockey 2013-14: Sipping the hemlock again

The passivity nearly cost us in OT last night too. It seemed like they just gave up in the last twenty seconds (really the whole power play too after OSU cleared it) and a lazy pass nearly turned into a goal with just a few seconds left.

Not expecting a big crowd today with the 4pm start. Seems like people still don't know that Fridays are at 6:30.

Re: MSU Spartan Hockey 2013-14: Sipping the hemlock again

Embarrassed, ****ed-off, frustrated, and there are too many people to blame. The last 10 minutes of playing time were a complete shame. Ohio State essentially came into our building and dictated how they wanted things to go. The way I see it the program has made negligible progress in a year and the clear deficiencies in skill aren't being overcome by extra effort. Munn Arena has become a favorite hangout for programs that are passing us by. This whole **** with generally being in awe of one guy - the goalie - is wearing thin and I'm sure I'm not the only one. The non-power-play power-play OSU enjoyed for 5 solid minutes to close out this joke of a hockey game, because state couldn't find the puck and couldn't lay a body on anyone just makes me want to vomit.

Re: MSU Spartan Hockey 2013-14: Sipping the hemlock again

Is it strategy to have one guy attacking the puck on defense while the other four stay back? At least three times Wolfe was battling for the puck all by himself against four Buckeyes and holding his own, while everyone else just stayed back at center ice watching. He really seemed to be the only aggressive one the entire night.

Gotta hand it to Hildebrand though, he's trying his hardest every night. I would probably be frustrated and near the breaking point. 5 of the last 6 games he's giving up 2 goals or less, and then one game he didn't the defense hung him out to dry many-a-time. What does he have to show for the last six games? An 0-3-3 record.

Re: MSU Spartan Hockey 2013-14: Sipping the hemlock again

Just a "Spartan Head" 's up.. LSSU is auctioning off the 4' x 4' team signs of each of the former CCHA teams that hung in the Laker's Hockey arena. I think it's a cool chance to own a piece of CCHA history while enhancing the mancave and making your fellow alums jealous.. Details in the link attached:

Just an FYI in case anyone was interested but hadn't heard about it.

No you've got to send an extra man in there - I know exactly what you're talking about. You win battles when you've got two sticks vs. 1, IMHO! Let the 4 remaining guys (including your netminder) take care of the rest. A shot on net means a chance to make a clean save, get some fresh legs on ... and chance to win a face-off.

Re: MSU Spartan Hockey 2013-14: Sipping the hemlock again

Let's go try our luck in Madison, I guess.

Several of our 98's were in the Tier 1 AAA Elite vs. NAHL challenge recently. Although the result was one-sided for NAHL, these guys were tagged with some impressive superlatives, and by someone who surely has no incentive to embellish the talents of MSU recruits ;).

I'm not too confident in this weekend given the events of last week with the offense. The good news is we played well on Olympic ice in Minnesota. I'm thinking a loss and a tie this weekend.

I'm thinking we don't play well vs. the NFL on NHL ice.

Re: MSU Spartan Hockey 2013-14: Sipping the hemlock again

Would be nice to not kill momentum by giving up goals with less than five seconds left. Happened against UM and now against UW.
