Mr. Trump, I mean Mr. President, which State would You Like To Round Them Up In?

Re: Mr. Trump, I mean Mr. President, which State would You Like To Round Them Up In?

We'll see. My guess is that corporate tax reform will be one of the first priorities; that will be a big part of bringing jobs back to the USA.

Why? The only thing that brings back jobs is people needing more stuff. If demand of products don't stay high or goes down, there's no need for more workers.

Taxes just effect the profits of companies.

You're right but no one on the right is listening. So, just forget it. It's over.

In two years, when unemployment is up, as are corporate profits, it will be interesting how that is spun.

Republicans have a favorable map and Dems never come out in off years.

I wouldn't rule out a 2006 style election. Likely, no. Possible, definitely.

A silver lining on this very dark cloud is that I imagine the Democrats will have a good year in 2020, and its a census year.

I warned everyone that this (Trump) could happen. I'm telling you now, the Dems will not win in 2020.

The Republican platform has literally no connection to anything that will materially benefit most of these working class white voters.

It has a lot of stuff that will materially harm minorities and repel educated white voters.

I think 2008 was probably a mixture of a rejection of Bush and an embrace of Obama. The 2020 Democratic candidate may not get the latter portion of the equation, but I feel comfortable asserting these rural white voters are going to be nearly as turned on in 2020 when they realize the 1950s didn't magically come back.

Won't happen. None one in rural America is voting for a Dem. No one. It's all about social issues. Always has been. Obama was an anomaly.

unemployment is as silly a statistic as inflation.

THe other thread closed so I am posting this here as it is relevant to your comment.
It must have been the tax filings both candidates released.

The only solace I can offer the Democratic supporters is that you're going to see the GOP lose control of Congress in two years because the GOP will overstep their bounds and the public will want to reign them back from the craziness.
By then the damage will be done.

I’ve always dreamed of settling down and starting a family. But for the first time in my life, I’m glad I don’t have a family and I’m especially glad I don’t have a daughter. The questions would be unbearably difficult to answer.

How do I wake up tomorrow and explain to her what happened last night when she asks? That America doesn’t value you because you’re not a man. That you still can’t be president because you’re not a man.

Beyond that, how would I tell my children that America doesn’t value diversity? What would I tell my child if they were a member of the LGBT community? That America doesn’t value you unless you’re a heterosexual, white, Christian, male? We rend our garments and gnash our teeth over Sharia Law but let Christian fundamentalists run amok in our government.

Racism has won. Xenophobia has won. Sexism and misogyny have won. Fundamentalism has won. Lies have won. A man who ran a scam university won. A man that doesn’t pay his contracts won. A man who doesn’t understand NAFTA or the implications won. A man who judges you based upon your looks won. A man who only cares what you have to say if you have a *****.

This isn’t a rebuke of Washington. The incumbents would have had widespread losses if it was. They haven’t. I might have accepted this result if it were the case. But no, this is an embrace of racism and sexism. An embrace of the qualities we've worked for decades to eliminate.

Welcome to an America where you can’t dream anymore. Welcome to an America where a bunch of white men in ridiculous red hats tell you what to believe. Welcome to an America where we test you based on your religion. Welcome to an American where we objectify you if you’re a woman. Welcome to an America where you are probably guilty because you’re walking while black.

I’m glad I don’t have a family. How could I explain to my child that for the first time in my life, I don’t believe in what America represents anymore?
I too did not sleep well last night. I went to bed physically ill to realize the things that make my country dear to me, the things inscribed on the base of the Statue of Liberty, are the very things people elected a president to negate. I have a child in college. I teach HS kids at church. I have no idea how I am going say anything that makes sense.

My child was texting me all evening- full of hope. The country was intelligent enough to see what the consequences would be if they elected a man who was clearly unfit. At 2AM I got a text he hates his country. He has morals, values. We just elected a man who is amoral. He understands world politics (to a degree). We just elected a man who all but a select few world leaders have stated they do not trust and will destabilize the world stage. He is deeply concerned with the environment. He is an Environmental Sciences major. We elected a man doesn't have rudimentary science knowledge, denies scientific evidence and espouses the things that will destroy our environment.

I have no words to comfort him. I have no words to comfort myself. I have no words to explain the un-explainable. I am thankful he is not a girl, gay, of a different color or religion. In some way I am reassured that he is able to see the sickness that is invading the public psyche but that is little solace.

What do I tell my Sunday School kids? How do I explain away the Evangelicals who were morally bankrupt and supported a man who is a racist, misogynist, and the very embodiment of what Jesus teaches us to avoid being?

I sit here, in a sense of deep dread.

First they came for the Communists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Communist
Then they came for the Socialists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Socialist
Then they came for the trade unionists

Then they came for the Jews
And I did not speak out

Taxes just effect the profits of companies.

Aggregate demand consists of two components, consumer demand and corporate investment.

Companies reinvest after-tax profits in order to innovate and grow. By introducing new products or offering existing products at a lower price, consumers are tempted to buy. A virtuous circle then follows.

or at least that is the theory....

Corporations have been reluctant to reinvest profits in the US. Look at the trillions of dollars they have earned overseas and have not repatriated because of the 35% tax rate they would face. Imagine now a one-time offer, repatriate those untaxed overseas earnings in the next year and pay only 10% tax on them instead.

My guess would be a jump-start to the economy as a result. We will see, eh?

So you are saying that profits and jobs have more to do with demand of stuff.

I'm not sure how you come to the conclusion that companies are not investing into new products. We see new ones constantly- cars, phones, TVs, gaming stuff, etc. Some of the changeover happen super fast, too. But if the demand of smart phones levels off, there will be no need to hire anyone. If cars go on a decline, all the new hires can go away.

Even if companies charge a huge amount, and make huge profits, the work that needs to be done is 100% with consumption.

Re: Mr. Trump, I mean Mr. President, which State would You Like To Round Them Up In?

They don't care about having a middle class to buy their products. They just don't. Stop trying.

Good idea. Time to move on, and let the people who won deal with it.

A guy from work just stopped by being smug about the election, and when I brought up the idea of de-regulation and how it will impact our jobs- it was clear he didn't think about it. Duh.

Good luck, all. Going to get back away from the news, and just deal with life. Clearly, worrying about yourself and blaming others for it is the way to go.

But if people have jobs, they buy stuff. And if the stuff is made here by American companies, the money stays here to be re recirculated again and again.

People may have jobs but they don't have discretionary income. That was the beauty of the American middle class. That class is gone.
