Re: Movies! The Last Jedi: Ragnarok

The Post was pretty good. Can't go wrong with Streep and Hanks.

Saw it today. Very well acted. Hanks and Streep play off each other so well.

Only problem is I will always see Zach Woods as Gabe from The Office so I got a little thrown off when he had his scene.

I had fun watching and thinking how in some scenes it was a Mr. Show With Bob and Dave reunion :D

Very well done movie though!

Happy Birthday to Sergei Eisenstein, born this date in 1898.

If you haven't watched Battleship Potemkin, you are missing a classic. Ditto Alexander Nevsky (score by Prokofiev).

Re: Movies! The Last Jedi: Ragnarok

Mrs. Solo and I saw The Post last night. Good movie but a major flaw that rankles and this isn't the first time Tom Hanks has ignored or misrepresented historical facts (see Parkland for one example): to equate JFK's Vietnam/Southeast Asia policy to those of Truman, Eisenhower and Johnson is so disingenuous it's laughable but it's dangerous as well and it makes me wonder... with the reporting of and on declassified documents and the words of Dave Powers and Kenneth O'Donnell and even McNamara himself why are some so afraid to acknowledge 35's real position in Vietnam? It's beyond debate now, he was withdrawing...

Beyond that problem I thought the movie was very good.

I'd like to see Ellsberg get a movie based on his heroic actions but I think that's a bridge too far for most of Hollywood.

Re: Movies! The Last Jedi: Ragnarok

JFC I just got your screen name.

Jesus me too

BTW The Pentagon Papers was a movie about Ellsburg and he is played by James Spader. Been years since I saw it so couldnt tell you how accurate it was.

Re: Movies! The Last Jedi: Ragnarok

Another movie while on a 10-hour flight: Mazerunner. Maybe the perfect exemplar of the class "movies you would only watch on a 10-hour flight."* It was OK, albeit predictable, speaking of which it should have been called The Hunger Games Only with Fewer Cocks I Mean Christ, Thomas, Suck It Up.

* Other movies in this class:

Divergent
The Purge
Gattaca#
In Time##
Tomorrowland

# Actually, a good movie.
## Actually, a great concept which, while poorly executed, is still a worthwhile movie.

Also caught Europa Report on Netflix. I'm not sure about it. It's derivative of a dozen other films but (1) I really like those films, and (2) for the most part it didn't take the easy way out.

There is something about it that I really liked, but I have no idea what that thing is. Yet.

Edit: I found it in a review. It's sincere. I hate the winky, ironic cleverness that drenches all contemporary movies like cheap cologne. There is none of that in this movie. It has characters I would not stab in the face and writers I would not swat and pray for a mishap.

You are the one of 352 people who will see that movie. ;)

It'll flop at the box office, but if done right it could end up pretty squarely in the "so bad it's good" category.

Only worry is Cena might be too squeaky clean for the role. I don't see the Make-a-Wish guy ****ting down an alien warlord's neck while reading a newspaper.

Re: Movies! The Last Jedi: Ragnarok

You should do a double feature, "Duke Nukem" with John Cena followed by "Rampage" with The Rock.

I'm convinced at this point Dwayne Johnson just barges onto random movie sets, walks up to the director, and says "Hand me a script, I got this."
