Re: Movies! The Last Jedi: Ragnarok

Anyone that gives 7 more than a B- either never saw 4-6 first, didn't understand them, and/or are a Justin Bieber groupie in waiting ready to succumb to his every desire.

Seeing 8 in about 9 hours and can't wait.

I have tickets to go see VIII tomorrow at noon:30 with the fiancée. I'm expecting to like it, but curious about the Rotten Tomatoes score - 93% fresh, but only 62% of the audience would recommend it when I last checked early this morning. Odd. Something tells me the snobs are afoot.

Pretty easy to explain. It's different. Everyone whined when VII was "A New Hope" and now everyone's whining that VII isn't "Empire". No one is ever happy.

As I just posted on the other thread, don't pay attention to the audience scores on sites like RT. It is way too easy to manipulate the data and skew results. Just look at the number of 1 votes The Godfather gets on IMDB. Maybe some people don't like it because of violence or stereotypes or something else, but in no way is it among the worst films ever made. Everyone is going to come away with different thoughts. Think about Empire...whole sequences are of a teenager wearing a talking green puppet like a backpack. Audiences could have laughed at that idea, but it worked for almost every person who saw the film.

Re: Movies! The Last Jedi: Ragnarok

The critic score on RT is all that ever matters. The audience score is a joke and most likely wholesale hacked.

Re: Movies! The Last Jedi: Ragnarok

You sure seem to know a lot about this underground movement...

Werent you here when the prequels came out? It was heavily discussed :D

Plus I used to work in a comic book shop...the things I heard grown men say would drive you batbleep crazy

Or just ignore RT all together. Critics are no better about this stuff than the average joe...and many of them skew their reviews just to get seen on RT.

Just judge the movie yourself.

This. I use critics as a guide, maybe. Get a general feel. I really listen to the people I know and know my tastes, or give honest reviews (and I know their tastes).

Re: Movies! The Last Jedi: Ragnarok

I might check out reviews after I see a film...but I have seen way too many instances where reviewers go over the top hyperbolic (even seen where they make it obvious they never saw the film...and these are major newspaper guys) just to get the clicks/views. I trust myself and a couple of friends...that is about it.

RT is like the fantasy football of the film industry. People spend too much energy and effort worried about the numbers and it gets in the way of their enjoyment of movies.

I give a glance at the Trib's reviews, basically first and last paragraph to get the summary of a movie I don't know about, maybe scan the body of the article if needed. Then listen to friends, get the RT rating, see how it did at the box office for the 2nd/3rd weeks of release....go from there. Obviously, I don't watch many movies IN the theater, I'm seeing Jedi to avoid getting it spoiled by others/internet, AND I really really want to see it.

If it were some random really good movie (the latest being Baby Driver), I can wait until DVD. But I'll have it marked/put on my Netflix list.

Re: Movies! The Last Jedi: Ragnarok

I've been in self-imposed internet exile for the past week to avoid Star Wars spoilers and most of the attention is on The Last Jedi and a possible $220 million opening. However, last Friday night I attended a special advanced screening of Jumanji which will be released this Wednesday for the holiday season.

When it was announced many of us were nervous about them recasting the Robin Williams part or disparaging the original. Granted, the original is not a classic. The CGI doesn't hold up at all and the script has plenty of holes, but the film is fun and many film lovers romanticized the movie after Williams passed. Not a worry with this reboot/sequel.

I enjoyed the movie. It was very creative in bringing a board game into the modern, videogame world, the cast is wonderful and the story is entertaining. The jokes land. It feels like a real adventure. The CGI work is very good.

Don't think too hard about the plot. If that's the kind of thing that'll take you out of the movie, try something else. If you are looking for a break from the craziness of the holiday or need to distract the kids for a couple of hours this is your movie. I give it a 7/10.

Re: Movies! The Last Jedi: Ragnarok

If you overthink the plot of a kids movie you are doing it wrong. It isnt like the original Jumanji was some piece of amazing literature.

It's as if I never wrote the second graph...

It's as if you aren't the only person discussing things in this thread.

You were commenting on my article, saying things I had already said as if I hadn't already said them or even as if I had said the opposite. Gee, wonder why that might bother me.
