Re: Movies: New Ideas Welcome II Prequel Reboot

You know just because you have an opinion and think highly of it doesnt mean you are right ;)

Re: Movies: New Ideas Welcome II Prequel Reboot

Kep ripped off The Departed. It should be an easy 4, maybe even a 5.

I didn't look at the list but is the most overrated film of all time (Usual Suspects) on it?

Re: Movies: New Ideas Welcome II Prequel Reboot

That's an odd way of spelling "Blade Runner".

LOL so true. Though that isnt my most overrated film...I wont name it because every film nerd and fanboy will flame me to the point that the board will crash :D (and no it isnt Reservoir Dogs though that makes my Top 10 most overrated)

Please. Blade Runner is a 9. Usual Suspects is a workaday 7. Reservoir Dogs is a 6 and the least interesting of all Q's films except the opening which is terrific.

All ratings are within genre (i.e., you can't judge a RomCom and a Horror by the same standards -- apples and oranges).

Most overrated film of all time is The Searchers. It's strictly up there as a message film. As a movie it's not in the top 100 Westerns -- probably not even in the top 250. Except, of course, the cinematography, which is amazing.

Another sub-5 often mistaken for a 10: the Kurosawa Seven Samurai, which is watching paint dry. The Magnifect Seven is a far, far better movie than the original. The film that does deserve the praise is Yojimbo, a genuine 10.

I guarantee Handy's "most overrated" film is Citizen Kane. It's exactly the sort of performative anti-elitist nonsense he's peddled elsewhere. I mean that with respect, of course. :p

This list
1. "Greatest" lists should not include anything released in the last 20 years. Half the movies since 1997 on that list will drop off it by that rule.

.

dude. lost in translation was definitely made after 1997!!! :)

Re: Movies: New Ideas Welcome II Prequel Reboot

nice to see borat there...... since on the unintentional comedy list, that movie is the reason any visitor to Kazakhstan who stays more than 2 nights has to register with the local police :)

Actually it is #2. While it is boring as hell and made me want to jab nails in my eyes at least I can say it was innovative and changed movie making. ;)

Re: Movies: New Ideas Welcome II Prequel Reboot

it is boring as hell

This says nothing about Citizen Kane and everything about you.

Here are my other guesses about genuinely brilliant movies that go over your head:

Vertigo. Too painterly for the bores.

Lawrence of Arabia. Too slow for the toddlers.

All About Eve. As I recall you don't even realize who gave the best performance in it.

And here are some which if you picked them you'd be right:

The Grapes of Wrath. Nails on a chalkboard for about 16 hours. The book is even worse.

The Birth of a Nation. Incredibly overrated. Boring and parody-worthy hamfisted.

Intolerance. I want to revise my #1 most overrated movie of all time -- this is it. Awful in every possible way.

Vertigo. Greatest film ever made. And it's replaced Citizen Kane as it should on most lists now.

All About Eve. No, that's not Handy. It's me. Pretty overrated film overall IMO.

You are as wrong as your favorite President. I love Vertigo. Grapes of Wrath was a worse movie than book and the book was horrid :D

And I find it funny that you dare criticize someone for finding something boring that others love when you ranted like a twelve year old on Ritalin on the very same page. I will repeat what I said before, just because you have an opinion, and you believe it doesnt make you right :D Also, just because you love a movie and others dont doesnt mean they dont "get it". You arent brighter than someone just because you like a movie and found some hidden meaning in it...

Re: Movies: New Ideas Welcome II Prequel Reboot

Its not an older movie, it is a critical darling nowadays that every film snob (and wannabe snob who worships at the alter of Rottentomatoes) and Film School hopeful thinks is amazing.

Wannabe film snobs ignore Rotten Tomatoes. The #4 movie of all time right now on Rotten Tomatoes is Get Out (6, but, come on...).

Wannabe film snobs worship at the altar of Film School Rejects.

I'm trying to think of recently lauded haute film examples that anger people who don't understand anything more complex than a claw hammer. Wes Anderson or the Coen Brothers, maybe?

O Brother, Where Art Thou (6) is incredibly overrated but I suspect you fell for it. You probably hated Inception (7) because it's oblique and you have that asinine Rousseauian "anything that can't be explained in 3 sentences is a stain on the clear soul of the common people" conceit. Oh god I'll bet The Artist (8) made you break out in a hate rash, too.

If it's Fight Club (9) you and I are going to have a problem.

Oh... or maybe The Matrix? (6) Look, here's the thing: every bit of it is derivative of a hundred better done SF stories, but it actually is the delivery mechanism that made the Great Unwashed aware of all those stories. No question, it is no better than a cromulent movie, but the underlying idea, even if it was stolen from a hundred uncredited stories, was a really good premise for a movie.

I'll give you that the best scene in the franchise isn't even in that movie -- it's the Architect in Reloaded (3).

Here I was thinking how much I liked Super Troopers.

Re: Movies: New Ideas Welcome II Prequel Reboot

All I care about is whether Sherlock Jr and His Girl Friday made he list.

Hilarious old movies. And I hate most old movies.
