I may check it out. I do love me some non-fiction books, and I suppose Shakespeare would fall under "pop culture" for that time period. The general mood, so to speak, of society.

Very much so. Like Moliere in his day, or like Marriage of Figaro back in the days when the opening of a play or an opera could cause a riot that burned down half of town.

I really applaud any popularizer who drags Bill down from the academic altars and back to the groundlings, with the dirty jokes and the type of raw satire that leaves everybody in the audience with a few deep cuts. It's the greatest popular entertainment ever created, because it works beautifully on every level at once, and there's absolutely not a whiff of snobbery and not one moment of distancing. It's red blood cells and bone marrow.

IMO there are two undeniable geniuses in history: Bill and Leonardo. Euler and Goethe round out my Rushmore, but I'll accept arguments concerning them.

Part of the reason I loved "Rozencrantz And Guildenstern Are Dead." The absurdity of it all, with intelligence.

In more rural areas, where county judges are less specialized and hear all types of cases, I think they come as close as anybody to witnessing first hand and on a regular basis the glut and suck of human life that Shakespeare understood so well. The greed, lust, foolishness, brilliance, envy, bravery, cowardice, treachery, triviality and nobility that is all part of our nature. Not on a nation-state level, of course, but it's all there in our personal lives, and local judges see it all in a very personal and passionate setting.

Not really. The Dionysia was for the tie, tails, and toga set. You could go if you were a citizen, but to be a citizen you needed to be a free-born male property owner. It was actually pretty elite entertainment. (Which is not to say polite. The Greeks made Tyler Perry audiences look dignified. If they didn't like the show they might threaten to kill the actors. As in, for real.)

I'm sure there were all sorts of plays put on for the gen pop, similar to the Passion Plays in the Middle Ages in Europe. But they haven't come down to us. We were actually d-mn lucky to save anything of the Big Three (Aeschylus, Euripides, Sophocles). Some of the surviving tragedies trace a lineage through one surviving copy. Imagine losing the Orestia. For that matter, imagine all we did lose. Aeschylus wrote from 70-90 plays. We have 7. And a lot of the other ones won at the festivals. The year it was given, Euripides' Medea finished third! In another year, Sophocles' Oedipus Rex finished second. Not only do we not have the plays that won those years -- we don't have a single surviving play from either author (Euphorion and Philocles).

Anyways...back to movies!

Now that I am apparently on a Steve Martin kick the question is what to watch next. I am thinking Bowfinger but may go Roxanne cause I love it so much!

While he plays a supporting role in Grand Canyon rather than a starring role, he does a very good job in a non-comedic role in that film.

I tried watching that a long time ago but never got into it. Maybe I will try it again. I am seeing Steve and Martin Short do their show when they go on tour this summer! :D

edit: The Shakespeare nerds sound 1 step above Scientologists. :D

I have been a huge Steve Martin fanboy ever since I first saw him on SNL and was later given AWACG on vinyl for Christmas. "He hates these cans" or "All I need is this remote control" obscurely finds it's way into my conversation on occasion along with, "Those aren't pillows!". For soft spots I've always loved LA Story and Parenthood.

Imperial Dreams

A young black father gets out of prison, goes back to his home in the projects to raise his son correctly and tries to become a writer. The 'hood culture and a broken system stand in his way.

This plays out almost like a cousin to Boyz N The Hood, which of course is an OUTSTANDING movie, and it's difficult to not compare. Very well done, though, and I do recommend it.
