The Coldest Game:
During 1962's Cuban missile crisis, a troubled math genius finds himself drafted to play in a U.S.-Soviet chess match -- and a deadly game of espionage.

**** good spy movie. The intrigue is rather intense at times, and the most impressive thing is that it shows how different minds work. Different point of view, to put it simply, in all manners.

Since there are a lot of active political threads here- many of you will enjoy the movie "Slay the Dragon"- which is mostly about the "Voters not Politicians" movement here in Michigan. Will make many very angry, and may inspire some to get active to change how district boundaries are drawn.

Shooting The Mafia:
Italian photographer Letizia Battaglia spends her career documenting the life and crimes of the Mafia.

It's a bit dry, but interesting, if you like this sort of subject matter. We're not talking NY mafia, either, this is La Cosa Nostra, old school Sicilian mafia. The pictures and video here truly explain the way of life over there, when it comes to how things work, especially from the point of view of a female photojournalist. She went through a lot, professionally. The personal side of her life is equally interesting. Let's just say she got around, but was always the shot-caller.

On disc, Netflix, in Italian w/subtitles.

Operation Odessa:
From the director and producers of The Seven Five comes Operation Odessa, a true crime thriller about a Russian mobster, a Miami playboy and a Cuban spy who teamed up to sell a nuclear submarine to a Colombian drug cartel. A gangster epic that hopscotches from Brooklyn to Miami and Cali to Moscow, the documentary tells the story of three friends who set out to hustle the Russian mob, the Cali cartel, and the DEA for the score of a lifetime. The tale became an international media sensation. But the truth about what really happened has remained an underworld myth - until now.

Stop watching the redneck wedding involving animals, and watch this instead.
Paraphrasing: "I call my friend Misha, and ask if it's possible to buy a Russian military submarine? He calls back two days later, and asks if I want missiles also, or not?" *blankstare*

Yeah.

Finally saw The King, the 2019 version of the Henriad. Excellent work. Lots of wonderful little touches if you know the Shakespeare really well.

Spoiler: My god, what a burn on Cheney.

Parasite:

The following review of mine piggybacks another review from a Gopher Puck Live poster, and I have included that poster's post, as I am directly responding to it:

I watched Parasite last night. It was meh for me. I didn't understand what all the fuss was about. I went on IMDB to read some reviews. Apparently a lot of people like it because it's a social commentary on class in society. Maybe it is, but I didn't think that was the main point of the movie. It didn't do a whole lot for me.

Just watched this. That was EXACTLY the point of the movie, with a secondary point of no matter what class you're in, you're still a parasite. The rich people still needed to clamp on to something/someone else to function.

I thought it was very well done, the continuing theme of "the smell" (I don't want to say too much) being the point of the arrow that is being drawn in this movie. The final shot of the movie really drives home the purpose/message, also. Kudos to every actor/actress in this movie. Not one really stood out. They all were shining performances.

Re: Movies 52 - 1917: Sonic the Bad Boys of Prey

I thought the movie was fantastic even without any social commentary. It was well written and well acted. Me thinks the people who are running it down are exposing their political sensitivities, not making aesthetic judgments.

It deserved the Oscar.

Definitely deserving of the Oscar. I'll probably watch it again to catch some of the finer points of the movie. I did like all the foreshadowing in the story. Very well done.

Agreed. The commentary can add on to its strengths, but even ignoring that it's just a fun story to follow and you honestly don't know where it's going next, which is rare nowadays.

It's an Asian movie. You can almost guarantee you have no idea where it'll go next. ;)
