Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

At the rate I'm seeing/hearing promotion for "The Gift," it has one of two options:

1. Be really good.
2. Be f-cking awful.

I'm betting on option #2.

Based on the trailer it looks like a pungent number 2.

Hopefully Deadpool will use movies like those mentioned to poke fun at the genre... We already see that with his comments about the green, animated suit :p

From the trailer it looks like they are keeping the character's tendency to break the fourth wall. It'll be interesting to see how that works. Harder to pull off on the big screen.

Fantastic Four is at 8% after 39 reviews...to put that in perspective Catowman with Halle Berry and Sharon Stone which is the gold standard for terrible CBM movies got 9% Looks like Fox and Josh Trank made a modern classic ;)

I kind of want to go see it just to witness the MST3K aspects of it in an actual theater.

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

The original Terminator was on last night. Each time I watch it I am more impressed. It's a solid movie -- and it manages to not fade with time. Even the effects are still really enjoyable.

It may be my nostalgia for the summer when I was 21, but I have nothing but good feelings whenever I watch it. That's Hollywood entertainment as its best.

You have to pick the right theater. A college audience might work, but typically audiences are passive with one exception, and comic book movies don't play the Apollo.

I watched it the other day on Netflix...I still love that film. The practical effects they used are still pretty cool and the story is great :)

"Change is coming"

Wow. I also hate the fact they reboot movies so quickly. The Amazing Spider Man included.

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

Well it can't be worse than the new Fantastic For which is being shredded and looks Catwoman bad :/

Knew that would happen. From what was reported they rushed a movie out cause they had to put one out to keep the movie rights. Otherwise the rights go back to Marvel. Sounds like they did themselves proud.

Trank seems to be burning bridges by the minute. The movie was looking bad anyways (hence the reshoots) then he and his douchy attitude got him fired from a Star Wars film, then he said fans hate him cause of his age in an interview and finally tonight he posted on twitter "A year ago I had a fantastic version of this. And it would have received great reviews. You will probably never see it. That is reality though." He posted that on opening night of his big tentpole movie in response to the critical backlash to the film. He deleted in hopes of saving his career but it was too late people saw it and saved it and sent it around to the trades. He sabotaged what little career he had left

Normally i side with the director and say the studio screwed up but rumors have persisted for months that the movie was a disaster long before the reshoots.

Watching this unfold in real time is kind of awesome...

There is a big difference between Richard Donner and this guy. :)

Life Itself

That awkward, stiff early footage of Siskel and Ebert when they really didn't like each other is pretty good.

Incredible movie. Of course, I'm biased, being a movie geek (but not a movie snob, mind you). He simply loved movies, and it showed. Blatant honesty, and joy, and criticism...loved it.

Put it on hold at the library. Only two holds in front of me; should have it in a few weeks or so.

Also, I've watched several movies recently that some of you might like:

Diabolique, Henri-Georges Clouzot (1955)
--Murder mystery in the Hitchcockian tradition.

Rififi or Du rififi chez les homes, Jules Dassin (1955)
--Crime, jewel burglary, noirish thriller. Great, 30 minute heist scene, shot in near silence.

A Man Escaped, Robert Bresson (1956)
--War time France, resistance prisoner plans escape, based on true story.

The Thick-Walled Room or Kabe atsuki heya, Masaki Kobayashi (1956)
--Low-level Japanese war-crime prisoners deal with their pasts as they hope for the future.

I Will Buy You, Masaki Kobayashi (1956)

Very good Japanese baseball "business" movie. Follows the scouting and buying of a young player with the relationships between reps from the teams and the player's agent in all its sordidness. Mix in family relations, the love interest, and health issues and you get a very good drama.
