Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

Even Portman was terrible in it.

One of my favorite parts of the Rifftrax for The Phantom Menace is the mocking of Portman's emotionless, wooden acting.

"I will plead our case to the Senate."
("Flatly, lifelessly, killing scene after dull, stupefying scene.")

"I pray you will bring sanity and compassion back to the Senate."
("And I pray that I never again have to emote as much as I just did, I'm exhausted.")

I'll wait and see how the reboots are reviewed before I decide whether I'll see them or not.

Maybe the Solo one will be good. Will depend on the actor chosen and the tone. Never know...

They arent reboots, they are just standard sequels and prequels. Disney wont reboot for 20 years or so...

Pantani: The Accidental Death Of A Cyclist

Doc on Marco Pantani, the last man to win the Giro d'Italia and Tour de France in the same year, and his downfall. Really good doc, showing how dominant he was on mountain climbs, and how the doping scandals affected him. Even if you're not into cycling, just being a sports fan should be enough to interest you in this movie.

Schooled: The Price of College Sports

Doc on the evolution of college sports. Obviously biased against the NCAA, although colleges and the NCAA declined all requests for interviews, thereby not really doing any favors for themselves. Some ex-NCAA employees talked, but that was about it. The details in this doc is rather eye-opening, even for the people who consider themselves fairly educated in the corruption that is the NCAA.

So I watched the Star Wars VII Comic Con footage (behind the scenes stuff) and I will say it is encouraging. Way less CGI, real sets and models, location shooting, old school film not digital and even costumes and puppets. At least the movie is going to look like Star Wars which is a major step in the right direction.

I saw that last night. When the production team got together, they announced that the movie would be on film and that they had intended to minimize CGI in order to give it a more organic feel. There's no way to make the film everybody expects without using a lot of CGI, but at least it won't be like episodes I-III saturation.

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

I think (hope) the producers realize this thing will probably gross something in the range of $1.5-$2 billion with a chance to crack $3. So you might as well give it an astronomical budget and get it right. You **** this up and you won't get return visits for 8, 9, etc.

This movie is a multiplier for future dollars.

This is truth.

Look at how much the very first Star Wars made...you have a VERY established franchise, and open direction on where to go with it. You have ONE job: do it right. Spend the money.

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

I'm kind of hoping for a truly blockbuster budget. Like $280-$350+

Lots of sets. Tons of models. Great cast. On location shooting. I'm more of a trek fan but they have to get this right.

If I had to choose, I'm more of a Star Wars guy. If you get Trek-specific (which show/spinoff) then I am more a Trek TNG guy.

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

Yeah, the movies were great, then terrible, then great, then horrific, and now back to being great again for trek.

Star Wars has had a solid downhill race with a blip for 3.

In terms of series, TNG> Voyager > DS9 > TOS and I never watched enterprise.

It ain't about arse-kicking. It's about story-telling.

But Worf could kick Riker's arse. Hell, Worf's ex or whatever she was could.

Either way, Riker could have served as captain, he was that bad-arse. That's my point. And he was but a shadow to Picard. :)

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

I've been watching Star Wars: Voyageur the past couple weeks. Decent show, but for a crew whose sole mission is to get home, they sure do spend a lot of time simply exploring the Delta Quadrant and thus getting into trouble. There wouldn't be much of a show without these adventures, but it's almost comical how much they get themselves into bad situations.

I finished watching Star Trek: Enterprise shorty before beginning Voyageur. Enterprise was fun, watching the crew struggle with new tech like transporters and such that are old hat to characters in the other shows. What I didn't like about the show was the use of time travel, it became a crutch.

I never got into DS9, it just felt wrong for a show called "Star Trek" to not actually trek anywhere. TNG was something I grew up watching, but it's been a long while since I've last seen an episode. The original series holds no interest for me. The few episodes I ever saw, Shatner's Kirk on the TV series just annoyed me, but his portrayal in the movies were just fine. I can't explain why the same actor playing the same role drew such opposing reactions from me.

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

Star Wars voyager?!?

**** man. Just...... ****.

Wow you totally failed...

FWIW DS9 did "trek".

Did you guys actually watch the show or basing your reactions upon its reputation? It lasted 7 seasons, just like DS9 and TNG. I'm not blown away by what I've seen, but it mustn't have been so bad to last that long. I'll find out as I go along, though. Should the show get continuously bad, it's easy enough to dump from my watch list.
