Mel Brooks: Make a Noise

Solid PBS doc, I did not know he had three brothers and lost his father at age 2. Otherwise, not a lot of stuff about his career and life I hadn't already heard.

Tora! Tora! Tora!

Excellent movie about Pearl Harbor. Love that the movie approached it from both the Japanese and US points of view. Watched it today for obvious reasons, had been letting it sit in my queue until now (had never seen it before).

Spinning Plates

Examines three very different restaurants in different parts of the country, the families of the owners, and their triumphs, trials, and tribulations. Had literally no idea about Grant Achatz's cancer battle.

The Exorcist:

What a load of sh*. The build-up was nothing but horrid filler, the acting was sub-par at best (minus the kid's acting; she was great). Overall, though, I can't believe I wasted 2 hours of my life on it.

If you want bad, wait until you see the sequel. :)

My sister's college boyfriend lived one floor above Linda Blair a few years after she made the movie. Apparently her drug binges / orgies were legendary with the local PD. Needless to say she was never cited and they were always invited.

Like hell I'm going to see the sequel. :p

I admit I'm not MUCH for horror movies, but I do love me a well-made one (Halloween, for instance, is a classic, and Blair Witch is its modern counterpart, IMO). This? This was just terrible.

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

Blair Witch was hot garbage. Saw it when it came out in '99, and I laughed through the entire thing. Later on, Alton Brown did a Thanksgiving "snowed-in in Atlanta" episode of Good Eats where he parodied part of it. Friggin' classic.

Having talked with a few friends, I have found that if you have camped in the middle of nowhere as a kid, the chances are better that you liked Blair Witch. The random noises and such made you think back to your experiences.

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

Honestly, I thought the 30 for 30 was a better movie. Just didn't like the interviewer in Red Army. I do think both are worth seeing, though.

IMO, they are companion pieces. The 30 For 30 was the origin until the Olympics, and Red Army was Olympics and then the afterwards (NHL, specifically). My only peeve was the centering on Fetisov, but I don't know the circumstances (was he the only one really willing to talk? Was his position in Russian athlethics a factor? etc). I would have loved to hear more from Mikhailov in Red Army, and more from Tretiak/Mishkin in both, but it seems that Fetisov was the centerpiece.

I live about 10 miles from where Blair Witch was filmed. I enjoyed it overall; it's too easy to parody now because there have been hundreds of lesser "found footage" flicks. But it brought back low budget psychological horror, and that was necessary after all the bloated slasher movies of the prior decade.

The "found footage" did help. And I agree, it was prime for parody.

I can't say enough about your review of The Exorcist so I'll stop at to each their own. :)

That's fine. I know you well enough (and vice versa, I hope) that you are not calling me out to be "that one critic." I speak honestly about movies I see, and I know you speak out in the same way. :)

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

Carrie is the best movie from the "possessed young girl" era of camp horror. I figure that Piper Laurie's psycho-biddy mom is probably what it's like to go to one of those Jesus camps when the documentary cameras are turned off.

I think the most easily (and deservedly) mocked "found footage" flick is Paranormal Activity, which I even liked in parts.

Exactly. The amazing thing about that role was it was so over-the-top when it came out, and now based on theo-politics you gotta figure about 25% of the country is fcked up in the head that way.

Yeah I don't think you're doing it wrong, just one of those times where it doesn't click. I know I'm in the minority on Usual Susoects, The Departed, American Beauty...
