Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

Sort of, it's supposed to take place a few decades after the original, with the original Ghostbusters having retired, or something. I don't know much about most of those women cast, but Melissa McCarthy is just not entertaining. She's the same character in each movie, and it's just not an fun character to me. She has Vin Diesel range.

The one note she can hit, she hits very well, but beyond that it gets old. Plus she suffered from the "star in 10 movies with 2 years and everyone gets sick of you" syndrome a couple years back (which Kevin Hart is right in the middle of this year).

Get Low

Duvall plays a backwoods hermit, who decides to plan his own funeral party. He is known about by the townspeople, but they don't really care for him because of stories handed down over the years. Excellent movie. Highly recommend.

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

We watched Captain Philips tonight. (Netflix DVD) Great movie. Of course, the real story is somewhat different, but still great performance by Hanks.

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

With regard to american sniper, I'm already familiar with the horrors of war, and there are a lot of good movies that depict it. Letters from Iwo Jima being one of the better ones, and really I don't put this movie up there. I think if we are raising awareness of something, maybe we ought to raise awareness about alzheimers. So my vote would go to " Still Alice" for that.

And also other good movies I've seen lately, " Red Army" about hockey, imagine that, ( it's in limited release right now but will be more widely released soon) and " The imitation Game" very interesting and a high quality movie.

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

I just saw the cast of the new ghost busters movie. Pass.

Sacrilege!! Are we really going to believe that those women are going to be strapping on Unlicensed Nuclear Accelerators onto their backs and go around New York City with them??

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

A Night In Old Mexico

Duvall plays a rancher who lost his ranch, heads to Mexico with his grandkid for a fun time. Accidentally crosses paths with a drug dealer, and things go downhill. Decent movie, the acting was a little hammy/cheesy at times (the writing didn't help), but overall it was a fun little movie.

However...gave me the idea of the Robert Duvall Drinking Game. Every time he says "yeah" as a complete filler word, in whatever movie he's in, you drink. This might get you drunker than the Strange Brew "Eh" Drinking Game. Not. Kidding. Between "Get Low" and this movie....hoo boy.

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

For no particular reason, I pulled out The Big Lebowski last night. First rewatch.

"The Dude. Takin' 'er easy for all us sinners" :)

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

I've got Rush on my tablet and will watch it on my flight to Madrid tonight....if we get out of Philly! :)

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

The only thing I have done that is similar to that is watch the Akira Kirosawa collection (25 movies) that Amazon has for sale. The set cost just as much as if I bought the movies I wanted separately.

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

A co-worker and I recently decided to watch the entire Criterion Collection (approx. 800 movies).

Wow, that's truly impressive. I made a list of the horror movies I've seen and it was well over 1000, and most of those were awful, so my time could have been better spent doing what you are. :)

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

I'm not a movie classics kind of guy by any means, but there's some stuff on there that I definitely love. Repo Man will blow your mind. Quadrophenia. Head, the Monkees movie? I'm amazed that's on this list. Paris, Texas? I have Dazed and Confused. You young kids wanna know what the 70's was like? Here ya go.

Short Cuts? Monterey Pop. Gimme Shelter. Do The Right Thing. The Big Chill.

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

Vampyr, Carl Theodor Dreyer (1932)

Eerie effects, imagery and symbolism. Focused on the visual rather than dialogue. Limited "talkie". Seems like this maybe was originally meant to be a silent picture, not sure.

I've watched Dreyer's Master of the House and The Passion of Joan of Arc as well. Joan and Vampyr are the most impressionable.

After watching The Most Dangerous Game, Island of Lost Souls and The Testament of Dr. Mabuse it was interesting to see several movies that have inspired the "horror" genre.

The silent film The Phantom Carriage is also very good.

Seal Team Six - could have cut the first hour off and the last five minutes and it would have been better. God that's some terrible acting.

Act of Valor. Now that's a very good military movie. STS is not worth the time.

Re: Dazed And Confused.

Also watch "The Stoned Age." It's the "other" crowd featured in that movie. Not the jocks/popular crowd. It's the headbangers, so to speak. Totally a B version of Dazed. I love the movie.

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

Stoned Age is lots of fun :)

The Judge...further proof that you should spend less money on big name actors (great cast) and more on a script. Paint by numbers movie making at its finest. So much potential wasted on a second rate Hope Floats.

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

In a similar vein to Dazed and Confused, anybody remember PCU?

I watched it again the other day before work, spent the whole day quoting lines...

Hell yes. I have the PCU/Airheads combo DVD that I got for $5 from Target. :D

And I'm sad to read that about "The Judge." :( Is it really THAT bad? Is it worth a watch just for the cast? Or is it puke-worthy?

Ah yes, PCU. That movie is so underappreciated. And then to turn around about 10 years later to see Droz has sold out to the Man and become the Man, it was a little hard for me to deal with that.

Now that is DVD combo worth owning! :D

PCU is one of those movies where people either go "huh, don't remember it" or "The Birdshow! The Amazing Birdshow!"
