Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

I was only half listening to the radio this morning, but I caught something about one of the winners complaining about not earning enough on her film to even pay her nanny. I don't know, but it's just a thought, maybe she could sell the contents of her $150,000 gift bag she received for attending the event to pay her nanny's wages.

Maybe she was getting paid way less than the dudes on the film for the same work?

Show me a Hollywood movie where two actors who earn more than scale are earning the exact same pay. It doesn't happen. Actor A commands $X1 for a film because his/her films gross $Y at the box office. Meanwhile Actor B commands $X2 because his/her films gross $Z at the box office and/or that person could traditionally take on support roles rather than lead roles. Payscale in Hollywood isn't and apples-to-apples comparison once you get out of the technical fields like supplying the finger foods or being a grip (whatever that actually is, I don't know).

There's nothing as attractive as economic fairness complaints from people with servants.

Truth.

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

Right but if lets say, the female lead of the film is making less than the male lead (assuming similar impact on the story of course) she would then have a point.

Birdman is awesome, but it is super weird and completely not a Hollywood movie. Keaton was outstanding as was Norton.

Still not really a point, because the leads aren't paid according to the importance of their character, they're paid according to their box office impact. If Tom Cruise has one line and a fart, he's getting paid the most of anybody in the movie.

That's kind of the rub with these arguments about equal pay. At the general level, office, factory etc., gender should have no say in how much a person gets paid. But at these high wage levels for acting, modeling, sports etc., its based upon the financial impact you have. Pay inequaity in entertainment is not female exclusive either. Male models are making nowhere near what their female counterparts are, neither are male pornstars. Now, is there an argument to be made that actresses have a bigger impact than producers and studios believe? Probably. But this "actresses should be paid more because of gender equality!" argument is stupid.

Even in actors/actresses in major films it isn't universal. What happens if Jennifer Aniston stars in a film alongside an up-and-coming, but still relatively unknown male co-star? I guarantee you that Jennifer Aniston makes bank compared to her co-star. Its all about star appeal and how big of a "name" you are. Both males and females command big paydays in Hollywood.

Like say, Nicole Kidman in Moulin Rouge. I daresay she was paid more than Ewan McGregor.

Not sure whether it's true, but I've heard the story several times that Mae West was the first actor/actress to earn $1M in one year, and that during the Depression.

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

Question for old movie fans (er, fans of old movies... you know what I mean). I can't remember what movie this is from and even with some I think rather admirable googling skills I am still nowhere.

It's probably a noir. Man (likely the detective) is talking to the newly widowed femme fatale. At one point he taunts her, saying (cryptically, but I assume in reference to her wearing black), "right color... wrong cut."

I was just reminded of the line (one of the great one liners) from an episode of the 40s radio series Richard Diamond, where Dick Powell says this. It's just after another ripped off line, this time from The Big Sleep, when a ridiculously precocious Martha Vickers tells Bogart, "you're not very tall, are you?" to which he replies, "Well, I try to be."

If any of you had spent two minutes to look up what she actually said you would know that this post is nothing but bovine-produced methane.

The text of what she actually said:
To every woman who gave birth to a taxpayer and citizen of this nation, we have fought for everybody else's equal rights. It's our time to have wage equality once and for all and equal rights for women in the United States of America.

My God! How horrifying! Burn her at the stake!

Blue Ruin

A homeless man with a mysterious past goes back to his hometown after he hears of some disturbing news relating to him. Very slow and drawn out, but I liked it. Very much a study of the main character's psyche as the movie goes on.

Nightcrawler...great performances but not a great movie. JG is amazing!

Rewatched Dog Day Afternoon last night. I see new things every viewing. Such an excellent movie, for so many reasons. And though I'm no fan of Al, that right there is in the top 100 of all-time character studies. A+
