The Quiet Man

What a splendid movie! The back and forth banter is classic.

Best first kiss in movie history, for my money.

Really wonderful movie on so many levels. And it showed Wayne could genuinely act -- his vehicles just rarely called for it.

I agree. Wayne was not playing John Wayne. And Maureen O'Hara.....yeahbaby.

Gone Girl

As good as advertised, if not a bit f*ed up. Excellent movie. Cannot recommend more. It IS a bit longer, at 2.5 hours, but didn't bother me in the least.

It helps that half way through you think they have hinted at all the possible endings only to go even more nuts

I hope they (at least tried to) follow the book - I liked the book. My wife really hated the resolution at the end of the book, though.

They left a few details out (like Nick's visit to Desi's mother), but generally followed the book. I don't remember anything major being added to "Hollywood" things up. Same ending, too. It was interesting to see the reactions of people in the theater who hadn't read the book (generally.. w-tee-eff???)

The messed-up stuff in the movie is generally stuff you don't see in an award-winning Hollywood blockbuster, either. I think that is what really caught me off guard.

The Two Sides Of January

Tour guide/part-time scammer doesn't like the situation he gets into when he gets involved with a rich couple. I gave it a watch because it had Viggo and alluded it to being about a scam. It started off okay, and just kept getting worse. Devolved into a standard cops-robbers ending. Not worth a watch.

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

Went to a four movie marathon thing today.

Boyhood: It's alright, but boring.

The Theory of Everything: Pretty good, Redmayne nails it.

The Imitation Game: Loved it, but probably because I'm a history buff.

American Sniper: I don't see how Eastwood glorified anything. I liked it, Cooper does a great job.

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

Fury

Holy *ing sh* that was an intense movie. Pitt shines, as always, and Shia even did a great job. Definitely should watch this movie.

Never seen Birdman, nor heard of it before this weekend for that matter. Guess I'll have to try to fit it in at some point.

I really enjoyed Birdman. The whole "single take" idea was fun to watch and a lot of good performances. Pleasantly surprised it won Best Picture since Boyhood seemed the favorite. I suppose that makes up for Keaton not winning for Actor; nothing against Redmayne, I'm just not a huge fan of biopics anymore (unless they star Daniel Day-Lewis ;)). Then again, my choice for Actor wasn't even nominated, because I would have given it to Jake Gyllenhaal in Nightcrawler.

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

Everything is apparently not awesome to the Academy as "Everything is Awesome" does not win. Boo.

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

The only Best Picture nominee that I've seen was Budapest Hotel, and that was the worst movie I've seen in years. All the rest are on the Netflix Queue, but most aren't available yet. Really looking forward to Birdman, Whiplash, Theory of Everything and the computer/code one with Cumberbatch that I'm blanking on the name right now. It sounds like, from what I've seen and read, that Birdman was deserving.

I liked Budapest Hotel.

That being said Gone Girl was screwed over by the Academy on a large scale. Not even nominated for adapated Screenplay? Please. And Rosamund Pike should have won best actress. I find it telling that in both cases the winners were playing people with severe handicaps/illnesses. Much harder to do what Rosamund did IMO. Gone Girl may be the best Hitchcockian Thriller since the old man passed away. I can't think of a better one.

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

I was only half listening to the radio this morning, but I caught something about one of the winners complaining about not earning enough on her film to even pay her nanny. I don't know, but it's just a thought, maybe she could sell the contents of her $150,000 gift bag she received for attending the event to pay her nanny's wages.

Gone Girl was my favorite movie of the last year, but like I said, I haven't seen a big chunk of the good ones, since I haven't gotten them on Netflix yet.

Was in regards to gender equality in pay.
