Movie Thread: Grab Some Popcorn, Enjoy The Show

Re: Movie Thread: Grab Some Popcorn, Enjoy The Show

I might have to check this one out. The trailers make it seem a bit cheesy on the jokes, but then again, those are trailers. I've heard it earned its "hard R" rating, so that's a plus.

A lot of the jokes are referential towards other comics, movies, pop culture references, etc. Absolutely, many of the jokes are sophomoric, but the character is a bit insane when you look at the source material - depending upon which version of the comic they're using - he's either talking to the audience or he's talking to himself by way of referencing the audience. If breaking the fourth wall annoys you, you're not going to like the movie.

I like the breaking of the fourth wall (see: House Of Cards, Ferris Bueller's Day Off). What I don't like is over the top cheesiness trying to not be over the top cheesiness. Sit-com humor, if you will.

As you may know, not a comic-book guy by any means. The buzz around this movie does have me intrigued, though.

Her time on V was less impressive than in the other roles I've seen her play.

well, there was the time on that show where she Mated with that one Soldier guy to breed an army, and then ate him. That was another show that should have been given another season.

The opening 15 minutes or so are the best part of the movie. After that the love interest is introduced, and that leads to a scene that WILL make the families with young children leave the theater in a huff. Honestly couldn't really keep the momentum up after that.

Although it has the best Stan Lee cameo ever.

Re: Movie Thread: Grab Some Popcorn, Enjoy The Show

Caught the last half of The Hangover III on TV. I'm glad I didn't see the first half, and still mad at my friends for choosing to see Hangover II in the theater. Even years later that's 10 bucks I want back.

I've never actually rewatched the original, so I have no idea if it stands up, but that is still one of the most fun movies I've seen.

I didn't mind HO 2 or 3. You knew what you were getting into.

II would have been a good move on its own, but I don't know if I've ever seen a movie so flawlessly copy its predecessor. They literally just took the first movie and moved it to Bangkok. I was more mad at spending money on something I had seen before.

Agreed. And HO 1 was good, and still is good.

As for Deadpool, no child should be entering that theater, from all accounts/reviews. Those parents are morons. Or "morans," to keep the bit going.

Edit: my fave HO line is so simple, but given the character and the situation, and the scene...beauty:

Deadpool was such a fun movie. Saw it last night with the wife. She was laughing as much if not more than I was during it.

One of the feeds I get on Facebook added a JPEG of a Facebook conversation that went like this:

Original Poster: [My husband] and I left with [our son] after 15 minutes. They should have told people that this movie isn't for families with children.
First Responding Friend: Oh that's horrible!
Second Responding Friend: It's rated R.

DVR'd Casablanca off TCM and watched it again last night for the umpteenth time. Just calling it a great movie does it an injustice. And Ingrid Bergman.........let's just say I dreamt well.

I missed that movie but I saw the end of Sabrina and then I watched the end of Now, Voyager. I'd add those to the ROM COM lists we were working on before. I had forgotten about them. Fact is there are so many old movies that are not ROM COM's cause they predate the term but are so good and so much better than the crap today it's startling.

Love Casablanca though. Can't go wrong there.

Re: Movie Thread: Grab Some Popcorn, Enjoy The Show

TCM rocks in February; they roll out all their Oscar winners. I typically record 4 or 5 movies a month; this month I have been recording 4 or 5 a week.

Re: Movie Thread: Grab Some Popcorn, Enjoy The Show

Feb. on TCM is the best. I've got Sabrina on the DVR also. Waiting for my youngest to come home and watch it with me. She just loves Hepburn and I try not to drool too much.

Then let me restate: no minor should really be watching this movie. :p

And haven't seen Casablanca. Yes, you know the line: It's on my list.

Watched "Experimenter" tonight, a biopic on Stanley Milgram, a psychologist that did experiments on human behavior/obeying authority. Very, very dry, I'm assuming it was based on a play, as that how the movie was presented (w/backgrounds and such). Either way, I liked it. Really drove home the trends of human behavior, which I'm always curious about.

Know the source material better than just that its a comic book movie. Deadpool isn't meant to be PG! He's a dirty, naughty boy who enjoys it too much when he gets spanked!
