Re: Movie Thread: Grab Some Popcorn, Enjoy The Show

Paging Sir Tokein, white courtesy wand please.

No writer has ever gone to greater lengths than Tolkien to prove that the main characters of his best novels are bit players in a tiny forgotten corner of the universe, whose deeds would soon be forgotten in the grand scheme.
If anything, one gets tired of hearing them whine about it.

I always just assumed that was foreshadowing Leia being Luke's sister, nothing more.

In the original movies, prior to the release of those abominations from 1999-2005, you'd be correct, and it was hinted at towards the end of Empire before being outright stated in Jedi. However, with the release of those craptastic prequel films, Revenge of the Sith's ending completely changes the meaning of that conversation. Obi-Wan knows about Leia, there at her birth and when she was handed to Bail Organa. George Lucas retroactively changed the entire meaning of that conversation.

I don't consider the prequels canon. They were the unfortunate result of a megalomaniac who didn't understand the story arc having control over the development of the films. That megalomaniac just happened to be Lucas.

Dostoevsky ruined Crime and Punishment with an epilogue. It happens. Best to just bury it and agree it didn't happen.

CBGB:

Self-admittedly "mostly true" story about one of the greatest clubs in music history. I'm sad I never visited the place. Told in a hybrid comic-book/traditional movie way (think "Kick-***"), starts at the roots of the club, and onto its peak during the punk/new wave craze. Kudos to get the actors to really look like the original artists (friggin' NAILED Iggy Pop and the Ramones). A little heavy focus on Hilly (the founder of the club), but that was expected. Man, he messed up in choosing the Dead Boys for the band to manage....

If you like pop culture, or punk, I'd recommend it. Dunno how much you would get out of it otherwise

Re: Movie Thread: Grab Some Popcorn, Enjoy The Show

It was nice, in a nostalgic look back at the scene, but a little too well-mannered and neat to be a really compelling watch. The bands did get the look down, but having them fake playing live to studio versions of the songs was off-putting, to say the least. would have been better to get some copy-cat sounding bands to record live versions, and use those instead.

Best scene in the movie was Hilly meeting the Ramones for the first time: "Lotta things you don't wanna do" "Yeah"

Otherwise, I thought Freddy Rodriguez as the bum working in the kitchen stole the movie, and was pleasantly surprised by Ashley Greene's performance. That accented nasal voice could cut glass.

And from what I understand, no matter how filthy and disgusting they made the bathroom appear on film, it paled before the actual horror show that was the real thing. People would refuse to go into the thing.

Technically TV, but I feel that the 30 For 30 is more movie-like than a TV episode/whatever:

Chasing Tyson (30 for 30 series)

Tremendous breakdown on the Holyfield/Tyson era. I still got tingles when seeing the highlights of all the fights during that time, which IMO was the last great heavyweight era. So many good fighters. I'll expand the timeline a little, but Tyson, Holyfield, Lewis, Tua, Bowe...man oh

Nothing against that era but I'll take Ali, Spinks, Frazier, Holmes, Norton and Foreman.

I never had the pleasure but from what I understand that bathroom was used for every possible purpose over its history. If you can describe it on a napkin, it happened in there.

The stories I could tell about 1st Avenue and 7th Street....

That's why I said "the last great heavyweight era." Certainly not the best, but it was a good one. ;)

As for First Ave...while absolutely filthy, it still pales compared to the stuff I heard about CBGB's. I did love First Ave back in the day, though. Usually went 2-3 times a month. And like CBGB's....just pray you don't have to use the lavatory while there.

Followed up CBGB with Blondie: Parallel Lines

Smithsonian Channel (first warning) did this thing about the making of the album. It was well done, BUT, wish there was more raw footage of them before they hit it big. Given the airers of this, you knew they would cleanse it and not air anything deemed "offensive." They DID excel in showing/explaining the layering of the album, only playing the drum tracks, the vocalizing, etc. and then putting it all together.

It was not what I expected, but it turned out alright.

Ridiculous 6:

The new Adam Sandler movie. Seemed to want to be a cross between Blazing Saddles (parody/satire) and Django Unchained (modernized whacked out western). Well...it was a cross of those, just not a good one. However, as much as I wanted to hate it, there were enough entertaining moments to qualify it as an "afternoon time-killer," a la "Dude Where's My Car" etc. It's not saying much, but I went into it expecting a zero-star movie (out of 5). Gave it a 2, grudgingly.

Chaos On The Bridge:

Hour-long doc on how Star Trek: The Next Generation was started, the mess that went on behind-the-scenes for the first couple of seasons, etc. Shatner is behind this, so I had my doubts, and I have to admit, he did his best to let the people involved tell the story, and he tried to stay out of the limelight. I KNOW!!!! Decent watch if you were a fan of the show.

An Independence Day sequel? Looks like Jeff Goldblum, Judd Hirsh, and Bill Pullman are in it. However, no Will Smith or Randy Quaid.

To be fair, not surprised at Randy Quaid. He has some issues....

"What your father did was very brave."

Given the way Randy Quaid's character went out of Independence Day, I didn't think he'd make a return in the sequel.

They could always create the "whatever" device (c) Thank You For Not Smoking, or do a flashback scene or something.

It's supposed to be a preemptive send up of Tarantino's Hateful 8 that comes out Xmas Day.

That part was obvious, hence my Brooks/Tarantino comparison. It just...well, it's Sandler behind it. That's the problem. And he DOES have 1-2 non-dumb-comedy movies that I do like. He's in it for the paycheck at this point. It's terrible.
