Nah I wanted that to happen to...that character sucked! Plus it meant whiny boy lived too which doubly sucked! ;)

Re: Movie Thread: Grab Some Popcorn, Enjoy The Show

Creed was excellent although it seems like the last movie didn't have any lasting impact since neither the mother or son make an appearance, and Rocky's fame is once again very limited. Exceptional work with the camera for all the fights. Certainly would like to see another movie or two with this premise.

Southpaw

I was expecting a heavy movie, and....ooof got more than I bargained for. Got a bit dusty at times, and despite all the gloss-over/cliche Hollywood treatment, it was very well done. Showed some gritty sides of the career of a pro athlete, just little details that are often left out in movies like this. Highly recommend.

Side note, related: My grandpa was a Golden Gloves boxer in the Army, record was 60-2 IIRC (give or take a couple on the wins, the losses I'm sure of). The 2 losses? To lefties. He didn't know how to fight 'em. We shadow-boxed often and I used that knowledge to switch my stance. He still whupped me, but I got my shots in. :)

Anyone seen this new Cobain doc Soaked in Bleach? Should I bother?

As a rule, I avoid reading or watching anything related to his death unless it's well-vetted. There's way too much conspiratorial/cash grab crap out there.

Is that the one that is related to the box set that came out? If so, I heard it was worth it.

Re: Movie Thread: Grab Some Popcorn, Enjoy The Show

Technically TV, but I feel that the 30 For 30 is more movie-like than a TV episode/whatever:

Chasing Tyson (30 for 30 series)

Tremendous breakdown on the Holyfield/Tyson era. I still got tingles when seeing the highlights of all the fights during that time, which IMO was the last great heavyweight era. So many good fighters. I'll expand the timeline a little, but Tyson, Holyfield, Lewis, Tua, Bowe...man oh man.

This obviously focuses just on Holyfield/Tyson, and does a great job mixing in views at the time, and views now from the media and both fighters. Honestly, that first fight between the two greats was a beautiful fight, maybe one of the best fights ever had. The amount of respect that both fighters had for each other was not really noticed back then, in hindsight, and is very apparent now.

Definitely recommend.

I never liked Holyfield...he was one of the many were the poster boys for what killed Heavyweight boxing. Lots of standing around throwing two punches and never doing anything. His fights would maybe have 2 good rounds and the rest was just one punch, defense. Two punch, defense. Lewis was the same way. Add in fat shlubs like Riddick Bowe and it just got worse. None of those guys screamed Heavyweight Champ to me.

Lewis was a student of the science of boxing. His fight against Tua was considered "boring" by many people, and I thought it was brilliant. Lewis kept Tua to the outside the whole time. Was there a lot of action? No. If there was, Tua would have won, IMO. Lewis jabbed his way to a win, he was a very smart fighter.

I always liked Holyfield (and won a crapload of money on that first Tyson fight). He also was a student of the sport. He knew he didn't always have to punch a guy out. He came into the ring with a strategy to minimize his opponent's strengths, and capitalize on their weakness. For Tyson? Get him past the 2nd round....Tyson has no idea what to do, he's not used to a (ahem) "long" fight.

Re: Movie Thread: Grab Some Popcorn, Enjoy The Show

So, sitting here watching The Empir Strikes Back (original cut), getting ready for December 18, and it irks me how Lucas created contradictions in his prequels from what was in the Original Trilogy.

Yoda: Told you I did. Reckless is he. Now, matters are worse.
Obi-Wan: That boy is our last hope.
Yoda: No. There is another.

Obi-Wan and Yoda both knew about Luke and Leia in Revenge of the Sith, thoroughly involved in the plan of hiding Leia and turning Luke into bait, so either Yoda or Ben have developed a case of Alzheimer's or there's yet another Jedi or potential Force user out that Yoda knows about or has seen in a vision. Lucas got so sloppy in the details, it's just irritating.

Re: Movie Thread: Grab Some Popcorn, Enjoy The Show

That happened a lot...like Obiwon not recognizing R2 and 3PO in ANH. Or how in Empire he says Yoda instructed him and then n he prequels we learn Qui-Gon did.

Well, the Qui-Gon vs. Yoda thing gets explained away a little in that Yoda taught all the rug rats until they were far enough along to hand off to a master handling missions. As to the droids, that can be a simple situation of Obi-Wan never having owned either of them and then just playing it cool upon just meeting Luke. That doesn't bug me as it could be a simple character idiosyncrasy thing in order to get Luke to join him (really trying to be kind on that point), but some things such as a candid conversation between two peers on a subject they were both intimately involved with, those things are just too contradictory to not get called out.

Oh I have seen some funny convoluted ways fanboys have excused certain things. Some people will do anything to not admit how ridiculous parts of the movies were. If you really want to get the freaks angry ask why Vader never thought to look on Tatooine ever...I mean he only came from there ;)

BTW I dont think Yoda taught Obiwon as a youngling since he was Qui-gon's Padawan...much like Anakin was Obiwon's. Anakin was never taught by Yoda either. (I am sure I could find that info somewhere...but my geekdom only goes so far :p )

Lucas had this ridiculous idea of needing to connect everything, show it as one long epic that flowed like a river. Problem was the more he connected things the more the vagaries that made the original trilogy cool and mysterious became stupid and massive plotholes.

Yep. He created an entire galaxy to work with - and then went to ridiculous lengths to insist that everything of importance, ever was done by the same 5 characters.

That's why I said this:

If Luke had really been placed into hiding, he could've been taken to any of the thousand-plus other planets in that galaxy to hide, and not kept the surname SKYWALKER. He may as well have put up a giant sign that read Boy for slaughter. Come get your fresh sacrifice right here!

Yeah I can excuse the droid stuff with Obiwan needing Luke to do these things on his own and let stuff develop that way, rather than him telling Luke everything right then and there and more or less forcing him into it. Playing the long game, if you will. The other stuff, well, I ignore the details and have fun with it.

Yoda pretty much instructed everyone. He's the wise old guy who has a tidbit of wisdom anytime he walks into the room. It's about as much a stretch to say he was taught by Yoda as to say Darth Vader killed Anakin.

Obiwan not really recognizing that Leia is an alternative can come back to him being so hyper focused on Luke much like the movies. Leia isn't shown to have any real force powers until Luke points it out to her in the third film. It'd be easy for Obiwan to just assume Leia wasn't going to amount to much in terms of the force because he views Luke as the important one. Repeat of his mistake with Anakin.

Re: Movie Thread: Grab Some Popcorn, Enjoy The Show

Strong recommendation for Inside Out. Supposedly a "young adult" movie, it's for anyone who remembers the mood swings of those teen years, and handles them with surprising sophistication and grace.

There are some wonderful subtleties as well. Really excellent movie, and there is something very atypical about it which makes it even better.

Re: Movie Thread: Grab Some Popcorn, Enjoy The Show

Yoda: Told you I did. Reckless is he. Now, matters are worse.
Obi-Wan: That boy is our last hope.
Yoda: No. There is another.

I always just assumed that was foreshadowing Leia being Luke's sister, nothing more.

Paging Sir Tokein, white courtesy wand please.
