Re: Movie Thread: Grab Some Popcorn, Enjoy The Show

Picked up The Wild Bunch today from the library. Don't remember when I saw it last.

Two films, actually. Wild Bunch and Traitors. Looking forward to both.

Looking forward to Crimson Peak this weekend - though we'll be seeing it during the day, as I'm a bit of a scardy cat. I do love me some del Toro and I am a fan of the good looking features of Tom Hiddleston.

Went to the 1155 showing of Crimson Peak today. Enjoyed it. Visually gorgeous. The story was good, not great, but the feel and sets were amazing. Had that great creepy vibe without the use of jump out scares, achieved the Gothic horror feel that del Toro had said he was trying to achieve.

Pitch Perfect 2:

Predictable arc, but frankly, the ad-libs/general dialogue is what makes it a very funny movie. If you like the first one, the sequel is worth it. If you haven't seen the first one, I have to admit, I'm rather disappointed.

The Decline of Western Civilization. Classic punk documentary I hadn't seen since it came out in 1980. Great performances, and poignant interviews, particularly with the Germs and Darby Crash who died prior to the film's release. They're all so young. You can also see how much depth there is behind the eyes of people like John Doe, Billy Zoom, Lee Ving, and Claude Bessy. If you have any interest in the LA punk scene, or really in music history, this is a must-see.

The Germs segment is on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ztzQiN51aM (NSFW -- well duh)

Fun trivia: Nicole Panter, who leads that clip, lived for a while with Philip K. Dick and her now-ex-husband, Gary, who is best friends with Matt Groening. Small world.

God, haven't seen that film since it first came out, back in the early 80's. For an interesting counterpoint, you need to see Decline, Part 2, which deals with the 80's hair-metal scene. Hilarious in it's complete and utter vapidity and stupidity. You see Ozzy Ozbourne in his bathrobe, frying up like an entire pound of bacon, and some other dude whose name I forget, drunkenly lounging in the pool at his mom's house.

Ahh, here it is. Mom is none too pleased.

Another interesting watch from about that same time is Suburbia. Not the Linklater film of the same name, but a film about punk kids in LA. Flea has a supporting role in this one.

Since we're on the topic, I recommend What We Do Is Secret.

And unsurprisingly considering the genre, I read somewhere that he actually faked the whole scene.

Ozzy, on the other hand, was probably a legit mess.

Ozzy acting a mess? I'll believe that when I see it.

I've gotta buy that sometime. Right now I've got Westways to the World(the Clash) sitting here, and I haven't had time to watch it yet.

There's another great documentary that's been playing on cable lately that i'm just infatuated with, can't get enough of it. The Jam: About the Young Idea. Got me on a bit of a Jam kick lately, can't get enough of them.

Some of you are fans of the horror genre...me, not so much. But, I watched a very good "gothic ghost" movie last night from 1961: The Innocents with Deborah Kerr in the leading role. Based on Henry James's The Turn of the Screw with screenplay cowritten by Truman Capote. The young boy who plays Miles was also in Village of the D a m n ed.

Might be a good Halloween movie.

It's a good treatment of a story that probably really shouldn't be made into a movie because the scariness takes flight in the reader's imagination. I'm currently reading Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House, and it, similarly, is incomparably better than the 1963 film, even though the latter is really very good (and has both Riff from West Side Story and Miss Moneypenny!)

British soldier is accidentally left behind in the wrong part of Belfast after a "home search" and riot.

Entertaining, for sure. It's more about how complicated all the relationships were between the UK, IRA, and Irish UK supporters. Worth a watch.

I watched the HBO film, The Leisure Class, last night. This is the movie that came out of the most recent Project Greenlight on HBO.

Man, I'm not sure you could make a worse movie. Completely unwatchable, and it's only 90 minutes long.

What was that piece of trash Skit 49 or something? It'd be hard to beat that. I made it through about 3.5 minutes before I shut it off. And ALL the stars were in that one...

Oddly enough, my local library will be screening this Friday night. I saw the messageboard out front and thought, nah, it can''t be the same film. But sure enough.........

Do I pass up Maine at BC to go see this instead? Probably will be more entertaining.

Re: Movie Thread: Grab Some Popcorn, Enjoy The Show

Watching Ratatouille, probably my favorite Pixar movie.

I have Inside Out coming to me from Amazon. Everything I've heard about it is positive...
