Movie Thread: Grab Some Popcorn, Enjoy The Show

Re: Movie Thread: Grab Some Popcorn, Enjoy The Show

It's a timeless classic that was heavily dated the moment it came out.

Speaking of, Semi Tough was on today and I caught a tiny piece of it -- probably haven't seen it in 20 years. I'm not sure there is a better movie to have captured THE SEVENTIES in amber. I used to think Slap Shot was the most 70s movie of all time, but I stand corrected.

There are a lot of 70's movies I haven't watched, because they seem to be SOOOOO 70's. It's a fault on me, sure, but man. Any other decade, I'll give a whirl, but that decade...dunno why...just seems so bad.

I grew up (such as it is) during the decade. I have no desire to revisit it.

The 70's, like the 60's, didn't happen at the same time everywhere. Dr. Mrs. K is from AZ and her 80's were the 70's. In NYC the 70's happened for a quarter of an hour in early 1969, as the city jumped from the 60's to the 80's. So YMMV.

There are obviously great movies from that decade (some of the best ever, even). But the average movie from that decade really does not appeal to me whatsoever. And I'll give just about anything a whirl.

Well, I was more just talking about the feel and aesthetics of the actual decade, not its movies. Generally speaking, the decade reminds me of junior high school. I don't think anybody has good associations with that.

No. I have no desire to see over-hair-sprayed bangs, neon colors, or pinned jeans at any point in my life. (Yes, that will date me to a point)

Films from the 70's in which the decade was the backdrop include Smokey and the Bandit, Rocky, Jaws, Taxi Driver, The French Connection, Annie Hall, Halloween, Close Encounters, Carrie, Deliverance, Superman, All the President's Men, Saturday Night Fever, Dog Day Afternoon, Dirty Harry, Kramer vs. Kramer, The Warriors...

I've seen the starred ones, and have little to no interest in the non-starred ones.

Wait - so the Mets won TWO WS titles in the 80's?

Byzantium

A very odd movie, about 2 women who hide out in a seashore town, due to the secret they keep. Wasn't exactly sure I was watching what I thought I was watching, but the movie did come together nicely by the end. Of course, it was a predictable ending, no twists or turns, but no biggie, really. Decent watch.

And, due to the recent talk, next up is The Bounty (that Gibson movie).

Re: Movie Thread: Grab Some Popcorn, Enjoy The Show

What is the recent infatuation with finding a Daniel Craig replacement for James Bond?

Craig hasn't admitted that he wants out, he still is under contract for one more film (from what I've read). Now everyone's suggestions are just a short list of "hot" actors. Idris Elba? Hugh Jackman? Damian Lewis? People do realize that if Craig doesn't break contract early, the next bond film will come out in 2017ish, with the "New" Bond film not starting until 2018. Elba would be 46, Jackman 49, Lewis 47. That's Roger Moore-esque age. There is a lot more physical demand on the Bond actors since Connery and Moore's eras, that I don't see any actor making a Daniel Craig type bond. And I don't know how a campy Bond would be received.

Jackman would be riding his Wolverine success... That has shown he can do a "physical" role... Just don't think he's a good fit for the overall character...

The Bounty:

Great cast: Gibson, Hopkins, DDL, Olivier, Neeson. The movie did get better as it proceeded, I had my doubts at first. While not an amazing movie, it was pretty darn good. Apparently, it's also the most accurate portrayal of the actual mutiny on the Bounty.

burt did a lot of movies in the 70s. many not very good..... longest yard was very good. i love smokey 1, which may be the best movie ever made :D

no interest in AtPM?!? or Dirty Harry?!?

i remember going to see Close Encounters when it came out and i was small. loved it. it was making cable rounds couple months ago and had to watch again. still enjoyed it.

I loved the first half of Casino Royale with Craig's sociopath Bond. That's what those guys are in real life, and it made a jarring change. Bond should be older -- he is, after all, The Most Interesting Man in the World. I can't think of a current actor who screams Bond to me. Damian Lewis could be a deeply strange -- he was amazing on Wolf Hall; I could see him as a Bond villain.

I watched that a few months back and would agree with the assessment. The girl is played by Saoirse Ronan, who looks like she's going to break out have a good career. I watched the movie because she was in it, after seeing her in another movie called Hanna, playing a girl raised by her father to be the perfect assassin - a fairly straight forward movie but she played her part very well.
