Re: Movie Thread #50: Godzilla gives us permission to nuke our enemies

So...the new Terminator movie is a remake of Logan?

Re: Movie Thread #50: Godzilla gives us permission to nuke our enemies

The topic of classic films came up at GPL. Not necessarily the best but some of my favorites:

The Godfather
Psycho
Lawrence of Arabia
Breakfast at Tiffany's
West Side Story
Dracula/Frankenstein/The Wolf Man
Laura
It Happened One Night
Seven Samurai
Carnival of Souls
North by Northwest
La Dolce Vita
Roman Holiday
On the Waterfront
12 Angry Men
L’Inferno
The Haunting

I'll post what I posted over there, stuff that I hadn't seen listed:
His Girl Friday
The Public Enemy
White Heat
Freaks
She Done Him Wrong
Scarface (yes, the Pacino one is a remake)
Night Of The Living Dead
Reefer Madness

Re: Movie Thread #50: Godzilla gives us permission to nuke our enemies

The Terminator trailer looks great.

Although It’s difficult to watch that without hearing James Cameron’s “T3 without me” mantra and his recent comments on Star Wars and Marvel being redundant, no new ideas etc

I mean c’mon, you’re producing Terminator 6 (or 3 given he’s ignoring the rest) and 3 Avatar sequels and Disney is the problem?

Some personal favorites
The Big Country
Young Frankenstein
Blazing Saddles
Paths of Glory
All Quiet on the Western Front (original)
Keys of the Kingdom
How Green is My Valley
Rio Grande
Fort Apache
She Wore A Yellow Ribbon
Piku (Bollywood) (Netflix)
Slap Shot

Debbie Does Dallas
The Devil in Miss Jones
Ilsa, She-Wolf of the SS
Deep Throat

Oh wait, wrong "classics". :p

I've grown to hate lists. Sue me.

Re: Movie Thread #50: Godzilla gives us permission to nuke our enemies

You are just begging for someone to post a "List of Best Lists" to annoy you ;)

(I agree btw)

Re: Movie Thread #50: Godzilla gives us permission to nuke our enemies

I like that it is "your favorite" and not "best."

Some of my favorites are really not good movies. Just re-watched Goonies this weekend, b/c someone (around my age) HADN'T SEEN IT.

We MST3K'd it. And we realized how bad it really was. However, still an 80s classic, and I still like it.

4 Avatar sequels. Which are now owned by...Disney.

Psst. That's what all "best" lists are. Subjective judgments are called that for a reason. There are no objective aesthetic standards; it's all just consensus and scoping your audience. Somewhere there's a guy who will argue Leonard Part 6 is an "objectively" better film than Citizen Kane with such conviction than each of us will begin to believe him after a while.

De gustibus non est disputandum.

Re: Movie Thread #50: Godzilla gives us permission to nuke our enemies

Not necessarily. I wouldn't argue that Citizen Kane is not one of the best movies of all time given the consensus, same with 2001. However I personally find both to be overrated and wouldn't put either in my own personal Top 20.

But there are an infinite number of ways of scoping consensus and none of those are objective because they are also a matter of taste.

It's subjectivity all the way down.

Or as Hume said, there is no way to get from an is to an ought.

Mookie never heard of them

Goodness, they are so up your street. I've heard. The poster alone:

The Night of the Hunter. Set your dvr for TCM at 4:30 this afternoon for one of Mitchum's best.

I never have heard of this, either, and now I want to watch it. It looks horrible. :D
