More about expansion for women's hockey

Re: More about expansion for women's hockey

Any more news on Schools adding D1 Women's Hockey or schools moving up to D1? I think Merrimack, Michigan were looking to add and St. Anselm, U of RI looking to move up.

Michigan?? You've been hitting the kool-aid a bit hard.

Re: More about expansion for women's hockey

Merrimack got audited by the Title IX team and was found to have several big violations. They have not been giving the women the same opportunity and benefit as they do the men. The move to add women's hockey and other women's sports was only after they received the results of the federal audit.

Re: More about expansion for women's hockey

More news on Women's hockey at Michigan. I've been told by the AD Dave Brandon that the women's club team is moving up to Varsity Club status. That is the transitioning point for programs at Michigan looking to jump to varsity status. The Men's and Women's lacrosse programs recently made the jump.

Looks like it will be 2015-16 or 2016-17.

It's been said by a number of different people here that Red Berenson has always been very opposed to Michigan fielding a D1 women's team, and his opposition to it has held sway over the administration, at least up until this point. But is it possible that Red is losing the clout he's had in the past, either due to the very poor year his men's team is having? Or has he simply just changed his mind?

Possibly he just changed his mind. He's on his way out it's been apparent. There have been games where assistant Brian Wiseman is clearly coaching the team. His contract extension goes until 2015-16, which is believed to be his last season.

If the NCAA comes calling and Michigan is not title ix compliant old Red may not have any say in the matter

Don't know the layout, but wouldn't be surprised if the "delay/opposition" was along the lines of Jack Parker's "not until there is a new building" at BU. As soon as the Terriers had a new barn, BU added a women's varsity team.

There is currently 3 options for venues I've been told. There is the Ann Arbor Ice Cube, a 1K seat arena off campus that the US NDTP Under-18 team plays in. The Coliseum, a 1K seat intramural ice rink used by the men's team from 1922-23 - 1972-73. And of course, there is Yost.

I do not understand this 2nd building excuse. A 2nd sheet of ice nearby OK. How do a men's and women's basketball team function with only one court to play in? Yes some schools do have a practice court with no seats.

Well if you ever get a peek under the stands at WBA you will instantly understand. Basically it comes down to the place was barely fit for one tennant let alone two.

This is really quite pathetic! Michigan is a great hockey state, with a great men's college hockey tradtion, and yet somehow it has allowed itself to become the laughing stock of women's college hockey. Maybe, someday, it will get its head out of the sand and start moving more quickly into the 21st century.

You should be bad mouthing state instead of Michigan. They aren't even considering adding the sport. Their ADept is not even close to the boom Michigan's is in right now.

Re: More about expansion for women's hockey

To be fair, every university in the state shares some of the blame; only Wayne State ever tried to make a go of it at the D-I level. D-III Adrian and Finlandia are the only varsity women's hockey programs in the entire state.
