Re: MN Golden Gophers @ UND Sioux: Arrogant vs Offensive!

Lucia and Grand Forks native Grant Potulny to the rescue. Speaking of sour tastes, how does that feel for Gophers fans that it took a ND boy to lead you to the big one?

I just feel sick about it. Just sick.

Re: MN Golden Gophers @ UND Sioux: Arrogant vs Offensive!

Woog had two bad seasons as MN's coach. That's it. TWO. Certainly not the 10 you claimed earlier in this thread, unless you think running a team into the ground includes advancing to the frozen four and/or winning WCHA regular season / playoff titles.

Well, his last few years he did run them into the ground. And thats why he was fired or let go or quit or whatever. Lucia shows up, recruits a little better, and the team comes back.

Re: MN Golden Gophers @ UND Sioux: Arrogant vs Offensive!

If he did such an amazing job, why isn't he still there? He had good years early, and bad years late.

He had to leave because he was offered a color commentator job and figured that would be the best way to get under the skin of uneducated, Sue fans.

What color is reality on your planet?

Grant Potulny. ****.

smart guy to leave North Dakota, he knew they were going into a decades long dry spell. besides, he was only recruited to get his little brother, anyway.

Re: MN Golden Gophers @ UND Sioux: Arrogant vs Offensive!

Am I wrong about that? If so, explain. And the answer to your question is green. Bright ****ing green.

That explains volumes.

Boosters wanted an NCAA title. It had been a long time. Woog had his shot at it numerous times and it didn't happen. Lucia would probably be in the same boat right now after the two years he has had but he won two titles back-to-back. It happens. Things go up and things go down. I can't imagine the folks in North Dakota are going to put up with Hakstol (despite his great record) forever if there are no NCAA banners hung.

Wrong. His junior coach in Lincoln asked/advised UND to take him. Dean Blais said no and picked Tyler Palmiscino instead. So his coach then asked/advised Minnesota to take him, they said yes, and Ryan went there because the bridge at UND was long burned.

No worse than Sue fans feel that it's taken a small army of players and coaches from MN over the years to lead the Sue to anything.

Yeah, and no banners since the new REA opened. Coincidince?

He only had two bad years, and they were the last two. The third to last year he was at the helm, MN was co-WCHA champions.

As for national titles, consider the following:
- In '89, a Woog-coached team was a shot off the pipe away from winning it.
- In '02, MN had to tie it with the goalie pulled in the final minute, then got the benefit of a non-call in OT before winning it.
- In '03, MN survived an OT scare against Michigan in the semifinal - a game MN would have almost certainly lost if Paul Martin hadn't blocked a sure-goal by getting in front of a puck heading for the open net in the 3rd.

If the puck goes in for Skarda in '89 and the other two situations reverse in '02 and '03, does that suddenly mean Woog is a better coach / recruiter than Lucia?
