MLB 2022: Playing Ball, But Is Anyone Still Watching?

Pitch clock is the best thing to happen to baseball since steroid testing.

3 batter minimum is up there, too.

Just think of all the sparkling ESPN commentary we're going to miss.

This may actually save baseball. But stay with it, don't make it like the annual balk rule.

I'm amazed the sponsors allowed it, it's going to destroy their micro-ads and even the impact of their on screen crap.

Ads don't matter without eyeballs.

WBC kicks off tonight with Cuba and the Netherlands in Taiwan. Tokyo group starts tomorrow, with the Phoenix and Miami pools starting on Saturday, which includes the US vs Great Britain. Not great for the east coasters, though. The US is in Phoenix and got the late game each day, so Saturday is actually their earliest start all of their games at 9pm. The rest are all at 10.

Unfortunately some of the big names keep dropping out to injuries. Vlad tweaked his knee last week so he’s out for the Dominicans.

Jose Quintana got hurt on the last day before the WBC and now he won't be starting the season for us (fracture).

I had no idea where Jose Quintana was from, but as soon as you said he "won't be starting for us" I knew it had to be some random country and that you're claiming the team as yours because your fourth cousin once had drinks with someone from there.

I think he meant won’t be starting for the Mets.

Plus we know Kep will be rooting for the Czechs in this tournament.

I claim the 4 countries of my ancestry, just as many people do. I am deeply sorry this makes you insecure. Perhaps a larger truck or a more watered down beer will help?

You really owned me there, except... I don't own a vehicle and I either walk, bike, or take public transport every day. And I live in Bavaria, so only drink beer that follows the Reinheitsgebot. Otherwise, you were spot on with your criticism.

Again, I am very sorry this is causing you such acute anxiety. It's a shame that your well being is conditional upon others' reinforcement, and that you assume this must be true of everyone, but I'm told there are other ways to compensate. Please use the excellent European health system to seek help.

I really want to believe there is a CZ team in the WBC.

BTW, I root for the US. It's only hoops and sometimes hockey where I spurn them.

Good news, there is a Czechia team! (still going by Czech Republic, is it only hockey that goes by Czechia?) They're in the Tokyo group with Japan, Korea, China, and Australia.

Best I can tell they're all actually from the Czech Republic and all have other jobs. Unlike the Great Britain team that is half Americans and Canadians with ancestry.

Cuba is letting defectors play for the first time ever, so Cespedes, Moncada, and Robert Jr among others are playing.

Didn’t help them as Netherlands wins the first game 4-2.

Panama beat Taiwan 12-5.
Aussies upset Korea 8-7.
Netherlands goes 2-0 with a 3-1 win over Panama.

Ohtani has 5Ks through four innings, no walks, one hit, and just hit a 2 RBI double to put Japan up 3-0 in the 4th.

Cuba and Italy are also playing, tied 0-0 early.

Japan dispatches China 8-1.

Italy (really the Italian-American heritage team) beats Cuba 6-3 in ten innings. The Cubans now find themselves with their backs against the wall. An 0-2 start with Panama and Taiwan still to play.

Italy is basically another US team.
Great Britain is basically another US team (plus a lot of Bahamians)

The Czechs on the other hand are almost entirely from the Czech Republic (only 4 Americans, rest are Czechs). Confusing though because there is one person as listed from Czechoslovakia with a May 92 birthday, yet there are others born before that who list Czech Republic as their birth country. Does that guy just really miss the unification?

This Czechia team ain't half bad. Up 3-0 in the third and left quite a few on base in the first two innings. Not bad for a team of mostly amateurs.

On the other hand, China is not good. Apparently their league shut down during Covid so these are mostly professional turned amateur players, but I'm not sure anyone on the team can hit 90 on the radar gun. Nor at they very accurate with 16 walks against Japan in Game 1 and have already given up a few so far. Sweet jerseys, though.

Apparently their manager is a neurologist.

They opened with a come from behind 8-5 win against China.
