Re: MLB 2019: Every Year at Playoff Time, The Dodgers Find A Way to Choke.

I'm terrified they've ruined it. I loved how sh-tty it was.

Put it this way: I prefer Shea to Citi.

Good God, what?!

At least Fenway has character, which is why I can understand people still love it even though it is waaaay past it's sell by date.

But Shea never had character. Ever. It was just another one of those horrible, horrid, pathetic, putrid cookie-cutter multi-purpose stadiums that blighted the sports architecture landscape of the 70s which needed to be replaced the day it opened.

My very point. Although Shea lacked any individuality I still prefer it to the forced faux-nostalgic Citi. What the Disney parks are doing is faking character by prefabbing it. It's not real; it's just the apotheosis of marketing. It's faked nostalgia. There was a reason to have parks built in such weird shapes in the early 20th century -- they were jamming them into rectangular city blocks. Now it's just using that as a cheap motif to call up a certain (again, fake) emotional response.

It's the difference between this:

and this:

Lying is way worse than being boring.

I used to like that big scrap metal place across the street from the parking lot at Shea. Nothing screamed out "ambiance" quite like that. :D

A lot of that stuff is still there -- there's a murderer's row (literally) of Mexican and mob auto body shops. Bulldozing it was part of a whole other Wilpon land grab that's been stuck in local government bribery hell for a decade.

Oh, I got why you don't like Citi even before you explained it. But that doesn't mean you can't hate Shea also.

Re: MLB 2019: Every Year at Playoff Time, The Dodgers Find A Way to Choke.

If you're scoring at home it turns out the Mets offensive ineptitude is stronger kung fu than the Natinals bullpen incompetence, but only by the slimmest possible margin.

I didn't like Shea.

I hate Citi.

We lived in North Jersey and Dad's office had season tickets to the Yankees, so most of my youth MLB experience was at YS 1.0. Shea was nice, but compared to the original Yankee Stadium, there is no comparison.

I should probably waddle up to Wrigley at some point and see what the Rickets' makeover has done there... Like others have said, people love the nostalgia but holy crap was that place a Sh*t hole of a stadium 5 years ago....

I kinda look at arenas/stadiums like bars. Do you want one with all the bells and whistles and the cool kids? Or do you want one that is kinda run down, only the townies go there, and you can soak up nostalgia like no tomorrow? Sometimes it's the former, sometimes it's the latter.

The chicken wire "netting" on the concourse to catch the chunks of structural concrete that was falling from the second deck just added to the charm of Wrigley.

Wrigley was a fun trip. Bathrooms are ok. We were never in the outfield though. It’s definitely worth a trip.

Did you p*ss in a trough though? That's the experience right there.

The Metrodump had troughs (although iirc they were eventually replaced). For a while it seemed normal.

Huh. I dont remember them around 90 when I went to a game there. Then again I was eight, so my memories weren't really of where I peed at.

What I do remember is Kirby Puckett was lazy fielding grounders in pre-game warmups, and would just dig his toe into the turf and pop the ball into the air to catch it with his glove when it rolled onto his foot. :D
