MLB 2019: Every Year at Playoff Time, The Dodgers Find A Way to Choke.

Over at Deadspin (yes, I know) a Commenter came up with a totally bizarre suggestion that I love the more I think about it.

A homerun ends an inning.

Give it a day to swirl around in your head. Trust me.
ya no. I can't see any positives. Unless you are just against HRs.

Re: MLB 2019: Every Year at Playoff Time, The Dodgers Find A Way to Choke.

Eliminating HR like that would alter the game too much IMO.

Has any rule change altered the fundamental nature of a sport to this degree (eliminating 40-60% of scoring opportunity in this case)? Only thing I can equate is the shot clock in basketball, but that didn't alter how teams were putting the ball in the hoop per se, just how often that needed to happen...

Re: MLB 2019: Every Year at Playoff Time, The Dodgers Find A Way to Choke.

So you also want to ban shifts. As this is essentially the same type of rules interference.

I understand that rules by definition interfere with games. But this is an extreme case of it.

I think shifts are hilarious. I'd never ban them.

Obviously I think this as a rule change would create a new sport -- it wouldn't be baseball anymore. The DH meant the AL no longer plays baseball. So I am not a serious advocate. But I love it as a thought exercise.

One tweak: inside-the-park homeruns permit the inning to continue.

Since we're all up for LOLMets, here, a gift.

Guy charging $50K to speak says others are selfish. Though once that haircut goes full Richard Spencer, I imagine he can get more money in the right (pun intended) circles.

He hit .193 in AAA last year.

Ummm, a HR ends the inning, or the half inning? If the former the visiting team could homer every inning and the home team would never get an at bat. I bet that would be good for attendance.

Half innings, obvs.

Imagine instructing guys on launch angle and bat speed to maximize gappers, doubles, low liners. But homeruns would also become more attractive late in close games, and of course in extra innings. I love the strategic element of this. A pitcher with a big lead can also just toss a lollipop in there -- very hard to place it for a double (it will hang up) and if it leaves the park big deal.

As big swings are less incentified, walks and strike outs decrease. Small ball and speed make a comeback, since that's what gives you big innings with crooked numbers.

Or just move all the fences out to 700 ft.

Or make HR automatic ground rule triples.

Eliminate fences entirely. Have the field be infinite, like God and Abner intended. This would also eliminate wrap-around seating which is another tool of the devil. Stadiums should be open to the sky above and to the fields (mountains, ocean, whatever) beyond.

When Trout is up play 3 IF and station a rover OF deep in the pull field. 500-foot long outs.

Allow hitters to re-round the bases on the longest hits. Inside the park 7-baggers.

Cubbies commit two errors and give up 4 runs in the first. They come back in the bottom with a single, two doubles and three home runs for a 5-4 lead, still with only one out.

Wind blowing out at Wrigley, so hold onto your hats.

Bottom of the third. Two more home runs, one a slam, and it's 10-4. This is not your daddy's baseball. Those guys cannot sacrifice bunt to save their souls.

Edit: After the slam, three straight walks. Ugly.

Honestly? I kind of like it. Especially the more I think about it.

Best part is the guy getting the save in a 17-8 win.

Ha
Wasn’t there a game In the last six or seven years where a team won by 30 runs and still got a save? I want to say it was the rangers.
