MLB 2018.1: ...And The Nationals Will Not Make It Out of the First Round

Re: MLB 2018.1: ...And The Nationals Will Not Make It Out of the First Round

People are also going to poop themselves when they see the price tag, too. That one might end up being a $2 billion ballpark. The place is going to have to literally crumble before talk gets serious. I suspect that both the Red Sox and Cubs are going to hang on to their parks as long as they absolutely possibly can.

Detroit spent $863 million to replace Joe Louis Arena for the Red Wings, and to move the Pistons back downtown. That area was NOT exactly a good neighborhood beforehand. Now just imagine what it's going to cost just to procure the land in Boston. It's going to hurt.

They would have to temporarily play in another city (at Gillette where the Pats play?) and rebuild right on Fenway's ashes - there isn't any land around the park to acquire. I think if the Sox continue on the upswing, the people might pay for a new place, but it'll be awhile after the last few years' of mediocre play and poor PR

Re: MLB 2018.1: ...And The Nationals Will Not Make It Out of the First Round

I don't see how you could rebuild right there. There's already no room in left field, and let's be honest. Any new ballpark in Boston is going to require 10,000 more seats. You're going to have to have room to put them somewhere. Left field is already 310 down the line, so you can't move that in at all. You can't go full Polo Grounds and have it be 260' down the line anymore. I suspect that they're going to have to move to another part of Boston. The days of building a ballpark around a city block have been long gone for 60+ years, ever since O'Malley moved the Dodgers out of Brooklyn.

And again, for everyone else, we're a long way off from getting serious about this.

The only way you could do it on the current spot would be to have crazy angled seats. Otherwise, you're probably looking well outside the city. The only spaces left that would be feasible are part of the Emerald Necklace (a chain of parks throughout the Boston area) and I think a bunch of them are nature preserves.

I'm in favor of it as I can't stand Fenway. I was there for the Foo Fighters on Sunday and had great seats for the concert -- my seats faced center field. So...perfect for a concert (they set up the stage in Center Field), but I can't imagine trying to sit there for an actual game. The ones we have for Pearl Jam (Night 1), the seats are so small that tcbg literally can't sit -- he's too tall and too wide. They at least would be okay for a ballgame as they're on the 3rd base side and not behind a post (like our seats to one of the 2016 PJ shows).

Re: MLB 2018.1: ...And The Nationals Will Not Make It Out of the First Round

Exactly. And, if we want to be honest, a good deal of Oakland's problem is of their own doing. In the early 90's, when the A's were the dominant team and there were concerns about whether the Giants were going to bolt for St. Petersburg, Oakland ceded the territorial rights of San Jose to the Giants. It now just so happens that San Jose is where the A's would probably ideally like to build their new digs. Problem is, now the Giants are asserting their territorial rights to San Jose.
Nah. The real problem is/was the Raiders. Oakland only wanted to build for one of them, and neither really like the Coliseum much. Raiders are leaving which opens the door for the A's.

We're looking at two sites and should have an economic deal done by the end of the year.

I'd tell the M's to stick it up their ***. I don't know where they think they're going to go. Montreal is just about the only viable option. I'm sure they'd LOVE to play in Olympic Stadium for a couple years....
If it’s up to the people of Seattle they probably will. Heck they did with the original vote anyway.

Re: MLB 2018.1: ...And The Nationals Will Not Make It Out of the First Round

I'm also pi**ed at the Rangers for wanting out of the Ballpark in Arlington just because it's not air conditioned to their current liking.

you mean.. at all? :D I agree it's their own **** fault. The fact that it's hot in Texas is not exactly a news flash. It was about 97 when I was there, and it wasn't THAT bad (a lot less humidity than, say, Houston). All other hot locations (besides Atlanta) were smart enough to put roofs on their ballparks.

Could not figure out why Atlanta needed a new park, besides that they didn't like the convenient location, and wanted to make it harder to get there. ;)

You're sarcasm is noted. :D

Driving *through* Atlanta to get to a game was a pain. Went five years ago and stayed with friends in Acworth. The drive in was awful, and in typical "cheap tax zone" built ballparks, all that surrounded Turner Field were parking lots, empty lots, and abandoned buildings. It was on par to a trip to US Cellular Field, minus the L train.

Re: MLB 2018.1: ...And The Nationals Will Not Make It Out of the First Round

O's have won 3 of 4 now. To match the Mets they'll have to go 11-46 the rest of the way. It might be possible since their remaining schedule has a lot of Boston, NYY, Cleveland, and the top three in the West, but it's looking more and more like they'll escape historic futility.

Re: MLB 2018.1: ...And The Nationals Will Not Make It Out of the First Round

And another comeback tonight, this one down 5-1 in the 7th, Khrush gets a three-run homer to cut it to 5-4...then in the 9th, Khrush hits a two-run, two-out, two-strike home run to win us the game.

This team is more fun than yours

Rockies got your tongue? ;)

At least the 1899 Cleveland Spiders record of 20-134 is safe for another season.:)

Re: MLB 2018.1: ...And The Nationals Will Not Make It Out of the First Round

Interesting factoid

@CapCareyWDT: From 1920-68 the Yankees only had four seasons where Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio or Mickey Mantle weren’t playing on the team (3 of those were during World War 2)... 21 of the 27 World Championships came in those years

Re: MLB 2018.1: ...And The Nationals Will Not Make It Out of the First Round

Pitcher for the Braves today had 2 strikes, 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th... and couldn't even get a complete game out of it.

Re: MLB 2018.1: ...And The Nationals Will Not Make It Out of the First Round

But he did have a Josh Hader save after the game.

Those championships were won between 1923 and 1962, and there were 20 of them, not 21. Think about that for a minute. A 40-year run where they gobbled up exactly half of the World Championships.

Somewhere between 1960 and 1962 the entire franchise got old, from ownership, to the front office, to the scouts, to the players. Casey Stengel was fired after 1960 at age 70. George Weiss, the GM who put that team together, was also dismissed. He was 66. Now, Ralph Houk was a very good manager in Casey's place, but Roy Hamey was certainly no George Weiss. Webb and Topping would sell the franchise to CBS in 1964.

1964 was the last year that Mickey Mantle was really THE Mickey Mantle, but the core around him was either elsewhere, retired, or aging quickly themselves. The problem was, the scouts who discovered them were old as well, and didn't find the replacements necessary to contend. The Yankee dynasty from 1949-1964 was the greatest dynasty in the history of the big four sports. 16 seasons, 14 pennants, 9 championships. After 1964 the franchise crumbled.

The MLB draft did not come along until 1965. Free agency did not arrive until 1976. Proper scouting and player development, as well as earlier integration, from mid-50s forward could very well have prolonged the Yankees' dominance into the 1970's.

A's have a better record than anyone in the NL and yet are still 2 games out of the playoffs.

The National League is wide open this year. The American League is 80% settled. Cleveland, Houston, New York and Boston are mortal locks for the postseason, and Seattle and Oakland are going to drag race to the finish for the 5th spot.

The American League has two teams that are an embarrassment to MLB: The O's and the Royals. Neither is on pace to win 50 games. The White Sox are bad, but not on that level. You're going to have a team like that from time to time, but the Orioles especially are hideous. They're probably going to be eliminated by August 15. At least the Royals won a World Series recently, so they get a pass for the moment.

The National League, OTOH, has some bad teams, but at least they're in the realm of respectability. Sure, the Padres and the Mets are bad, but the Marlins aren't the disaster everyone thought they'd be. Hell, even the Reds are 10 games under .500. Nobody in the NL is on pace to lose 100 games. The AL might have two teams pushing 110.

Add Trea Turner to the list of graduates (Newcolm, Hader) from the John Rocker School of Public Speaking.

Re: MLB 2018.1: ...And The Nationals Will Not Make It Out of the First Round

Raise your hand if you never said anything stupid, racist, homophobic, offensive, etc ever.

This is bullsh* and has to stop. If the person has matured, let it go. If they continue to spew such hatred, then game on.

Re: MLB 2018.1: ...And The Nationals Will Not Make It Out of the First Round

We all have said stupid things. We have all matured and learned that it's wrong to say what we once did.

I agree that there needs to be some forgiveness for youthful indiscression, I just don't know where the line gets drawn.

Should Mark Wahlberg, now an international movie star, be forgiven for assaulting Vietnamese and black men when he was younger?

I'm curious to know who the agent is for these three players, because if they have the same agent, this could be an attack on the agent for being terrible at his job.

Someone needs to have sat down with these kids and just checked their Twitter posts to scrub them clean.
