And the Yankees are done. 3 hits all night.

Re: MLB 2015 - Meet the new boss, same as the old boss!

I mentioned on the Tweeter Machine, that I SHOULD be cheering a NYY loss, but my main team's season ended this past Saturday. The Cubs (secondary, going back to pre-interleague play) are still alive. Either way, meh.

Re: MLB 2015 - Meet the new boss, same as the old boss!

I do not have a good feeling about the Pirates today. I'd take the Cubs in a one-game playoff over anyone right about now.

If the Cubs do win, I'm rooting for them the rest of the way from the NL. The Dodgers and their ginormous payroll are third for me, just because I like Greinke and Kershaw. We do not need to discuss the Mets and the Cardinals.

In the AL, I'd like to see Houston take it. Kansas City is pretty likable, so even though they've won in the past 40 years, they're second for me, then Texas. I'm not over Paul Molitor leaving yet, so sorry Toronto. You've had your World Series in relatively recent history.

Well, since I was so accurate about last night , I might as well keep going. I think Arrieta delivers the Cubs a win tonight. But having to burn Arrieta tonight is going to bite the Cubs. Same with Keuchel and the Astros last night.

When it's all said and done I think it's going to be Toronto and the Dodgers. I'm picking the Dodgers, but I wouldn't be shocked in the least to see Toronto win it.

Arrieta has never pitched in the playoffs. So there is some unknown there for him. Isn't he also due to have a hiccup. I don't mean 7 R or anything. But maybe 3 R in 7 innings.

Where is the Jake Arrieta for NL MVP campaign? He has the same stats as Clayton Kershaw did last year.

Scary how close they are.

2014 Kershaw, 21-3, 1.77 ERA, 239 SO, 198.1 IP, 9 HR, 31 BB, 139 H, 197 ERA+, 1.81 FIP, 0.857 WHIP.
2015 Arrieta, 22-6, 1.77 ERA, 236 SO, 229.0 IP, 10 HR, 48 BB, 150 H, 219 ERA+, 2.35 FIP, 0.865 WHIP.

I feel like this should go in the Nice Planet thread, but the caveman-like responses to Jessica Mendoza's presence in the ESPN booth make me weep for humanity. And most of them hadn't realized she's been doing Sunday Night Baseball for a few weeks now. I thought she did a good job. Having MLB playing experience does not an announcer make. Just ask Tim McCarver and Joe Morgan.

I had never heard her, or even of her. I thought she was fantastic -- they could have just fired the other two yahoos, in particular that herpa-derp Kruk.

ESPN has sucked for 15 years and she's their first worthwhile new talent in 20. What kind of moron didn't like her?

Here's why. You cannot look at his numbers in a vacuum. There are two other pitchers in Kershaw and Greinke that are at least close to his numbers this year. Kershaw (and Verlander in 2011) both blew the field away, and, in Verlander's case, other contenders started leaking oil coming down the stretch in September, where JV went up a level. If Arrieta had those numbers, and the next best pitcher was sitting there at 18-9 with a 2.60 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP, among other stats, you could make a very nice case for Arrieta.

If a pitcher is going to be considered for MVP, he's got to have the Cy Young Award wrapped up, hands down, unanimous vote or awfully darn close. But we do not have that this year.

Looking back at things, there are two cases that immediately come to mind where I believe pitchers got screwed out of MVP awards: Pedro in 1999, and Gooden in 1985.

Cole with no fastball control and probably over-amped. Now his secondary pitch gets crushed. He's not long for this game.

They'd better do something, and quick. There's no Game 2 here, the last time I checked.

That was flat-out stupid on Bryant's part. I don't care if he's a rookie or not.

We would ask McCarver or Morgan, but we wouldn't be able to either understand or make sense of their explanation.
