MLB 2015 - Meet the new boss, same as the old boss!

Nothing special at all happening at Citi Field tonight, with Kershaw going to the 7th...

Re: MLB 2015 - Meet the new boss, same as the old boss!

No, that's the way to handle that. He played that properly.

More SABR chat. I think the strike out is an overrated stat to start with for pitching and that lead me to the following...

FIP (fielding independent pitching) seems like a broken stat. I understand that it wants to isolate a pitchers performance and is better as a predictor than as an indicator of performance, but it relies far too heavily on strikeouts in creating value for a pitcher. So if you pitch to contact or are a ground ball pitcher you will almost never have a good FIP value.

I struggle with the thought that a pitcher should not be using his defense at all in order to considered good.

So you think the "pitch to contact" Gardy run years were successful from the mound? ;)

The A's just have too much ground to make up, not a bad move on their part. Kazmir is serviceable but nothing special and he's had a strange career arc to say the least.

Kazmir for 2 low level prospects is a hell of a get for Houston. He is a solid 2.

8.3k/9 2.38 era 1.09whip .213 baa all very solid numbers

Wonder what Victor Zambrano is doing these days?

He's a rental who's due for some regression. Either way it's a fair trade I'd say.

I'm not saying every pitcher is good at it. So soon you forget those 6 division titles though? ;)

AL Central has an interesting history. I forgot the Indians were actually good at one time (besides 95).

Divisions won (by team)
Cleveland - 7
Minnesota - 6
Detroit - 4
Chicago - 3
Kansas City - 0

Two of the three wild cards the AL Central has won have got to the World Series.

Houston basically gave up nothing for him. I like that Houston is going for it this year. Now if only the Twins would follow suit. A competent catcher or reliever would be nice.

Stephen Vogt (A's) would be a decent add. Wonder if they'd sell him. He has 4 yrs left on contract.

Like anything involving prospects it will take a while to see. Nottingham could certainly be an MLB player and is only 20. The pitcher looks like a potential back end starter, nothing flashy. Good move by Houston, they're in a good position after being horrible for so long, they needed to make a splash.

A catcher with some pop in the bat would be nice. I can't even stomach to watch Suzuki anymore. TR got fleeced but that's nothing new.

I doubt they'd give up an effective player with that many years on his contract unless they get blown away by an offer. The Twins really don't have anything to give up either.

No longer molesting or abusing Gatorade water coolers?

You're thinking of Carlos Z.

Re: MLB 2015 - Meet the new boss, same as the old boss!

Right but he was due to get a huge raise pretty soon and the team was looking to get younger and re-stock the minors. With a team that's on a ridiculous budget you sometimes have to do stuff like that. The window pretty much closed after last year and this year was gonna be a rebuild with or without him. I also thought I remember hearing that he wanted out.

What they got back for him certainly wasn't bad. Barretto looks pretty promising, Lawrie is getting close to the age Donaldson was when he broke out, and pitching depth is never a bad thing.
