I know he's 81, but I don't like the look of Hank Aaron with a cane. That just isn't right.

Hank Aaron broke his hip and had surgery last year, that might be the reason for the cane. He WAS in a a wheelchair.

Dozier says snub me would ya. Goes deeeeeep in his first ever all star at bat.

Dozier drops the mic better than Bryan Cranston.

And very young. Let's hope they stay healthy. I've seen this before, and it didn't end well, then.

Harvey, Wheeler and Matz have already had TJ. deGrom lost September of last year and Montero lost the first half of this year to rotator cuff soreness. Mejia had a scare with a sore elbow but then got his 80 game PED suspension to recover from it. Thor has a very clean motion -- hopefully that will protect him.

7 excellent young pitchers may be some sort of record. They're all going to hit FA at the same time, so the Wilponzies better start spending money.

Yes, it's time to start locking up some of these guys, or if you can't lock them all up, time to start testing the trade market waters to find a bat or two so this team can be a legitimate contender.

I wouldn't be in such a big hurry to lock up a bunch of young arms yet, when you have club control for a few years left. Especially when a couple of them have had arm trouble.

Angels could have their first rain out in 20 years tonight. In contrast, I believe the Rockies have had three snow outs just this season.

You don't know the half of it.

The Rockies have had fourteen home games delayed or postponed by rain this season, for a grand total of 22 hours and 24 minutes. I heard somewhere that's more than the past ten seasons COMBINED.

I have a friend who works as a copy editor for ESPN.com and ESPN The Magazine. I'm trying to get her to track down the record for most time spent in a rain delay by a home team in a season. The Rockies have to be threatening it. Tampa, Miami, Seattle, etc. are rainy, but they have roofs.

More SABR chat. I think the strike out is an overrated stat to start with for pitching and that lead me to the following...

FIP (fielding independent pitching) seems like a broken stat. I understand that it wants to isolate a pitchers performance and is better as a predictor than as an indicator of performance, but it relies far too heavily on strikeouts in creating value for a pitcher. So if you pitch to contact or are a ground ball pitcher you will almost never have a good FIP value.

I struggle with the thought that a pitcher should not be using his defense at all in order to considered good.

Re: MLB 2015 - Meet the new boss, same as the old boss!

Angels were at bat against the Red Sox tied 0-0 in the 2nd.

Eight pitches later 7-0 Angels.

Re: MLB 2015 - Meet the new boss, same as the old boss!

Scrubs getting time in. 11-1 Angels in the 6th. But it is important to note that THE RED SOX SCORED A RUN!! First time since the ASG.

It's not a broken stat and it's proven to be repeatable. K's, HR's and BB's are all something a pitcher actually has control over and are repeatable. K's are also more efficient than groundball outs.

Now obviously if a pitcher has a huge split in ERA and FIP season after season it's worth looking into (say a pitcher is tipping his pitches out of the stretch and getting shelled). Nobody is saying they should never rely on their D. But you can get extremely lucky for a bit and have a good ERA due to sequencing, getting lucky stranding runners, having a great defense vs a bad one, and it's not necessarily predictive of anything. That's really not the case with FIP, generally speaking.

So yeah it's not really broken, it's just better used for predictive purposes.

Obviously a Middlebury grad in the Yankeee PR department
NYYANKEENATION ‏@nyyankeenation
The Yankees win tonight marked Joe Girardi's 700th win as Yankees manager, Congradulations Joe!!!

The A's just have too much ground to make up, not a bad move on their part. Kazmir is serviceable but nothing special and he's had a strange career arc to say the least.
