Ugh.

Mets general manager Sandy Alderson has cancer and will not attend the winter meetings. The cancer is treatable.

The 68-year-old will undergo chemotheraphy and the Mets say he will continue to work with the team, though his role may be limited at times. The type of cancer was not disclosed.

Alderson collapsed during a meeting with reporters at Citi Field following the World Series. It’s unclear if that incident was releated to his condition. He missed the GM meetings shortly thereafter for what the team called a "medical procedure," though they did not elaborate.

That's over $34/year. For a 32 year old who's got almost 2100 innings on that arm already.

We're not far from the first $50 mil/year deal.

Makes you wonder if the D-Backs first choice was a 2nd tier starter like Cueto at $120 mm and then once he turned them down they decided to go all-in. Or were they always in the market for both of them? I know rumors have them going after Mike Leake now.

I know Cueto wants more money, but now he may wonder if he could have ended up as the 1-2 with Greinke on a contender.

This is why I'm happy the Twins don't go after the aces in free agency. Unbelievable numbers.

Or that far from a team with at $500 million annual payroll.

The production history of long term (5+ year) pitcher contracts is not good, it's even worse when pitchers are over 30 when they sign.

I agree. 5 is just about the absolute upper limit that I would go on a pitcher. These 7-10 year deals that take a player to the neighborhood of his 40th birthday are insane. The Tigers are going to learn the hard way with Cabrera. He's still owed $240 mil over the next 8 years, and that's before figuring in either of his 2 option years, at ages 41 and 42.

The sad thing about baseball, is unless a team (prob the Yanks) win a crapload of titles in a row, there will be no salary cap. The fans cannot win. Either root for a completely dominant team for years (even if it's only for the greater good) or deal with the current system.

But then you get teams like KC winning titles and then you get the "the system works" crowd.
Sadly the one offs "prove" the system is fine.
