MLB 2015-16: Grays Sports Almanac Edition

Re: MLB 2015-16: Grays Sports Almanac Edition

I suppose it is that time of year to discuss the Hall of Fame. Griffey might break the record for %, and is a lock to get in. After that, Piazza, Bagwell, and Raines seem like the best bets to get in.

Who would be on your ballot?

I would put in the following:
Ken Griffey, Jr.
Barry Bonds
Roger Clemens
Edgar Martinez
Mike Piazza
Tim Raines
Curt Schilling
Mark McGwire (last year on ballot)
Alan Trammell (last year on ballot)
Mike Mussina

I can't put Bonds in yet. Probably because he seems like a big jerk more than anything. But I'd be on board for the rest of them.

Good quick link to the BR stats for each: http://www.baseball-reference.com/awards/hof_2016.shtml

I bet Griffey will be unanimous. I haven't watched a ceremony in awhile, but I will be tuned in for that one. Absolutely love the guy.

I'm curious how long the unofficial banning of steroid-related players will last. I was just going to say no one has been kept out of the HOF for being monumentally stupid, but then there's Pete Rose, so, yeah. I waver on Bonds and Clemens. It makes me angry that two guys that talented robbed everyone (and themselves) of knowing how good they truly were. I wouldn't let McGwire in - I lump him with Sosa. One trick PED pony.

Isn't there always some idiot who withholds a vote because Ruth wasn't unanimous, so no one can be.

I guess. Looking at the percentage list, you can pick something "wrong" with nearly every player that might cause some grumpy, soul-less writer to withhold his vote. Griffey seems pretty universally loved, but he did suffer from some injuries.

It's interesting that Nolan Ryan has the second-highest percentage ever, because I remember a LOT of discussion during his career that his winning percentage wasn't high enough.

I put McGwire in before Sosa because McGwire actually was pretty good prior to juicing. He was rookie of the year and won a gold glove at first base.

Bonds is a Grade A ******* for certain. He'd be in that HOF too. However, Bonds won three MVPs before juicing, and was clearly a HOFer. If you don't let Bonds in, you can't let anyone who juiced in, or even suspected juicers.

It really surprises me that people are willing to vote in Piazza (who has admittedly used PEDs), yet don't vote for Bonds, Clemens, or McGwire. Now, I'll put them all in because they dominated the sport, but letting Piazza in (and he has a legitimate chance this year) really is confusing if the other juicers aren't included.

2016 Hall of Fame class (330/440 to get in):

Ken Griffey Jr. (99%, missed 3 votes)
Mike Piazza

Disappointed it's only 2 people.

Next were Bagwell, Raines, Hoffman.

How people are dumb enough to leave Griffey off their ballots is beyond me... The fact they take away a ballot because someone made their decision public, but let things like this go is beyond stupidity...

I'm okay with it. 99.3 sets the highest percentage of votes ever.

There's always one or two jackwagons that do something like this. Willie Mays was not unanimous. Neither was Hank Aaron.

I did hear another theory, that I don't think I believe one bit of. There was one argument that any given writer knows that Griffey was a mortal lock for the HOF. So instead of using one of the 10 spaces on him, use it to vote for someone else to help get them in. Do with that what you will.

John Heyman only cast 8 votes (of 10). He did vote Griffey. He must not think there's a backlog.

What about the theory that there are old curmudgeons out there that don't believe anyone can be perfect and NO ONE should ever receive unanimous selection to the Hall.

Ridiculous if you ask me but I've read some things on that.

Only George Washington should ever receive a unanimous vote, dagnabbit!

That's not a theory. That's a badly kept secret.
