Re: MLB 2014: I paid the $20 mil posting fee for the right to start this thread

Ben just said he would have been happy to trade Lester for Porcello straight up in July.

Dry that one out and you can fertilize the lawn. Check out #smearcampaign on twitter for a taste of what is to come.
I don't know who Ben is. With the Sox as far out of it as they were in July, I might make that trade too.

Ben Cherington, Red Sox GM.

He said he was happy with the rotation of Porcillo, Masterton, Buchholz, Miley Cyrus, Joe Kelly and Ryan Dempster. Who is the ace?

Re: MLB 2014: I paid the $20 mil posting fee for the right to start this thread

Twins ge t Ervin Santana for 4 years at 54 million. They need arms and hopefully he isn't another Nolasco.

One of Gru's minions. Probably the one-eyed guy. No, the other one-eyed guy.

A solid cost controlled pitcher still in arbitration for half a year of an ace. For a team that wasn't anywhere close to contending.

IDK, I don't think it's as bad as you're implying. Lester is definitely better and I get that the Red Sox can spend more than most teams, but I can see why he would say that from a contract standpoint.

And that's if you buy that, going forward, Lester is the top-tier pitcher he was in his contract year, and not the good-but-not-great pitcher he was in 2012 and 2013.

Re: MLB 2014: I paid the $20 mil posting fee for the right to start this thread

Sooooo, the Twins might just suck less next year?

Re: MLB 2014: I paid the $20 mil posting fee for the right to start this thread

I thought Dumpster retired?

"This guy's dead."
'Cross him off, then!'

Maybe he meant (or said and I misheard him say) Webster.

And that's if you buy that, going forward, Lester is the top-tier pitcher he was in his contract year, and not the good-but-not-great pitcher he was in 2012 and 2013.

He was pretty decent in Game 5 of the 2013 World Series.

Twins will still suck but they did add Ervin Santana. 4 yrs/$48 mil. Plus 5th yr at $14 mil option.

Payroll over $100 mil so they can pretend they are trying to win.

When I saw the article online, it just said "Twins sign Santana to 4 year deal" (or something to that effect), and I immediately thought the Twins were crazy and had signed Johan Santana to a 4 year deal.

If E. Santana can replicate what Hughes did last season, Hughes picks up where he left off, and Gibson evens things out a bit, the Twins could have a pretty decent rotation. Maybe Nolasco will revert back to 2013 Nolasco, and they might just have 4 quality starters.

That being said, I still don't think the Twins have done enough to get out of the cellar...but I could see them pushing for 75 wins. At the very least, I hope they stay healthy and get full seasons of development out of their key prospects.

Since that time is approaching, who would you include on your HOF ballot for this year?

Here is a link to the ballot...

http://www.baseball-reference.com/awards/hof_2015.shtml

For me:
Craig Biggio - He should have got in last year. 3000+ hits, 7-time All Star, 4 Golden Gloves. He never had that great MVP type season, but he also played in an era where nearly everyone was juicing.
Roger Clemens - I understand the objections based on steroid allegations. However, the guy has arguably the best numbers ever produced by a pitcher in the history of the game. Moreover, he was a likely HOFer before any steroid allegations. He has waited a couple years now...put him in the Hall.
Barry Bonds - Basically the same argument as Clemens.
Mark McGwire - Similar argument to Clemens and Bonds, although I don't feel quite as strongly that McGwire would have made it w/o steroids. That being said, I think he belongs in the HOF.
Randy Johnson - No brainer. 303 wins, 4875 Ks, 10-time All Star, 5 Cy Youngs, World Series MVP...first ballot HOFer...no question
Pedro Martinez - A closer call for me than some of the others, but...211-100 (.684), career 2.93 ERA and 1.054 WHIP, 8-time All Star, 3 Cy Youngs...maybe the greatest stretch ever for a pitcher from 1997-2000. He's a HOFer for sure in my book.
John Smoltz - Another first balloter for me. 213 Wins, 154 saves, career 3.33 ERA and 1.176 WHIP, 8-time All Star, 1 Cy Young. Of the three aces in their first ballot, he's third on my list. However, he's still a HOFer.
Curt Schilling - 216 Wins, career 3.46 ERA and 1.137 WHIP. 6-time All Star, never won a Cy Young, but was tremendous in the post season (11-2, won 3 World Series). He's a HOFer for me.
Mike Mussina - 270 Wins, career 3.68 ERA and 1.192 WHIP. 5-time All Star, never won a Cy Young, but won 7 gold gloves. Nearly 3k SOs...he's very borderline for me, but 270 wins is pretty impressive.
Pete Rose - I would write Rose in. As should be evident, I am a firm believer that your transgressions shouldn't hold you back forever. I'd also consider writing in Palmeiro, but I think Rose is more deserving.

Not yet, but close...largely because you only get 10 names on your ballot: (in order)
Mike Piazza
Tim Raines
Sammy Sosa
Jeff Bagwell
Gary Sheffield
Alan Trammell
Edgar Martinez
Rafael Palmeiro

I think what will need to happen eventually is that the HOF will have to have a "steroid era committee" sort through all the players from that era. The BBWAA are not going to put them in. The problem is, we can guess as to who was on steroids (and we know others), but there isn't definitive proof on many of the players. As a result, I pretty much assume that the majority of players were on something during that time period, and we should vote in the juicers that were so much better than everyone else. That being said, I completely understand if people wanted to leave them out entirely.

My problem with the whole "he was a Hall of Famer before he started using" argument is that Pete Rose was absolutely a HoF player before he got busted (as a manager). The steroid guys like Clemens, Bonds and A-Roid can go in the year after they induct Rose.

Re: MLB 2014: I paid the $20 mil posting fee for the right to start this thread

Pedro, Smoltz, Johnson, Biggio would be my minimum vote. After that Piazza would be next in.

Rose gets in after he's dead. The lIfetime ban should end at death. Ditto for the steroid crew.

And nobody can ever take that away from him, but he was just pretty good over the course of that whole season.

The lifetime ban should extend to everyone in baseball media during those years because EVERYBODY knew. None of them should be permitted a ballot.

I completely agree about Rose. That's why I would write him in.
