Re: MLB 2014: I paid the $20 mil posting fee for the right to start this thread

Dr. Andrews has released a statement regarding the "epidemic" of Tommy Johns surgeries lately.
http://www.asmi.org/research.php?page=research&section=TJpositionstatement

Key summary from that:
- Flat-ground throwing drills and bullpen sessions should not always be at maximum effort. Reduced effort will allow for physical fitness and technique without adding undue stress to the UCL.
- Be wary of pitching in winter league baseball. The UCL and body need time to recover and build strength, so the concept of annual periodization should include adequate rest from full-effort pitching.
- Exercise, rest, and nutrition are vital for a pitcher’s health. Performance-Enhancing Drugs (PEDs) may enable the athlete to achieve disproportionately strong muscles that overwhelm the UCL and lead to injury.
- Pitchers with high ball velocity are at increased risk of injury. The higher the ball velocity, the more important to follow the guidelines above.

Also noted was that this "epidemic" is similar to the outbreak of Tommy Johns issues that teens had in the early 2000's. Which makes complete sense because those kids are now 12 years older and having the same issues.

What percentage of this epidemic is from the Twins organization?

Re: MLB 2014: I paid the $20 mil posting fee for the right to start this thread

I wonder if pitchers are not being taught to pitch with their legs and are generating all their power from their arm action. I grew up watching the Met's pitching staff in the late 60's to mid 70's. All drop and drive and no arm troubles.

Yankees big bucks signee Brien Taylor. Arm pitcher. Did not last long.

Re: MLB 2014: I paid the $20 mil posting fee for the right to start this thread

Brien Taylor was a knucklehead that got into a brawl after his first professional season. He got thrown down in his shoulder and was never right again.

I wonder if we're at the limit of how hard a human body can throw a baseball before something breaks. I mean, at this rate, in 20 years we're going to be seeing guys throwing 110-115 mph.

Seems fitting that the winning run in tonight's Red Sox-Tampa Bay game was scored by a Red Sox player that was hit by a pitch. I cannot understand how David Price was allowed to pitch after hitting a second batter.

Jack Morris had an interesting theory on the increased arm injuries. He thought that it may be due to the fact that with pitch counts, pitchers go harder, knowing exactly how much they are going to throw. Before pitch counts they would pace themselves, preparing to go a full 9 innings.

And almost hitting bogey inbetween them two

I remember a Dodgers scout saying something interesting after they signed a Gopher pitcher. "We like getting these Minnesota boys. They didn't throw all year round growing up."

That seems to be the big key. A lot of kids think they need to be pitching year round: Winter ball, spring tournaments, the usual summer league, etc. They're not taking any time off to let the throwing arm heal.

Next up, the announcement that the Cubs will be moving 100% of their broadcasts to Comcast Sportsnet Chicago, or creating their own cable channel.

They're already gone from WGN America after this year, but that is more to do with the rules in broadcasting sports on the channel since it's no longer a "superstation."

Don Zimmer has died. He was 83.

What do you mean by this?

I'm guessing that since WGN was pretty much on all the cable systems (like TBS was) despite it being a "local" channel, it got around the local blackout rules or something.

Kind of.

http://chicagoradioandmedia.com/news/6580-report-wgn-america-to-drop-cubs-chicago-sports-programming
However, WGN America is the last remaining nationally distributed superstation. In October 2007, TBS went from superstation to basic cable station after it stopped carrying sports and news content from it's Atlanta sister-station WTBS-TV (now WPCH-TV) and began airing original content.

That is what WGN America has planned, as well. The station's first-ever all-original series, "Salem" premiered this spring, while a second series, "Manhattan," will launch this summer. It has already dropped its simulcast of WGN-TV's 9:00pm newscast earlier this year and the dropping of all Chicago newscasts from mornings and middays remains a strong probability.

According to a report yesterday from Crain's Chicago Business' Lynne Marek, the move to drop all sports broadcasts is also financially motivated, as the Chicago games contribute very little in income to the station. The Crain's report points to a May 15th MoffettNathanson Media & Communications Summit in New York City where Tribune Company Peter Liguori claimed the sports broadcasts' annual revenue was a mere $250,000.
The ending of the sports broadcasts will happen at the end of this current 2014 baseball seasons. There will be no WGN America Bulls broadcasts from the 2014-2015 season which starts this fall.

This news comes as WGN-TV is close to losing its local broadcast rights for Chicago Cubs games after this current season. The baseball team has been negotiating with WGN-TV, as well as other local television station owners for the broadcast rights for the next few seasons. WGN-TV's ability to offer national exposure to the Cubs via WGN America was part of its selling point. The loss of the WGN America simulcasts surely hurts WGN-TV's negotiations, making offers by other suitors that include higher revenue and possible partnering on a Cubs-owned cable network much more attractive.

As previously mentioned HERE in January, the most likely location for the Chicago Cubs broadcasts from the 2015-2019 seasons will be on the local FOX-owned stations WFLD-TV and WPWR-TV, and not on WGN-TV. An official announcement is expected this summer.

WGN (and TBS) were able to broadcast local sports even with their superstation status. The NHL changed the rules during one of the last rounds of television deals, prohibiting the broadcast of NHL games on any superstation (because that makes the Blackhawks a "national" feed). And once they drop the superstation status (like what TBS did), they cannot air sports since they're now a national channel and not just a local channel available everywhere.

The irony is that the Canadian cable providers broadcast the WGN Chicago feed (including Blackhawks games) nationally on their systems.

Tommy Lasorda looks and acts all of the 86 years old that he is. The years are showing.

Re: MLB 2014: I paid the $20 mil posting fee for the right to start this thread

Well, that's unfortunate about the Cubs and WGN. I know my dad and his dad had many memories of watching the Cubs (and Braves on TBS), and it's always nice to turn on a game every once in awhile. I'm sure in another 10-15 years every team will have their own YES or SportsnetLA channel.

Are the Padres stupid?
What possible gain could there be in drafting Manziel?

Where they picked him was low enough to not mean anything, and hey, free PR.

PR for what though?
For me it looks like they are just being dumb and wasting a pick, doesn't seem like good PR to look inept.
