PR for what though?
For me it looks like they are just being dumb and wasting a pick, doesn't seem like good PR to look inept.

That will be one of the 3 stories on ESPN though, for the next week. Padres this, Padres that. Can they get Johnny to sign, be the next Bo Jackson, etc?

If anyone actually thinks the Padres have a shot to sign him when he never played college ball, they are dumber than a box of hammers.

Teams waste picks all the time drafting other sport players or sometimes paralyzed players. In most events it's so people will talk about them. Like you just have. So it's working.

I get that.
My point is, what good does it do to have people talking about them for drafting Manziel?
Are people really going to think better of them for it?
Again, for me they look stupid for doing it when there is ZERO shot he'll play for them and it's not a "feel good" type story.
It just makes no sense for me.

A few more merchandise sales, I guess.

Is that any different than drafting the GM's grandson's friends brother?

This happens all the time. There are probably about a dozen or two players in the NFL whose rights are owned by some team in the MLB.

There are about infinity-1 rounds in the MLB draft. Might as well in case he decides he doesn't want to play football for whatever reason.

The Devils drafted Marty Brodeur's kid in last year's 7th (and last) round.

The most amazing stat to come from last night:

Vin Scully called his 19th no-hitter.

107 pitches. 15 strikeouts.

Good grief.

I wonder if anyone has been present for more no hitters or perfect games. Of those 19, quite a few are perfectos. Koufax, Browning, El Presidente, Larson. But then again I think Walter Johnson had just been called up when Scully first took to the broadcast booth. :D

Speaking of Vin, take the time to read this excellent article: <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/longform/2014/6/2/5764256/vin-scully-career-retrospective-dodgers-broadcaster-profile">'We’ve been friends long enough you’ll understand'</a>

Mine were $605 for a pair back in 2005, for Futures Game, Home Run Derby and ASG combined.
