Re: MLB 2013 - This Bud's for you!

didn't cashman threaten to leave the yankees years ago or at least have a big disagreement on how things should be done? he wanted to run things his way by building up the farm system, etc. well, this ridiculous spending spree is proof that their farm system simply isn't very good. everything i've read about their farm system is not positive.

They have some decent prospects, but overall, it is generally average, at best. And the decent prospects they have (a few catchers, an OF, and a pitcher), they have now signed people who are essentially blocking their coming up to the big club. And those signings are also giving away critical draft picks as compensation. Hard to build a farm team when they keep doing this.

Re: MLB 2013 - This Bud's for you!

Mike Napoli returns to the Sox at 2x16. He had more money elsewhere but wanted to come back. Can you imagine? A player turns down money to play ball? And not a single word about being "disrespected" because a team "only" ponied up $16m / season. How refreshing.

Re: MLB 2013 - This Bud's for you!

Yankees sign Beltran for 3 years, per Feinsand. Somebody in the outfield is getting traded, or Soriano is playing 2nd.

So basically they keep getting older. Interesting. I like Beltran as a player (he was the one Cardinal I feared coming up to bat in a key situation during the WS) but he's like 37 years old isn't he? Not that he's not a good player and all that, but that's yet another guy (Jeter, A-Rod, Soriano, Ichiro, now Beltran) signed for a few years who is 37 or older.

With the Cards and the Sox last year, the only players on the field that were that age on either team (excluding pitchers) were Beltran who's now a Yankee and Ortiz IIRC.

Hall of Fame inductees from expansion era committee.

Bobby Cox
Tony LaRussa
Joe Torre

These 3 were unanimous.

Interesting how that worked out. He ends up with the same contract we originally was going to sign, but a few million more a year. So the Red Sox got what they wanted -- mitigating their risk, and Napoli got what he deserved -- took the risk, stayed healthy and productive, and gets rewarded for it.

Roy Halladay announced his retirement.

The starter I feared more than any other. Best wishes in retirement, and congratulations on a great career. If he had pitched most of his career for the Red Sox or the Yankees and not for another team in their division, he'd have accumulated several 20 game win seasons by now. Never heard him complain about it, either.

Surprised by the Halladay news. Didn't even know he was considering it.

Re: MLB 2013 - This Bud's for you!

Good idea in theory, but I want to see the implementation.

If the catcher has the ball, it looks like you're out no matter what you're doing. But if the catcher does not have the ball, will he be allowed to block the plate??

This is where things get interesting... At lower levels, "Malicious Contact" has never been allowed, so the rules regarding blocking a base have been adjusted... Basically, you must be in possession of the ball before blocking access to the base... MLB allows a fielder who is about to receive a thrown ball the ability to take a position denying access to the base as long as the ball is heading to him, the ball in the area, and the players position allows him to receive the ball...

By taking away contact initiated by the runner, they put the offense at a significant disadvantage... It allows the fielder to leagally take up position before an out can be made... It will be interesting to see if MLB shifts closer to the rest of the baseball world here...

My son's league years ago had a "must slide rule" on any close play. All well and good but we had an umpire that interpreted it strictly. So the catcher had the ball on the baseline properly blocking the plate and the runner ran right around him and scored. But, because he did not slide, the umpire called him out.

After the game, we had a chat about the play. I asked him how the runner could score if he could not run around the catcher.

Silence. I think he figured it out that he couldn't.

Pretty easy: you must slide if there is a play at the plate. It's worked in softball for years. Cut and dry.

Re: MLB 2013 - This Bud's for you!

Big moves by the Twins!
The Twins signed the outfielder (Jason Kubel) to a Minor League deal with an invite to Major League Spring Training, the club announced Friday.

Re: MLB 2013 - This Bud's for you!

Kubel hit 30 homers all of two years ago. It doesn't seem entirely implausible that he could return to being a league-average hitter in 2014, and even if all he is is a lefty bench bat or organizational depth, at the cost of a minor league contract there isn't really any down side. If it were the Mets, I would be happy with it as a low-risk, potentially medium-reward move.

Re: MLB 2013 - This Bud's for you!

Sweet! I was thinking to myself the other day that the Twins don't have enough slow, hulking, white corner outfielders.
