MLB 2011 Post-Season: Who misses the NBA?

Re: MLB 2011 Post-Season: Who misses the NBA?

Counterpoint: Hitters now have the Hank Aaron Award, so the MVP should be available to anyone.
The real counterpoint was already mentioned. There should just be the Hitter, Pitcher, Reliever awards and no separate MVP.

Reliever award because much like Pitchers winning MVP, I have trouble with closers (lets be honest, long relief isn't winning these) winning Cy Young.

Would a separate Most Valuable Pitcher award be appropriate? The Cy could be awarded to the most outstanding pitcher, so someone who had a great season on a bottom dweller or a powerhouse could still have their day in the sun. Think of Greinke tearing it up during that stinker season the Royals had.

I feel somewhat stupid now finding out for sure there IS a Hank Aaron award. But it does illustrate my point about the lack of promotion. But I do still think separate awards for hitters and pitchers is appropriate, with an overall MVP given to whoever is deemed to be the "most valuable."

Re: MLB 2011 Post-Season: Who misses the NBA?

Interesting point from, of all places, the Yahoo Sports comments.

Position players have 4-5 plate appearances a game. Multiply that by 162 games and you're looking at 600-700 plate appearances with which to benefit your team. Justin Verlander only plays every couple games, but is involved in every plate appearance in those games until he's relieved, which would mean he has as many if not more chances to help his team.

Of course, then you could argue the position players play defense every night, while JV only plays it every fourth or fifth night.

Re: MLB 2011 Post-Season: Who misses the NBA?

Justin verlander was involved in over 1000 plate appearances. Whats the most number of plate appearances that ANY hitter is involved in? Ichiro had around 700 PAs how many defensive plays was he involved in? I don't have time to do the research here at this bar in the middle of nowhere wisconsin at deer camp.

Re: MLB 2011 Post-Season: Who misses the NBA?

Ichiro had 721 PAs and 274 defensive chances, per Baseball Reference, for a total of 995.
Ellsbury was somewhere in the neighborhood of 1100 total.
Bautista had 655 PAs and 252 chances for a total of 907.

Verlander faced 969 batters this season. He struck out 250 of them.

Not to mention complete games and consistently going deep into games DOES impact more than just 1 of every 5 games.

Re: MLB 2011 Post-Season: Who misses the NBA?

Yep. Also, if Ellsbury and Verlander were to swap teams, Boston is likely getting fitted for championship rings right about now.

Don't get me wrong, folks. Ellsbury (and you can substitute Bautista here) had a wonderful season, but this was Verlander's year.

I think I just saw Joe Nathan to the Rangers on a 2-year deal on ESPN's ticker. Neftali Feliz is expected to move to the rotation.

Re: MLB 2011 Post-Season: Who misses the NBA?

I have no issue with a pitcher winning the MVP. I think the bar is (and perhaps rightly so) set much higher for a pitcher. It's a true testament to how good he was this year.

Kepler in mourning? Reyes to Marlins 6 years $106 million.

Re: MLB 2011 Post-Season: Who misses the NBA?

Ron Santo finally makes it into the Hall of Fame, one year too late.

Re: MLB 2011 Post-Season: Who misses the NBA?

Two years overdue. At least. He passed about a year ago, so he wouldn't have been able to enjoy the induction had it come last year.

Re: MLB 2011 Post-Season: Who misses the NBA?

The Baseball Hall of Fame has finally corrected one of its most egregious oversights: Chicago Cubs 3rd baseman Ron Santo has been voted in. In what has to be the very definition of bittersweet, Santo's election comes just over a year after his death. Baseball statistical guru Bill James ranks Santo the 6th best 3rd baseman of all time, ahead of others who are already in the Hall. I'm paraphrasing, but James has said, Santo not being in the Hall of Fame is like a zoo with puppies and kittens on display, while lions and tigers roam the streets. 5 consecutive gold gloves, 9 All-Star games, and captain of those great Cubs teams of the late 60's and early 70's. All of this while battling juvenile diabetes (at a time when meters, pumps and effective medications were only a dream) that eventually took both of his legs. This is an honor well earned and long overdue. Like tens of thousands of Cubs fans, I shed tears this morning when I learned of his election. Tears of pride that his excellence has finally been recognized. And tears of sadness that Ronnie isn't around to celebrate the honor.
