MLB 2011 Post-Season: Who misses the NBA?

Re: MLB 2011 Post-Season: Who misses the NBA?

That game was an absolute joke. Some of the worst baseball I have ever seen played. Sure it made for drama, but i'd rather see quality play.

Neither team deserves to win this series the way their defense has played.

I was only listening to the game, but I almost have to agree with you about the defense. So many errors and missed plays...the Cardinals had their fair share of screw-ups yesterday. When Texas went up by two (both times) I almost thought we deserved it after our sloppy defensive play throughout a lot of the series. I figured they just wanted it more--I couldn't be more glad I was wrong!:D

Re: MLB 2011 Post-Season: Who misses the NBA?

Everyone at Busch wanted the Cardinals to win, including the Rangers. Ugly game, but entertaining. Don't blow it tonight, Texas. Nolan Ryan is going to strangle each of you with his bare hands if that happens. AND SO WILL I.

Re: MLB 2011 Post-Season: Who misses the NBA?

Except he's never been anywhere close to his father and he uttered this statement with no soul whatsoever. Joe Buck is an automoton that has no business being in his position. I'd sooner listen to Tim McCarver talk about the 1991 Braves for 3 straight days than listen to Buck read the specials from Red Lobster.

What does "never been anywhere close to his father" even mean? It was a tribute to him. Your point about him being an automoton is a completely different argument.

Rumors that Napoli (ankle) and Cruz (pride?) may not play tonight due to injury.

That would certainly hurt the Rangers chances of winning.

I'd like to see Carpenter go on 3 days for the Cards. He wasn't good previously in that situation.

The rainout, last night...don't like the looks of this for Texas. Would really like to see them win. Anyway, if Cruz/Napoli were healthy enough to finish the game last night, no shot they don't play tonight IMO.

Cruz didn't finish the game last night and Napoli's ankle is probably all swollen now that he's taken his cleats off...not sure about him.

Re: MLB 2011 Post-Season: Who misses the NBA?

If Joe Buck was a rookie hack, I'd forgive his ripoff line. But he's not. He SHOULD be good/veteran enough to create his own line for that moment. He didn't. *ing worthless announcer. If there was any hope for him, it was lost last night.

I sort of agree except, it was his dad that said it, it was the anniversary of his dad's call. I can really see both sides here. I did not like it when he did it but it seemed to me after thinking about it that it was more of a moment for Joe to give a nod to his dad than not come up with his own thing.

I get the dad bit, but now he's just "daddy's boy," and not his own man, with his "homage." He blew a chance to create a legendary call for a wild game.

Joe Buck already called the end of the Red Sox "curse" and might still have a chance tonight to leave his own mark on this series. I don't have a problem with what he did. Thought it was kinda cool actually.

Certainly could have been a chance to really come up with a classic line- something like Do You Believe in Miracles?. What he did makes a lot of sense as a tribute but I agree, he missed a big chance to create his own memorable tagline.

Re: MLB 2011 Post-Season: Who misses the NBA?

I remember him doing the line in the 2004 ALCS, except he said "We'll see you later tonight" because Papi's homer came at one in the morning.

I don't have a problem with Joe Buck as a baseball announcer. His insight that Pujols called his own hit-and-run (which failed miserably, much to TLR's disgust) was excellent. I think the line was a nice tribute to his father. He will never be a legend like his father and IMHO, he isn't trying. But to have a chance to pay tribute to his dad with a home run call in the World Series...who among us wouldn't jump at that chance?

This reminds me of the old radio industry expression, "the DJ makes the music." I don't agree at all. Sportscasting and sportswriting are both places where Less is More is brutally obvious. I want these people to be like refs -- I don't want to notice them, I want to concentrate on the actual game.

The ideal call of a walk-off homerun is complete silence.

Gus Johnson disagrees.

Speaking hopefully here as one who want to see the Rangers win, but I don't know about starting Carpenter. He wasn't so hot on three days rest against the Phils. He may have settled down but once the Cards scored a few runs and got right back into that one, TLR went to the 'pen. After pitching 7 innings Monday, he had to figure his season was over, and only the rainout on Wednesday even gave him the chance to pitch again. Starters are such creatures of routine -- and his routine was never to pitch on 3 days rest -- I wonder about the move. But if he manages to make it through the lineup once without getting hammered, I like the Cards chances.

I just can't believe that the Rangers can be in the right frame of mind to deal with the shocking way they lost last night. Historical defeat. Jayson Stark on ESPN.com wrote, among other nuggets, that it was "the first World Series game in history in which a team got down to its final strike, its final breath, twice -- once in the ninth inning, once in the 10th inning -- and somehow won," and also "the first World Series game ever in which a team found itself losing in the ninth inning and extra innings -- yet still found a way to win." Like I said, historic.

I was so shocked that at game's end I didn't even realize that Buck parroted his father. I actually like how he referenced Ortiz' winner in 2004, good touch on a classic, and I am not a Joe Buck fan, although I did like his dad's coverage on CBS. In his defense it isn't wise probably for an announcer to sit there wondering during the course of a game what classic phrase he should utter in the suddenness of the moment. I'll give him a pass on the plagiarism.

I think Scully was silent for nearly a full minute following Gibson's walkoff in '88. Rumor has always been if you listen closely enough, you can hear Scully applauding very briefly in the press box, perhaps two or three hand slaps. People often complain when a "home team" announcer calls playoff games, but I never saw it with Scully. Tommy Heinsohn used to be raked over the coals by Laker fans in the 80s since he was so closely tied to the Celts and calling games, I believe 2 NBA Finals between LA and Boston included, but I never saw a problem, and when the NBA mattered to me I was a rather huge Lakers fan.

MLB Network is replaying Game 6...bottom of the 7th now.

Re: MLB 2011 Post-Season: Who misses the NBA?

Cruz didn't finish the game last night and Napoli's ankle is probably all swollen now that he's taken his cleats off...not sure about him.
And both will start:
Rangers lineup: Kinsler 2b, Andrus ss, Hamilton cf, Young 1b, Beltre 3b, Cruz rf, Napoli c, Murphy lf, Harrison p

Re: MLB 2011 Post-Season: Who misses the NBA?

So tonight my wife and daughter are going out on a girls' night out kind of thing. That leaves me and our son, and historically he's gotten to pick a movie to watch when it's just us guys at home. Today, however, when he gets home from school, he's gonna hear me say, "Guess what? I've already picked our movie for tonight! It's called, 'Game 7 Of The World Series!'" :D

Re: MLB 2011 Post-Season: Who misses the NBA?

I thought the No Doubles Defense in the 10th was disgusting. I turned to my friend and said that was a Prevent Defense type of play. Not trying to win, but trying not to lose. Awful, gutless.

Not saying regular depth would have mattered, but it might have made a play at the plate.

Playing to prevent doubles with two outs and the tying run on first is ABSOLUTELY the right defense. All Cruz has to do is either catch the ball or get enough of the ball so the runner from first couldn't score. What he did out there simply means Texas has their own Buckner fan club to begin.

Re: MLB 2011 Post-Season: Who misses the NBA?

I would have found it acceptable if he had prefaced it with, "In the immortal words of my father..."

Otherwise, fist yourself Joe Buck.
