MLB 2011 Part 1

Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

MLB and ESPN really blew it tonight.

Mets to wear regular uniform hats for Sept. 11 game

Well, yes. Reportedly, so much that the team had to buckle.

Meanwhile, ESPN didn't want to miss its chance to play Scrooge...

This isn't rocket science, folks.
This is when silly rules get in the way of a respectful way to honor a 10 year anniversary of something this tragic.
Very bad decision by MLB and ESPN.

Saw this on Twitter: PLEASE! CALL THE MLB OFFICE IN MANHATTAN & LEAVE A MESSAGE AND TELL THEM THEY R DISGUSTING, DESPICABLE PILES OF POND SCUMS (212) 931-7800

Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

I would like to hear MLB's and ESPN's explanations. I would like to know how this is better PR than to let them do it. I can't believe this can be about money.

NEW YORK — Major League Baseball denied the New York Mets' request to wear baseball caps Sunday night honoring New York emergency service departments for their game against the Chicago Cubs on the 10th anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attacks.

Joe Torre, MLB's executive vice president for baseball operations, told The Associated Press in a phone interview the decision was made to keep policy consistent throughout baseball.

"Certainly it's not a lack of respect," Torre said. "We just felt all the major leagues are honoring the same way with the American flag on the uniform and the cap. This is a unanimity thing."

The Mets wanted to wear caps honoring police, firefighters and other first responders like the ones they wore on Sept. 21, 2001, in the first professional sporting event in New York after the World Trade Center collapsed 10 days earlier. They spoke with Torre on several occasions over the course of the last month.

However...

Torre also said there was recent precedence for the policy. The Washington Nationals wanted to wear caps honoring the Navy SEALs that were killed in Afghanistan in early August and the team was allowed to wear them before the game.

The Mets said in a statement Sunday they followed the guidelines set in a league-wide memo issued by MLB for games played on Sept 11.

It's not like this is an off-the-wall request. Neither was the request from the Nationals. Just a terrible decision.

If they made an exception for the Nationals, they can certainly make an exception for the Mets. It's not like this is an off-the-wall request. Just a terrible decision.

Before the game. Key words.

The Mets, from what I understand, wore the caps before the game, but not during.

Yeah, I edited what I said. You look at how the NFL did tributes and then read about this garbage? Makes it clearer why the NFL has surpassed MLB as America's past time.

I agree it's a bad decision. At least they are consistent.

The NFL surpassed MLB due to TV. MLB is the prefect radio sport. The NFL is made for TV.

Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

The NFL has said no to tributes with clothing recently as well, so lets not praise them as some kind of benevolent organization.

Yeah, they said no to Peyton Manning wearing Johnny Unitas' hightops...they didn't tell Rex Ryan to take off the NYFD hat on 9/11.

Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

Inconsistent application of rules is inconsistent.

Rules are meant to be broken. This was absolutely one of those times.

I have to agree with Dan Patrick on this one. I would have worn the hats then dared MLB to fine me. That public relations fight would have been really fun to watch. No way MLB follows through.

They'd have to, it's a contract with the apparel company. There's no clause in the contract that says, "on the other hand, if there's a really good emotional reason you can choose to void this at will with no ramifications." And then if the apparel company doesn't follow through their own shareholders can get on them, etc, etc...

Having said which, the players could have "individually" broken the rule, just as they did back in 2001, told the team and the league to pound sand, and then paid whatever fine. Just because corporations are obligated to act as profit-seeking sociopaths doesn't mean human beings are. They are fictions that exist to serve us, not the other way around.

Oh and Dan Patrick can either offer to pay the fines or shut up. Nothing like tub thumping grandstanding from a guy who worked for 17 years for the Ultimate Force of Evil.

It wasn't the ultimate force of evil for all 17 years and get got the hell out because it was BS. Dan Patrick is paid to make comments like that. I agree with what he said, but its alot easier for us to say, do and dare them then actually be the guy like Bobby Parnell, Josh Thole, or Lucas Duda making less than $500k this year to dare MLB to fine them (I have no idea how much the fine would be). There is also no reason a guy like Jason Bay or David Wright couldn't have offered to pay everyone's fines out of their $10+ mil salary.

Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

I guess this is really MLB 2012, but a lot of teams released schedules today.

Opening Day in Tampa vs. the Yankees is on the off day for Frozen Four (April 6), yet again (third year in a row this has happened). cc to Scarlet - let's go!!!

Miami opens their new stadium on April 4 with the first game of the season.

And the effing Brewers are STILL not going to Seattle.

It's in the four letter network's contract to screw hockey at every chance. :D

Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

I found this interesting.

SI Players Poll: Baseball's Meanest Players. Some of these are obvious, but some are a little surprising. I guess the definition of "mean" was left up to the players.

It's in annoying "gallery" form, so I'll spare you.

1. AJ Pierzynski
2. Chase Utley
3. Milton Bradley
4. Carlos Zambrano
5. Vicente Padilla
6. Alex Rodriguez
7. Chris Carpenter
8. Albert Pujols
9. Nyjer Morgan (please note who is ranked above him :D)
10. Kevin Youkilis
11. Josh Beckett
12. Kyle Farnsworth
13. Prince Fielder (that is a REALLY old picture)
14. Jason Kendall
15. Mark Teixeira

I believe a few weeks ago, Prince Fielder was also listed as one of MLB's "Friendliest Players" in an SI Players Poll, so take it however you want.

It's in the four letter network's contract to screw hockey at every chance. :D

Having Opening Day on the off day is a GOOD thing, because it means FF fans can go to the game.

Exactly. I think MLB (or the NCAA) do this on purpose, due to extra crowds in town. This is what, the 3rd year straight now?

Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

Might as well post this on USCHO as well.

Verlander has now won 12 straight starts. That's not the important part. The important part is that only two other pitchers have done that in the last 40 years. Johan Santana in 2004 and Brad Radke in 1997.

It is a miracle that Radke pulled off what he did with the complete horse**** team the Twins had in '97.
