Misc. Published Media Women's Hockey News

Re: Misc. Published Media Women's Hockey News

I'm hoping they go with Soy Beans for a Midwest team.

I hope they are better at running the league than they were at picking names.

Re: Misc. Published Media Women's Hockey News

I'd love any heartland team that could avoid a clichéd, sexist, predictable or just plain nonsensical (Riveters?) moniker. Let's go Wheat!

Riveters. As in "Rosie the"

If St. Paul gets a team they should go with Saints just for the historical value
Muskie would be good here also
Blades would be good anywhere
If you simply insist on inanimate objects how about Breeze so the could be labeled Breezers?

Not sure about the love for the shots on goal stat. Connecticut's draft is questioned about going defense heavy when that formula has proven to be successful for Minnesota. Seriously, who had a better trio of shutdown defenders last year than Minnestoa, with Ramsey, McMillen, and Stecklein?

Yeah, they probably could have been successful if only someone on the team could score.

Between that focus and a comment early on, the author is clearly trying to look at it from an advanced analytical perspective, and shots form the basis of most of the advanced stats. The problem is that a full description of the stat used is: the percentage of the attempted shots taken while a player is on the ice at even strength that are taken by his/her team. But, as the author says, we just don't have those numbers.

The whole piece suffers from the problem that you have teams that had zero players on their roster drafting a total of five rounds. It's impossible to get any sense of what the teams are going to be like once they have a chance to sign free agents. Other than if a team had drafted multiple goalies, there's no such thing as a lopsided draft in this situation. Even drafting five defensemen would have been perfectly defensible if you could make the case that they were the five best players available when the pick came up.

So you're saying if they had a top line center who was good in the faceoff circle, could score by the bucketful, and was good at backchecking to go along with that shutdown defense, they might have a strung together some championships by now?

Yeah, Connecticut could use a player like that as well.
