Misc. Published Media Women's Hockey News

Re: Misc. Published Media Women's Hockey News

Both the team logos themselves and the “keywords” intended to inspire graphic magic to make the jerseys look as dynamic as the projected league itself are just lame. How about simple images of (1) Abigail Adams, to restore what looks like the splintered pride of Boston, (2) MM, to give some content to a bit of archaic slang, and (3) Ahab's wife, to counter the silliness of an angry blue (!) whale? Otherwise these teams have already lost this cutting-edge marketing game to a muscle-bound 20th century factory worker. Surely one of the legion of artists who follow the women’s game can step up to redeem the NWHL’s first, woeful foray into graphic design.

Off-topic, but perfectly delightful off-season diversion to celebrate the USWNT win in Vancouver. Another women's game that highlights discipline and inventiveness as the key to success. Not coincidental that so many of our exciting players excelled in this (co-) ultimate team sport!

Can't help but think that, going forward the league will need a significant number of signings by higher profile players in subsequent drafts...and "free agency" so to speak, of former players...to have much of a chance at building the fanbase to sustain operations.

Has the question been answered yet of "who's paying the players?

"But the real showstarter will be between Boston and New York in Aviator Sports & Events Center in Brooklyn, October 18 at 7:00 PM. These two franchises are stealing the spotlight most frequently (and NYR is likely to do so again this Thursday at the international camp, where Nana Fujimoto, goaltender for the Japanese women’s hockey team will be in attendance. NYR has not yet signed a goaltender, and is the only NWHL team to lack one) and their matchup should set the tone for the season."

Tell me the league doesn't need to get a new PR person, or maybe it's all tongue-in-cheek? (Get your Buffalo hotel rooms now!) And which spotlight, pray tell, is it that is being most frequently stolen? Though I'll certainly grant that a new and exciting tone will be set in October with 60 minutes of an empty net at the NYR end, others are not likely to implement that strategy. And the Boston locals will be glad to discover whatever it is that is going on with this venture here at Bright-Landry rather than in Everett. But . . . is this for real?

For a good look at the "cons" check this out:

Sorry, link may not work, but John Powers has a good article if you go to "Today's Globe" then "Sports" on the Boston Globe website (and keep scrolling).
(Actually, the PAGE NOT FOUND will take you to it, under Sports. "Paying stipends . . . divisive.")

Re: Misc. Published Media Women's Hockey News

I first noticed this on ESPN's crawl. Strangely, the network only cares about women's college hockey when there is a hint of scandal, and for its ideal purpose, the scandal should involve sexual impropriety.

Agree with your comment. It's a shame that women's hockey only gets this type of media attention.

Two quotes from the article:

According to the lawsuit, in 2014 MacKenzie allegedly told Godin's parents, shortly after he got the coaching job, that “he did not recruit Shannon, did not like her as a player, that she would hate UConn and be gone in a year.”

She said when she asked the coach how she could improve, he allegedly said “Didn’t I tell you that you would hate coming to the rink.”

If you've ever talked with this coach you could definitely hear him saying these sort of things. He's a very arrogant guy just like his buddies the Handrahan brothers. The younger brother is one of his current assistant coaches at UConn and the older brother was very unceremoniously removed from his head women's hockey coaching position at Ohio State. That being said I doubt the coach knew fully what was going on away from the rink. Most colleges have a zero tolerance policy in place regarding hazing among other things so coaches these days don't tolerate hazing if they find out about it because they could lose their jobs over it. I don't think this will go very far unless other rookies from last season come forward to support her claims.
