Minnesotans arguing about the weather...

Re: Minnesotans arguing about the weather...

I love snow, but I think I love not having to plow my driveway even more. So far, so good this year.

Re: Minnesotans arguing about the weather...

I'm not plowing this bull****.

The roads I took in this morning, up by my place were simply impassible by anything but a truck. Even an all wheel drive car wouldn't make it, because they would get hung up on that wet, sticky snow and just sit there. Obviously it was better once I got to bigger roads, but I avoided any kind of major road. I know what 65 is like on days like today, it would have taken 2 hours to get to work going that route, so I took the backroads down to Bunker, got over to Hanson, which wasn't bad. I went over 10, which was a parking lot, and took Coon Rapids Blvd to University which was surprisingly not that bad. Got to work in 20 minutes longer than normal, which was pretty **** good for a day like this.

My boss canceled all of our group's meetings and told me to stay home and not even try to come in today. All of our group is working from home today. :D

I would have worked from home, but I don't have internet at home. And I have a vehicle designed to deal with this kind of ****, may as well use it.

Yeah, when I finally get a truck it's going to be a lot harder to convince my boss I couldn't make it into work... :)

I just watched a school bus struggle to make it past my house. :D :D :D :D

Re: Minnesotans arguing about the weather...

Sustained winds of 41MPH coming off the lake. I can't even tell if more snow is actually falling or if this is just what has already fallen blowing around.

Around here, the stuff that has already fallen is so wet and heavy that once it hits the ground, its not blowing anywhere.

Man the on-line traffic map sucked real hard. Said everything was open and flowing 65 all over before I left my house at 9:15. Try 25-45 with patches of packed ice. I probably would have taken a different route had I known.

The radio this morning basically said "traffic is bad on every road, it will take at least 45 minutes extra to get to work for just about everyone today". They said that it was taking 45 minutes to get from Silver Lake Road to Hwy100 on 694 this morning, that is beyond insane. Backroads, FTW.

Normally if it snows/sleets/rains I head in early and beat the worst of the rush. Today I was planning a half-day anyway and my kid's school was delayed 2 hours so I took him in at about 9:35 then continued to my office. I figured it would have been cleared up by then and I checked the web site before leaving the house. All wrong.

Re: Minnesotans arguing about the weather...

We didn't get snow in my neck of the woods (Southern Illinois). The worst of it passed just a few miles south of Carbondale where I currently live. A friend of mine was without power for 6 hrs or so and has debris in her yard and a few animal enclosures that got damaged. The same cell that pass through there is the one that spawned the suspected tornado that leveled part of Harrisburg, IL just to the east of Carbondale. 6 peple are dead and over 100 have been wounded. There may still be some missing too.

Im having some issues uploading pics so here is a link to a gallery of pics from the area:

Edit: 6 dead in Harrisburg now with a few of them being children and possibly still a few people missing. State of emergency has been declared and the National Guard is on their way. Something like 25-30 homes are wiped out and many more damaged. The hospital in Harrisburg has taken some damage as well when part of an outside wall collapsed exposing a few patient rooms and an office or two, but apparently no one was injured there.

Walked about a mile into work today, through 45 mph winds and 3 foot drifts. Rather enjoyable.

Re: Minnesotans arguing about the weather...

Update in Harrisburg, IL. Just saw that winds topped 170 mph there. This cell passed probably 5 miles south of where I live but only had rotation at the time and had not yet spawned a funnel cloud.
