Minnesotans arguing about the weather...

Re: Minnesotans arguing about the weather...

I did my driveway and walk this morning. Our street had a onceover quickie pass last night some time during the snowfall it looks like. Otherwise I probably wouldn't have gotten to work either. I'll have to remove whatever the plow puts in the my driveway today.
I just drive through it. I could drive through 2 feet or more, if I wanted to. But I did need 4x4 this morning.

Re: Minnesotans arguing about the weather...

I have a car. I can't afford the All Wheel or 4x4 for both cars. My wife has the SUV.
Well, she's the important one, so it is probably better that way. :p

My other 4X4 is sitting in the machine shed at home. Though, it wouldn't be much use right now, it would be a bit chilly driving a Jeep without its top.

Re: Minnesotans arguing about the weather...

My car will be fine with snows on it. Saving some money and picking those up this summer. I'm not going to freak out and think it is essential to have AWD or a truck, for this is the first winter in ages where it has even been necessary once. I had a truck for six or seven years, and I can count the times I needed 4X4 on my fingers. Only twice driving on the roads, the rest were merely getting out of my parking spot.

Yeah, I need 4x4 more when I'm off-road, mostly in the fields, or deer hunting, than on the road. Most winters I barely use it, this year there have been several times when I've needed it. I also used it all the time in Houghton, which is expected.

Agreed that 4x4 is rarely needed. A little ground clearance and front wheel drive is nice though in a part of the country where there may be snow for 5 months of the year. A RWD car, with a light rear end and no ground clearance is so unusable when it snows, that I refuse to help people who get stuck in those things.

Re: Minnesotans arguing about the weather...

We must have some pretty good plows here because our street was plowed curb to curb around 10pm last night, and other then the plow line in my driveway I didn't have too much trouble getting to work. Was even a little early because traffic was lighter then usual. Weird. wonder how the drive home will be since it's starting to get a bit worse again.

Re: Minnesotans arguing about the weather...

Evidently even with the SUV my wife couldn't get into the driveway after we were plowed in. Fortunately the neighbor plowed us out.

I could see some SUV's having a problem with that. A bunch of SUV's don't have a whole lot of ground clearance, and those piles from the plow can get deep.

It should be interesting to see if the old Foreman has any trouble with this stuff. I expect no problems, since I was able to push the 26" job earlier this year. That thing is an amazing machine.

Re: Minnesotans arguing about the weather...

Our streets here in Uptown are decent, but the lot I am in has yet to be touched so it is like 14 inches of pure snow all around. I dug myself out a bit and tried to plow through (surprisingly in the 7 years I have had my Saturn it has gotten stuck twice including today) but got stuck. It took work, mainly putting the car in drive and me standing outside of it rocking it, to get it back into the spot but I did.

Rewarded myself with Irish Coffee and a meatball sub :D

Nice. aparently my snow blower is so cheap it can only handle about 4" and not in weather that is too cold. Took me 45 minues last night and didn't finish since now my driveway is about 3' narrower then before. I'm on the hunt for a new one now as this was the last straw.

You get the big snowfalls or the heavy stuff and the mini-snow blower units don't do much. I was given a pretty nice Sears Craftsman from the rents and I've had it now for 7 years or so. Used it a lot this year.

I have a Mustang and this was the first year I've ever gotten stuck. Ever.

Re: Minnesotans arguing about the weather...

I should have seen this coming from a mile away. I get in and half the people I need to talk to are gone. The other half have already left. Argh.

You've been very fortunate...and probably possess considerable driving skills. I've had several Mustangs as a certifiable Mustang nut...but I don't even attempt to drive them in a Minnesota winter. I've had the rear end come around, entirely unintended on just a rain slick road. Too much horsepower with no weight in back on strictly dry pavement summer radials.

Another inch or two after clearing my too long driveway of knee deep snow this morning...sucks.

Not a problem, he has a cute little V6. :p ;)

Re: Minnesotans arguing about the weather...

Why would anyone get a Mustang with a V6?

Often wondered the very same. Though now the 6 cylinder matches the horses of the old V8s. Still...gotta have that American V8...nothing sounds quite like it...they're music to the motorheads ears.
