Minnesotans arguing about the weather...

Re: Minnesotans arguing about the weather...

I'm having a hard time getting past the concept of a low of 95.

That 95 is still higher than Anchorage's highest recorded temperature EVER (just checked, 92.)

Usually cloudy and high 50s to mid 60s. Low 70s if it's a nice day. It's news if it breaks 80.

I like it cool, thank you very much.

Pretty sure that in every city, state and country I've visited long enough to converse with locals they talked about the weather. Not much to see here...

Re: Minnesotans arguing about the weather...

It helps because at my work, turning on the air conditioner is an option according to management.

At our workplace the A/C gets shut off when the store closes at 10pm, then supposedly gets turned on again when the early morning management shows up. Well, then, why am I drenched in sweat after the first half hour of my shift? Because it takes four hours for the A/C to kick in completely again. We keep complaining but the other day our shift manager said that was the first he'd heard of it. Now we're supposed to keep mentioning it every time we notice it. That's every day. Meanwhile, I get dehydrated just working the first half of my shift, which brings with it its own problems.

I worked in a blacksmith's shop all day today. :p Nothing like standing over a 3000 degree fire to make one appreciate even a little bit of A/C.

Re: Minnesotans arguing about the weather...

You've obviously never been to Illinois...

You beat me to it. They have, by far, the highest percentage of people who are legally insane driving. (among all states I have ever driven in).

Edit: Although I will admit the vast majority of Minnesotans have ZERO clue on how to merge. Too timid.

This is what drives me crazy. Guess where the merge point is, when the lanes merge. That other lane is still open for an effing reason, you can still use it. Then you have the jerks that want to be cops and block that lane by going slowly, and it only causes more problems. If they wanted us to merge two miles before where the merge currently is, THEY WOULD HAVE PUT IT THERE IN THE FIRST PLACE.

Idiots.

I've driven in 40 states. The insane driving ratings would be:

1. Utah
(enormous gap)
2. 39-way tie

Now, inept drivers on the other hand:

1. Southern drivers in the snow
2. Midwestern drivers in cities
3. Non-PNW drivers in the rain

I love my drive home from work. As I get closer to Lake Michigan, the cooler it gets. It helps because at my work, turning on the air conditioner is an option according to management. That is one thing I missed when I lived up in Minnesota. Mississippi River didn't do squat.

I hear you on that! My family has a cabin that is about 15 miles inland, and it can actually get quite warm out there. So, we pack up our stuff and head to the big lake. We get there, and it's 65-70 degrees if the wind is off the water, and still noticeably cooler but nice if it's not.
Then on the other end of things, during the winter it gets slightly warmer closer to the lake. :)

Re: Minnesotans arguing about the weather...

Here's a sad lesson on what happens when people ignore the weather. Three Utah guys likely dead after going into the Superstition Mountains this week in Arizona to look for the Lost Dutchman Mine. It's idiotic to go out there at all this time of year, given the extreme heat we have here. But then they refused advice to take food, water, their cell phone, etc. with them. Searchers haven't found a trace of them in the last few days of looking. It's forecast to be 114 today here, 116 Friday, and 115 Saturday. And it's been nearly that warm all week. Some mistakes are minor, this one is likely fatal.

Most inept: Colorado. Not even a contest. The speed limit on I-25 is 75. You're lucky if you're going 60. All they know how to do is crowd around trucks and form nice rolling roadblocks. And don't even start me on their habit of slamming on the brakes in the fast lane to dive across for their exit.

Most insane: Georgia had some insane ones - I was doing 85 in the left lane and still getting passed on the right. Leaving the country, Ontario drivers are pretty nuts as well.

Mom did not seem all that broken up.

That's because a lot of people here don't realize that there's a difference between "merge" and "yield."

I will admit the first time I was out there, and in the car when Quiz was driving, I kept thinking to myself "she's used to Boston, she's fine here, she's used to Boston, she's fine here" over and over. About the only way I felt safe.

CO Drivers: gun it, slam on brakes, gun it, slam on brakes, jump 4 lanes to exit, find out it's not the exit you want, jump 4 lanes back to where you were.....until the next exit.

Re: Minnesotans arguing about the weather...

This. Tell me, Minnesotans, why is it necessary to go 20 under the limit when there's drizzle on your windshield?

Same reason both lanes slow down to 40 when there's a semi pulled over on the side of the road. Note: if it's not on fire, be on your way. No need to gawk.
