Minnesotans Arguing About the Weather III: Storm's a comin'

8" per hour rainfall rate in Minneapolis proper

We're on a corner lot and have a big maple out front toward the intersection. It is about 15 feet from one street, 10 feet from the other. Water was about one foot away from it in both directions at the highest point, meaning it was getting a little too close to the house for my liking. Luckily the rain suddenly slowed and it started receding pretty quickly. Note: It is still raining pretty damn heavily here, and the drain out on this corner is having zero problems keeping up. It had to be coming down EXTREMELY heavily to flood like that.

I hope all y’all stayed safe last night. You never think a tornado is going to roll right through your house, until it does.

There was sort of an eye-catching story in the Minneapolis paper today related to the storm. Apparently some power lines over an interstate highway in the southern part of the state were knocked over by the storm. An accident ensued in which a car stopped, to avoid the lines, but was then struck by a semi. A third vehicle, another car, avoided the collision, but struck the power lines. One person was killed and some others were seriously injured. Obviously, an unfortunate situation.

But what struck me was where the people were from who were involved in this accident, and the coincidence of all of them coming together in this accident basically in the the middle of nowhere in southern Minnesota.

The woman who died was from Mexico City. A man from Annapolis, MD, was hospitalized with serious injuries. Two people from Chile were injured. The semi driver, from Ottawa, was not hurt. The person who missed the collision but hit the power lines was from Tea, SD.

An update to the story says the woman from Mexico City, the guy from Maryland, and the two Chileans were all storm chasers working together.

From last night:
My dad's neighborhood in the northern burbs lost about a dozen trees. 12-18" thick. We lost one near our city works.

coon rapids had a confirmed EF0. Find the picture from the star trib where a two foot thick tree fell on a house. YIKES
