Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016 (Part 2) -- Amanda Kessel Enhanced

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016 (Part 2) -- Amanda Kessel Enhanced

Congratulations you guys. We finally got the epic everyone wanted for years. Just wish it could have gone a little differently.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016 (Part 2) -- Amanda Kessel Enhanced

A student-athlete shall complete his or her seasons of participation within five calendar years from the beginning of the semester or quarter in which the student-athlete first registered for a minimum full-time program of studies in a collegiate institution, with time spent in the armed services, on official church missions or with recognized foreign aid services of the U.S. government being excepted. For foreign students, service in the armed forces or on an official church mission of the student's home country is considered equivalent to such service in the United States.

There's a "Red Army" joke in here somewhere...

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016 (Part 2) -- Amanda Kessel Enhanced

Not sure that the addition of Kessel was "a game changer", but it's possible. Some think that Minnesota may have beaten Wisconsin even had Kessel not come back, but its also possible that Wisconsin was better than Minnesota, before the addition of Kessel, and that is definitely a possibility.

UM was 0-2 w/o Kessel, 3-1 with against UW. They were still tight games other than the Friday flu game, but adding a top line player makes your 2nd and 3rd lines all the better with the line-up shuffle.

Thanks for beating BC and keeping the title in the West. I sure wanted UW to get a crack at BC. It's 2 days later and I'm still bummed. I know I'd feel better if ARD didn't get screwed for the Patty Katz, but that's a different thread. What a flushable weekend. I hope Frosty applies for the UW men's job. What else does he have left to prove in the women's game?

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016 (Part 2) -- Amanda Kessel Enhanced

A friend of ours called and said he heard on channel 5 news that our victorious women will be returning to Ridder arena around 10:45 this evening. I'm trying to confirm that.

He's said he has no interest in moving to the men's side and that he wants to finish his coaching career doing exactly what he's doing.

I recently read somewhere that Frosty says he already has his dream job and that he wants to retire as the Gopher women's hockey coach. I hope he gets his wish in 20 years or so.

You know, that honestly would be a move I could see as a great move for him. The pressure might not be as great as it would be if he took over the Gopher Men's program, and as low as UW is right now, he could try to rebuild it his way, too. And the B1G conf needs UW to return to its former winning ways, but it would almost be unprecedented for a coach to go from coaching one team to coaching that same team's biggest rival. And there is no gaurantee that what Frosty is doing with the Gopher women's program would work on the men's side of the game? Recruiting men that might leave after 1 or 2 seasons to go the NHL is alot different than dealing with young ladies who only once every 4 years might head to the olympics, often times to return the next season. But the Gopher Men's head coaching job is the only one I could see him even considering, but even that is probably unlikely. He's got a dynasty going on with most indications showing that it might continue for at least one more season, if not more? Who would leave that?

A better possibility would be UW's coach Johnson. He could continue coaching at the school he loves and he wouldn't have to move, except to another office I suppose, and he's got a couple Natl Titles under his belt and its not like his teams get blown out by Minnesota, they often beat Minnesota, for Conf Titles even. And had Kessel not come back, who knows? They may have been the ones to end Minny's dynasty this year AND ended BC's streak in the title game?

Frost is not qualified to coach UW Men, winning a Women's Championship isn't going to be qualifier. He will staying right here at the U, thank god!

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016 (Part 2) -- Amanda Kessel Enhanced

A quick thank you to the seniors for their contributions to what has been an amazing run for the Minnesota program.

You might be right that those in the position to pick the new UW mens hockey coach probably don't think winning 4 women's championships in the last 5 years doesn't qualify as a worthy accomplishment. But I am reminded by your comment of the movie I watched recently about UTEP's historic Men's cbb Natl Title winning season. The players questioned their new coaches qualifications when they heard that all he had done in his coaching career was win a GIRLS high school state bb title. Seems to me that coach did ok coaching MEN's bb. He's in the Hall of Fame, isn't he?

The game on Friday was an instant classic - one of the best games I have seen! It was some AMAZING hockey that could have gone either way. Let's celebrate that shall we? The game winning goal made SPORTS CENTER - how many times have we seen a WOMEN's HOCKEY goal - HIGHLIGHTED on SPORTS CENTER???? We should ALL be celebrating that accomplishment! You all moan about how the women's game does not get attention or media exposure???? WELL - it just did! So let's not BICKER AND ARGUE ABOUT WHO KILLED WHO...oh wait.....I already used that one!

AND one MORE THING - Congrats to BC - their fans showed up and put butts in seats!!! THAT was incredible! It is one thing to sell out Ridder in the STATE OF HOCKEY - your fans drove and showed up in the face of a (potential) Nor'EASTER!!!!

Agree. He will not be considered for the Wisconsin or Minnesota men's coaching positions. That is preposterous statement material.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016 (Part 2) -- Amanda Kessel Enhanced

Lee Stecklein will come back to Gopher Women's Hockey next year with the chance to become the only player in NCAA Div 1 hockey history, men's or women's, to win four national championships. She was on the undefeated team that won in 2013, missed the 2014 season while playing for the Olympic team, and came back to win in 2015 and 2016.

The only other team to win enough titles in a short enough time frame were the Michigan teams that won the men's title five times in six years from 1951 to 1956. However, looking at their rosters, no individual player was on more than three of those teams; I'm pretty sure that freshmen weren't eligible in those days anyway.

So, good luck, Lee, on trying to make history.

I'm not at all sure Timothy A was serious. For my part, I highly doubt Frost is going anywhere. But just for fun...

While uncommon, there certainly are some dramatic examples of coaches switching to an arch-rival.

Consider:
1. Bo Schembechler/Big 10 Football: Ohio State to Michigan. The Ten Year War resulted.

2. Joel Quenneville/NHL: St. Louis Blues to Chicago Blackhawks. For the 3rd time in 6 years, it's One Goal Achieved...
(OK, Quenneville had a 3 year stop with the Avs, but still.)

Also, if you're willing to consider player-to-coaching examples:
1. Where do you suppose Badger Bob Johnson played his college hockey before coaching Wisconsin?

2. Where do you suppose Dean Blais played his college hockey before coaching North Dakota?

Just sayin'.

Back to the big event of the day: Sincere congratulations to the Gopher Coaches, Players and Fans. Four Titles in Five Years; a truly amazing accomplishment. And a special tip of the hat to Amanda Kessel, who came all the way back from her concussion, and ultimately scored the national title winning goal. Great stuff.

Many thanks, Tony. Good to see you as always. Kind of wish we could have chatted more in person.

Thanks, also, to the gang at UNH -- DC78-82, Hux, zoofer, lancer, whoop87, and anyone else I may have missed. Good to see you all.

Yes, the turnout was great. Box score says 3211. Great atmosphere. Imagine what it would have been like if BC could have levelled it.
