Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016 (Part 2) -- Amanda Kessel Enhanced

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016 (Part 2) -- Amanda Kessel Enhanced

so nobody is going to mention Hanna Brandt tied the WCHA record for points?

Jocelyne Lamoureux had 125 goals and 160 assists = 285 points
Hannah Brandt 115 goals 170 assists = 285 points
or are these not correct?

she had a whole lot fewer penalty minutes :)

They are correct. And that duo finishes tied with Julie Chu for second in NCAA career points.

Congratulations Hannah Brandt! She certainly hasn't been mentioned enough. One of the four best forwards I have seen for the Gophers in the 14 years of watching them play. And with injuries and all she kept on competing on the ice and did not spend the equivalent of almost 6 games sitting in the sin bin in her career as that other player with 285 points. Hannah was a class act for all four years at Minnesota.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016 (Part 2) -- Amanda Kessel Enhanced

#8 finished with 108-140=248
extrapolate out for a full season, it would have been 285 as well

which means said player is probably better. imagine if she had 6 more games in which to score.
tie goes to Lam.

Most coaches would like to see goalies have a strong command of their rebound control. With said the three most important criteria for goaltenders are: Wins, GAA, and SV % - Leveille lead the tournament in all three categories.

Not a theory - Puck dents and inconsistencies - After a puck has been used there are now problems with the puck. Chips, dents, cuts, etc.

This is a well known fact! I have over 800 pucks for shooting in the shed for my children growing up, and all are imperfect after use. here are some links for NHL pucks (probably the most scrutinized).

Ovechin's 50 goal:

Puck's for practice:

And this is probably the one they used for the UM / BC game - http://www.collectorsweekly.com/stories/158296-1800s-hockey-puck?in=869

Any joking aside, ask a player from any Div 1 team (Male or Female) and they will tell you that once a puck has been shot, it becomes imperfect. And it likely started out with some issues but not as bad as when it first gets used.

Ask yourself why does a puck fluter after being shot? Several reasons, imperfect puck hitting the stick where it's blemished, bad tape or tape job, bad ice, bad shot. It can be any of these.

If you think that these pucks are unblemished, please go look at the warmup pucks after warmy's or look at the games pucks after the game. Any that are used are used!!

MN is the definition of a dynasty. how can ANYONE argue that. heck, they could possibly have the next 5 too...with all of the studs coming in.
great team

I'm imagining all the power play goals MN & ND must have given up in J Lam's 156 trips to the box. Those two were a dynamic duo in their freshman year with the Gophs. They both (137 for M Lam) seemed to get penalties at the worst possible time in the game though. Dumb penalties.

Such as ending your career sitting in the box while your opponent scores in triple overtime.

First off, the Ovie puck was dented from a 100 MPH slapshot hitting the back bar - not from the impact of the stick with the puck. Secondly, warm up pucks are used over and over and not in games. Lastly, how many new pucks do think are used during a typical game?? I personally know a former professional goalie and current OHL coach, and he assures me that what you are trying to suggest does not affect the rebound. A substantial chunk of rubber would have to missing to generate an unexpected rebound.

That's right. I forgot that she was in the box. My memory always focuses on the other ND player that should have been given a penalty at the end of that game. I'm surprised though that LaShomb managed to cut her penalties down to just 8 in this her senior year.

McMillen too, cut her penalties down to her fewest number this year of 18. Maybe it's my maroon and gold colored glasses, but it seems to me many of her penalties were in retaliation for an opposing player hitting one of her teammates usually Leveille.

Brandt had a whopping 2 this year and 18 for her career. Amazing.

UND #4 did not see as much ice time her SR. year. That probably accounts for a lot of it.

#13 took a lot of lazy penalities early in her time with UM. Instead of turning and skating with a forward she would reach out and hold or hook, drove me crazy because she was so much better than that. I think she did see herself as the team cop later on.

I wonder who will assume that role next season, if one's even needed.

Cameranesi does not have the size but she does not like to take any s**t. And she is strong. And Wolfe to a slightly lesser degree.

Pannek seems like the type to stand up for teammates. And Katie Robinson, the new D from Dodge County is big!

In other words, "I don't know!"

It could be whomever happens to be on the ice. Brook Garzone took 3 penalties in the last two years. At least two of them were in defense of a team mate. BTW, anybody know if she was really the offender who knocked UND’s #4 down in front of the Gopher net in the WCHA semi, or was she simply the one who was assigned the blame? I didn’t see who it was and was kinda surprised to see #18 skating off.

Wolfe & Cline seem capable when the situation requires it.

#21 is as likely to be dishing it out. :o
IMO, most WCHA players aren’t gonna be messin’ around with Pannek, I think enough of them have collided with her to know better.

I keep thinking there is only one incoming D, apparently thinking Marshall & Robinson are the same person, both shoot right, but other than that
It looks like Dodge County plays a pretty tough schedule, so that's a good sign.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016 (Part 2) -- Amanda Kessel Enhanced

Fairly tall but quite thin.

When we were at the welcome home gathering at Ridder the other night my wife mentioned how slight several of the Gopher players looked in their regular clothes. She thinks it's remarkable that Amanda could be such a great goalie being so slight. I decided not to say, well compared to us, of coarse they are.

This leads me to thank Milica McMillian for not dropping the trophy after we high-fived outside Ridder that night. The photo just pre high five of my arm and hand is #2 in the photo gallery at the bottom of Joe Cristensen's "Dynasty" article in the Trib. D2D provided a link to the article and photos. Our friend "the walker" seen to the right in the photo was smart enough to just clap and not expect someone to high five while carrying a large trophy.
