It was great to see the Gophers tip a few shots early on and change the direction of the puck in front of the net. Still a few too many high, wayward slap shots though.

Nice cheer from the few faithful attendees when Hannah was introduced in the starting lineup. Did she ever wreak havoc with the Huskies defense especially in the first two periods. That first line was something else tonight. Wow!

Welcome back Taylor, too.

Gophers are wearing "14" on their helmets.

Laing's number with Princeton was 14.

There is a photo of her battling Rachel Bona along the boards and another of her and Hannah Brandt and Meghan Lorence (mislabled as Kelly Terry) in front of the Princeton goal in the USCHO recap of the 11/30/13 game with the Gophers at Ridder.

I'm actually a bit relieved as I would have taken it that there was something seriously wrong with Menefee if it was for her. I'm new to these parts, how would I go about finding the recap you mention? Thanks

The thought crossed my mind last night, watching a mediocre Gopher men's team steamroll the Badgers, that Mike Eaves is likely going to be relieved of his duties soon. The Badgers could look in-house at Johnson as the next men's coach and if that were the case, would they take a run at Joel Johnson to fill the vacancy in the women's program?

I think if UW had an AD who gave a s*** about hockey they wouldn't even consider Mark Johnson because he has been out of the men's game so long. But I could see Barry Alvarez doing it because he would love the short cut.

Coach JJ I don't think would be interested in very many programs. UW would clearly be a worthy one, but it would be terrible for Frost and Johnson to coach against each other border battle style :eek:

(If he was to leave he should go out east)

If Mark Johnson got the men's job, they'd give the women's job to Dan Koch, who is the Badgers' equivalent of Joel Johnson.

I mentioned the number 14 on the Gopher helmets to my wife last night and her response was "I hope there is nothing seriously wrong with Maryanne." I said I wonder if Denna Laing's jersey number was 14 at Princeton and looked it up. Turns out there are several teams wearing 14 on there helmets to show their support for her and also making 14s on the ice with their bodies or helmets.

After watching the Gopher game Friday in St Cloud and two periods of the St Cloud men's game with W. Michigan we left the arena and went to the Blue Line Bar which was the only place we could find the Big Ten channel to watch the 3rd period of the Gophers thrashing of Wisconsin. After our $5 cheeseburgers and fries I questioned if the Badgers would fire Eaves at the end of the season and offer the job to Mark Johnson as I thought they might. My wife said she did not think that Johnson would accept the job if offered as long as he has a daughter playing for Wisconsin. I wonder.

Word in the Wisconsin men's thread is that Barry Alvarez was at the game Saturday night. That can't be good for Eaves. The 4th line today (with Johnson's daughter playing on it) looked pretty good.

I know the money & the prestige is higher on the mens side but I think it would be a huge mistake for several reasons. The mens side has become a minor league feeder for the NHL and too many of the players that made teams like WI and MN great really are not invested in collegiate success, this makes them more difficult to coach. Success on the womens side will carry no weight on the mens and may actually be seen as a negative by the more macho boys. But if anyone could make the switch successfully it would be someone with a resume that includes an olympic gold (although even that might not compare to an NHL career. I'd look at someone like Curt Giles, NHL career successful HS boys coach.

I think Johnson had a more-successful NHL career than Giles, plus he's coached men's college hockey.

I knew he coached mens before, I admit I pay no attention to the NHL, I am a hockey fan. I just don't see why anyone enjoying his success would want those headaches so I was looking for other possibilities. The step up for Giles might be interesting for him.

They were basically in the league for the same period, roughly '80-'93 but Giles had close to 900 NHL games while Johnson had less than 700. Johnson was a forward, so he scored more points than the defensive defensman Giles. Giles finished in the NHL while Johnson finished in Europe. I think Giles had the more solid NHL reputation than Johnson, although the Canadian bias might explain that too. Giles certainly had a better +/-.

I don't have any inside information but I would hazard to guess that Giles will finish his coaching career at Edina. He's been there now close to 16 years, and he's 57. If he would have been a logical candidate anywhere it would have been UMD, his alma mater, but as we know they just hired a new coach.

I don't see MJ as the best replacement for Eaves when the ax does fall. MJ was the lead assistant under Sauer at the end and those teams were weak. Rumor has it that MJ wasn't hitting the recruiting trail hot and heavy enough when he was a younger fella, and now that the ncaa men's side is even more competitive than ever, I don't see him busting his balls on the recruiting trail. As the UW coach, all he has to do is sift through the recruiting applications at the desk in the office. The program practically recruits itself. Mark Osieki, Gwoz, Don Granato or Tony Granato would be the top 4. I often wonder who will replace MJ when he hangs them up. I'd love to see Frosty leave the darkside. Barry will probably go out of house, though I think Friesen or Koch would do a great job.

How about clarksoncluck? Really has a grasp of what MJ is thinking and the associated flawed logic. As well as a clearly superior vision for improvement going forward per MJ's failed recruitment strategy.

Just a thought.
