welcome to my world. one shot can be fatal. try 19-1 after 1 period...0-0. 42-3 after 2 periods...2-0
it's the toughest to watch...they back in...you have 6 goalies and pray there isn't a tip or off a body down the other end.
I don't recall ever being to a game quite like this one. At the end of two Minnesota held a 33-4 advantage in shots on goal but was trailing 0-1. Probably an equal number of attempted shots that were either blocked or missed the net. It was a fun game to watch if you like seeing a 60 minute power play.

Yes, while I found the game very enjoyable, if frustrating, to watch, if Sidney Peters was my daughter it would have been terrible!
Mankato worked their tails off. I think they were really happy to have played a one goal game on Saturday, but I suspect they were actually disappointed they didn't win on Sunday. Anyway, good for them!

With gas prices inching down to close to $1.50/gallon it's not that much more expensive to drive up there and see them in person, which is what we're talking about doing.

Just to expand on your thoughts as they are similar to mine...It reinforces how difficult the WCHA grind can be. Even the bottom teams can give the top teams headaches and I'm conflicted by how they are choosing to do it.
On the one hand, with not having the talent to match up with the top teams, They can make the choice to pack it in and play, as Ne7minder says, "as if on a PK all game". It can work if you can get full buy-in from the players to play that way and get the "talented" team frustrated enough to make a mistake or two. It also requires your goaltender to be just about perfect which leaves very little room for error.
On the other hand, watching what happened this weekend, and Sunday in particular, was frankly quite boring to watch (at least from this fan's persective). And what about trying to recruit and grow your program playing this style? It's a catch-22 as you are probably going to miss out on players with above average offensive skills or potentially lose a player like Nicole Schammel who decides to take her talents elsewhere where she can put those talents to use.

they may think its the way to help recruiting...only losing by 1 goal. for the short term it's a good strategy...if the teams turn into the NJ Devils of the late 90's it's going to be tough to recruit.

I've seen Minnesota State play other teams, and they don't take the same approach that they did yesterday. I think the players would rather focus on defense against the Gophers than spend the day fishing pucks out of their own net like they did on the Friday game in Mankato.

Come to (fill in the blank bottom WHCA team) and instead of fishing pucks out of the back of our net when we play Minnesota or Wisconsin, we will play a trap-like shutdown defense against them to hopefully keep it close enough for a (very) occasional win. We will then open the offense up against other (fill in the blank bottom WCHA teams) who we feel we can compete with offensively.

In his early years at Wisconsin, Mark Johnson played a more conservative style than he does today. Every coach dials it back when at a talent disadvantage. It didn't seem to hurt his recruiting efforts. I think it is too early to assume that the way Harrington played yesterday with a bunch of young players that he inherited is the way he will play in the future. It wasn't that different from what I've seen from other coaches like Sertich, Scanlan, or Idalski against Minnesota.

I believe the game that the Gophers beat Bemidji 10-0 a couple years ago a similar conclusion came to the Beavers,
a favorite movie quote of mine is from Dirty Harry "A man has to know his limitations" In the last 5 games against the Gophers they have been blown out once, the other 4 they have given the Gophers a rough time, It's hard to argue against the way they played given the teams relative places in the standings over that time, the blowout their forwards played like you guys think they should, the result showed otherwise. It seems to me Mankato knew what they were capable of, and played their best hand to win, they were in both games to the final horn.
sure, the blowout was fun to watch the Gophers score, at least for the first couple periods, but this weekends games had more drama, I'll take a nail biter any day over a game the conclusion comes halfway thru the first period

If they can't recruit a couple of snipers that is the best they can hope for. You hope to produce a couple so you don't have to forever play PK. Then you hope to make the NC$$ and get a break. If you where coach of MSU, OSU, SCSU what would you do? I think Johnson did it at WI (though not from as far back). Their biggest problems are not having a ton of depth and having ****ty facilities. I sat behind Doyle's dad at a HS game last year & he told me they sell OSU's 3rd rate facilities as a great way to prove you are a better player that doesn't need that fancy stuff. Pasta bless them if they can pull that off. I assume when there is more talent out there they may make that work but till then they will always be fighting up hill. As a coach what are you going to do? You hope to steal a game or maybe 2 against the elite so you can maybe cherry pick someone with a big upside from the next class.

There is no answer that wouldn't be criticized so it might as well be ridiculous. Get the Hanson (Schmitt) sisters and goon it up. Oh wait...

I didn't think anyone was disagreeing with you just looking at it from the other side. Yes, the games are boring but there may not be a lot of options currently. I suppose you could try to recruit younger which is risky and not going to endear you to the rest of the coaches or hope to pick kids with more upside (that other coaches missed - good luck) and redshirt them to give them time to develop. There just are not enough Brandts, Pankowskis or Carptenters to go around and the ugly stuff that is such a great equalizer in the mens game is not yet acceptable. What is needed is about 4 times as many girls playing the game at age 10 as are doing so now so there is more of those to go around.

This is the long term answer. When the top programs like Minnesota do not have room for all the best recruits because there is more of them as a result of increased participation, then opportunities open up for these other programs.
