Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016: Confection Free

I don't have any inside information but I would hazard to guess that Giles will finish his coaching career at Edina. He's been there now close to 16 years, and he's 57. If he would have been a logical candidate anywhere it would have been UMD, his alma mater, but as we know they just hired a new coach.

I was thinking mens because Johnson was mentioned as a replacement for Eaves. Giles came to mind because the NHL is all recruits think of today, he is successful, knows a lot of the talent and might see it as a promotion. Johnson otoh is very successful where he is without have the NHL taking his best players and may not be up to speed on boys.

If Kessel comes back in any of her old form, this truly will be a dream team. Desbiens remains the biggest roadblock.

don't underestimate the job the Badger blueline is doing, and the whole team for that matter

There is a huge difference between skating in practice and the grind of playing. I wouldn't bet on #8 ever lacing up for a real game again. I would love to see her in a USA sweater again but realistically it isn't very likely.

Taking stock………..
I say the home stretch of the regular season starts tomorrow. The next four weeks the Gophers play all three of the other rated teams in the WCHA along with UMD. For Bemidji, UND, and UW, the only rated team they have left to play is Minnesota.

So far this year the Gophers have revealed a chink in their armor. They are only 3-3 against Bemidji, UND, and UW. It would be great to improve upon this starting tomorrow. Defensively, some sort of lapse or bad break seems to occur with alarming regularity. Goals against is a strong 1.3 goals per game but they give up a goal on 7.7% of their opponents shots (compare to 3.4% for UW, 5.3% for Quinni, or 5.5% for BC). Also, the PK is giving up a goal 21.4% of the time (compare to UW 3.4%, Quinni 7.6%, or BC 7.9%). Fortunately, the Gophers allow fewer power play opportunities than anyone in the nation.

But the Gophers remain an offensive juggernaut. They are averaging 5.4 goals per game. This is even higher than BC at 5.2 (UW 4, Quinni 3.3). Their power play is a vicious weapon converting at 48.6% (BC 28.3%, Quinni 25.7%, UW 23.6%). Heading into the postseason these gaudy numbers may well be lower after the difficult schedule coming up, but hopefully our QualityWinBonus will be a lot higher!

In another thread, someone gave the Gophers almost no chance of winning. I think this is kooky talk. Someone should go have a beer with Katie King Crowley and Mark Johnson and ask them if truthfully deep down they dismiss Minnesota as having almost no chance.

Wisconsin looks like a team of destiny with their crazy good defense and the breaks going their way in both the Gopher series in December and the UND series last weekend. Yes, they made their breaks by how they played. But it will be difficult to beat a ‘lucky’ Wisconsin. The men’s referees were recently told to call more interference penalties on extended contact after the ‘dump’ of ‘dump and chase’. It would be helpful for opponents if the refs were told that before Wisconsin women’s games as well!

It’s hard to have much opinion on BC being they are on the other side of the world. I tried to watch their second game with Northeastern but they made Northeastern look like they weren’t even trying. I had to quit watching. BC can clearly beat anyone. And I’m certainly not betting on Northeastern.

I watched Quinnipiac beat BU 6-1 recently and I came away taking them very seriously indeed so I’ve got them in the mix. Hence the stats comparing MN, UW, BC and Quinni.

No offense to the worthies who are unmentioned!

Go Gophers!

I could not agree more. I was sick of seeing the sue interfere with UW players trying to chase the puck down last weekend on the forecheck. :)
Interference should be a 5 minute penalty every time. Interference kills the speed and excitement of the game. There's not much more exciting that a big back door save on a 2-1, a sweet backdoor goal on a 2-1 or even a great stick check to break up a 2-1. Interference sucks the life out of a game.

They should leave it at 2 but enforce the rule more consistently. Way too many obvious instances of interference are not called.

I don't. An excellent Badger team made it so the series came down to Desbiens. But one player made the difference in a Badger sweep vs. a split...and with the Gophers forwards, could well have been the difference in a Gopher sweep when the team played in Madison.

With the firepower the Gophers have...if UW stops the Gophers the way they did in Madison over the coming months, it will be truly an amazing accomplishment and this Gopher fan is ready to back Desbiens for the Kaz.

Except for one anomalous year (when it had to go to a Gopher) It seems of late that the Kaz goes to the best player on a final 4 team that doesn't win the championship. That means Brandt this year. please save your posts pointing out where I am wrong the post was a joke people.

How quickly you forgot Rattray.

How quickly you forgot Rattray.

Who? :)

I knew I would forget someone but it was mostly tongue in cheek anyway. Like arguing over which team is 1 or 2 there is no real way to compare unless they play each other. It's a nice way to argue about something that will never really be proven.

Edit it just occurred to me that I should have pointed out that Rattray proved eastern bias! I need to up my game around here!

Me too. Just a minute ago I sent an email to someone at the athletic department asking about that. I figure it's too late but if I hear/find out anything I'll post.

Please do the same :)

Just got a response from Stretch Internet:

Hi there!

Due to a quirk in the timing of our scheduling system, games scheduled after a certain time get listed as happening the next day. As long as you're clicking on the watch link for tonight's game, that's the game you'll be purchasing.

Thanks!
