Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016: Confection Free

Come on guys this was a pretty witty post. Lighten up ya old coots!
I remember what one TTT was posting a little over a year ago when about a bazillion players on some U.S. national team roster had BC connections. You weren't all that worried about the future of the game and better balance. It's not that big a deal that UM has a bunch of players at U-18 Worlds, because it is a roster very heavy on Minnesota-born players, and those often tend to pick the Gophers. Had someone else picked that roster, maybe some other team is better represented. As for Ted, he's already made it clear that if UM plays BC next year, it won't count because 5 and 22 will be gone, and so the Goph's will have missed their one chance to play THE GREATEST TEAM EVER!!! (even though I still think Wisconsin is better)

If Clarkson fans claim that the Gophers are ducking the Golden Knights, I'll listen. I might even consider it if it came from wwhyte or some other BC fan that can form a coherent thought.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016: Confection Free

Some are depressed about the 12 players coming to the Gophers? I'm still depressed about Allie Thunstrom going to BC and not the Gophers. The U of M should always get Minnesota's MS Hockey winners. There used to be a restaurant in North St Paul (the Tap & Grill) that had several photos and one or two jerseys of Ms Thunstrom on it's walls. I think we went there once right after she had just scored two goals for BC in a game at Ridder arena that resulted in a 2-2 tie. If T & G's fried chicken hadn't been so good, we might have gone to the Leaning Tower of Pizza instead after the game.

I've always liked it when the Gophers played the teams from out east. They used to play Harvard, Brown, UNH, St Lawrence, Dartmouth regularly and I remember them also playing Clarkson and BC as well. They did play Yale this year, but I wonder what the reason is for playing fewer series now with the eastern teams. I don't think it's because they're afraid of them. Perhaps it's the added series for the WCHA tournament? The east provided better competition 10 years ago than the WCHA teams did other than UMD? Cost? I don't know.

Yes, schedule is bad this year. Only two out of conference series for Minnesota. 6 WCHA teams having a series against Lindenwood.

One would suspect cost came into play. Hopefully it was just bad luck with scheduling and I'm hoping we go back to 3 OOC series next year.

Oooh oooh I was at that game! That was a hell of a weekend. Somehow me and Joe got invited up into the Gopher club thing up in the corner for that game.

I've been called many different things but incoherent has never been one of them.
if you read even a little bit into the post I think I did say that they'd rather lose to MN or WI than win 10-0

winning streaks mean nothing. I learned that when the Patriots lost to the Giants. (their only loss) anyone on that team would have taken a 9-7 season if they could have won the Super Bowl.

I, as well as everyone here, can honestly say...BC is NOT the greatest team ever. the MN team that went undefeated was. I have no problem stating, saying, typing, or dreaming up that statement. it's a fact.
it's also a fact that the 2 teams don't play each other and I know BC has reached out.
The teams used to play but now they don't. MN may beat the crap out of them, who knows? it's a shame
that we'll never know.

imagine if the Blackhawks had to play the Wild every game? Even the Blackhawk fans would lose interest.

Wasn't this the game where some BC players' parents from Minnesota rented out the Club Room? As I recall they had some good food catered in. And if memory serves, besides Thunstrom, Tracy Johnson was on that team, plus maybe another player or two from Minnesota as well? Or maybe my mind is playing tricks with me again, and it's all just a dream? ;)

Ditto.

Seem to recall a series with Mercyhurst back in the day as well.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016: Confection Free

Honestly seeing TWELVE for the Gophers is pretty depressing. I wouldn't complain if it was BC obviously but geez, this can't be good for the growth of the college game.

I know that's the common wisdom, but I'm not so sure. Let me explain...

Whenever there's success by a team...let's call them the MN Gophers...there's young girls growing up who see that and pick up skates. Now you might say that Clarkson winning an NC would allow for many girls there to pick up the game. I would argue that the overall visibility and impact of the Gophers/Bulldogs on development is unrivaled. And from there, the increase of girls reaching college age will need to go to more and more schools. Which is extremely good for the game.

For example, I believe much of the unrivalled development in MN can be attributed to the success of the Gopher/Bulldog programs. The US seems to be doing as well vis a vis Canada as ever before. Can you argue with the results? Another example. Does it appear that all the UW success has amounted to much future development of the sport in Wisconsin? I'd say not so much. So in the end, MN state programs that do well appear to generate more development for the US game than success elsewhere in the country.

Call it the OnMAA theory...and it's ridiculous in my opinion. Being successful, building a program that has consistently excelled with a good product is not detrimental to the sport. Quite the opposite in my opinion.

One other thought. I don't think Minnesota is likely to dominate in the manner of UConn women's hoops while Mark Johnson is coaching UW. His teams will almost always contest for supremacy.

That sounds right to me -- now that I think about it, there were a ton of BC people up there.

I'd add that a lot of the growth comes because of the State High School league program and also because of John Marriucci's commitment to recruit only Minnesota boys at a time when they were not the best available and had to play against everyone elses Canadian 22 year olds. JM elevated expectations and MSHSL provided a chance for kids to develop. That has created a following for hockey that no other state comes close to. Wisconsin could do it, Michigan, Massachusetts even New York produces great players but the community commitment to the game does not exist. That the girls are driven along with the boys is in no small part because they have seen the game since and sense how much success in the game is recognized. We really should be a province of Canada :) but if we were team USA would be lucky to be playing for 3rd.

And, yes, Johnson has worked wonders at UW. They play the game the right way and very well for a long time so it has to be his program. He deserves the credit. Now if he could just convince girls in the state to pick up the game.

what good would playing BC do? it would help BC more than it would help the Gophers
they already play WI a minimum of 4 times to give them a top level challenge, and in the past there was UMD, these days UND & Bemidji
MN did their part to meet up with BC last year, it was BC that couldn't hold up its end

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016: Confection Free

ne7minder, shhhh! ;)
:D

It would be great for womens hockey if Wisconsin could hold up their end of a contest. I know it could get me in trouble here but I like the Badger womens team. On those occasions when the Gophers are not crowned national champions I don't mind too much that the skunks win it. They play like the Gophers with skill, speed and an energy that marks a great program. Its a shame they can't find 2 Wisconsin natives to put on the team.

Four on this year's roster - Baylee Wellhausen, Kim Drake, Rachel Jones, and Mikayla Johnson.

Also, two Wisconsin native winners of the Kazmaier - Jesse Vetter and Brianna Decker.

(Oh, wait... there was a third WI native winning the Kaz, wasn't there...)

maybe it's because they are so busy scouring everywhere except WI that they can't find them. It seems at least half the WI girls go elsewhere
